View Full Version : Winslow's Doodles

A doodle is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied.

Heh . . this is me in all my ADD personality.

I decided to start a new thread with stuff I sketch and create. I drew a lot as a kid, but set the pencil down in college (circa 1980-81).

In 2002 I decided to resurrect my old hobby, and my hand is really rusty but slowly improving.

My old thread had my initial stuff from 2002 and 2003 with links to a now defunct geocities account - so it's a mess. So I'm starting a new one with newer stuff. :)

Feel free to critique and suggest. Part of the reason I'm posting is to learn.

This is the entry I made for last year's Bow and Arrow's competition:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb95/WinslowsDoodles/Hunter_reduced.jpg

The Buffalo is too small. I made a perspective error when I didn't adjust for the Buffalo's size because it's in front of the horse . . Alas. Live and learn. :D

When I was a kid, I played G.I. Joes quite a bit. One of my favorite "role plays" was when me and my buddy pretended to be on the crew of a B-25 bomber on secret missions.

I decided I'd draw the crew in front of the B-25 we named "The Bumble Bee." Of course, the first step was drawing the 1940's style inup nose art . . because, well, let's face it, cheesecake is fun to draw:

I'll include updates as this project progresses.

On the Comm Board in the RITA's thread, someone mentioned convertible mittens last winter. This silly image popped in my head so I drew it.

This was the first time I scanned in a fabric texture and used it for the mittens. I may do t again in the future.

I found an old sketch I made in high school. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd, and most of the sketches and doodles in this thread will reflect that. This is a Rider of Rohan:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb95/WinslowsDoodles/Rider_of_Rohan.jpg

This pic demonstrates my undisciplined line art. I never took the time to learn to strike down a clean line, and I lack the patience and hand skill to master it in my old age. :)

So I've started drawing over my scans rather than rely on them (the Bumble Bee pinup above is an example of that).

This was a "play along at home" entry for last year's CBRunway contest.

The feet are messed up, and I knew that but in my hurry I didn't bother to correct:

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb95/WinslowsDoodles/Sue.jpg

One of the things I'm learning is not to "settle" for errors. It really compromises the quality of my work when I do.

Another nerd Tolkien entry form me.

This is a sketch of Elbereth, the Tolkien Valar (or god) of the Stars.

I overdrew the sketch to get the clean lines, and added a Hubble telescope pic of distant galaxies as a background. I don;t plan on selling it, so I don't think I violated any copyright ethics (but probably some artistic lines were crossed):

And here's an unfinished Wonder Woman piece I started for the CBRdraws Wonder Woman thread, but never finished (I got bored with it):

Where do you go for "inspiration" when you get bored?

I dabble a little in landscape photography as well. This isn't a "doodle", but it's one of my favorite photographs I've ever taken. Then again, it's tough to make a mistake in Glacier National Park:

Thanks for sharing these images Winslow. There is quite a bit of variety in there. You have done well bringing yourself up to speed using the computer as a creative tool in your drawings. I am interested in seeing what you do with the B-25 crew idea.

Don't sell yourself short on the photography. That image from Glacier National Park is excellent. I've been doing quite a bit of photography myself recently and it is definitely a creative process.

Thanks gary, that means a lot coming for a professional artist.

Here's another shot from Logan's Pass in Glacier. We had to hike up several hundred feet to egt to this point, and across a snowy glacier . . it was pretty cool:

Here's an old piece from 2004 or so. It's another Tolkien entry form me (his work provides a lot of creative energy for me). It's the elf princess Luthien escaping on the Valar (god) dog Huan. I love both of these characters.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb95/WinslowsDoodles/Luthien_escapes_on_Huan.jpg

I don't really care for it now, so I'm re-drawing it, and creating an animated gif of Huan running.

Speaking of animated gifs . . .

This is a humor gif I made because I lost a bet with someone on a message board where I used to post .

The character is a “support character from Crossgen’s comic Meridian. On the Crossgen forum there was fun and spirited debate about her character. The character’s name is Feabie, and she was a romantic rival to the protagonist Sephie. Both were interested in a male character named, Jad. The debate was about whether her actions were honorable in her pursuit of Jad’s affections.

I was on the side that felt sorry for her (The Cult of Feabie (http://www.geocities.com/dtjunkie/feabie_home.htm)). :D

I lost a bet with someone that hated her charcter, “The I hate Feabie Club” . . and as a result he asked me to draw some “I hate Feabie Club” fan art.

To go a little further (there are layers of history to this piece) . .the inker to Merdian, Tom Simmons, regularly frequented the boards, and drew a sketch at a Con that said sound does Feabie make when you throw Rocks at her . . .”FOP!” Needeless ot say, Tom hated Feabie too. :D

Fun stuff. I miss the Crossgen Boards, where regular interaction with the creators was very common.

You're too hard on yourself, Unca Winnie. I can really see a progression in your skill.

BY POPULAR DEMAND!

OK, OK, only morna asked for it

hey you! where's that Usagi stuff you promised!

The below is a mini-comic I sketched in 2003 or 2004. The kids are small, I have a beard (yes, the bearded guy is a cartoon representation of me), and it looks rushed with lots of errors. But I DO like the storytelling aspects . .

I colored these, but couldn't find the digital work, so I re-scanned the originals. I may try touching these up and finishing it. I have the so-called storyboard drafted out.

Thanks, it was fun to make, although I concede looks rushed now that I look at it fresh. I may keep the layout of the panels and re-draw it.

The title of the piece is Rescue of the Kidnapped Kids and the Castle is the Castle of of Lord Hikiji! *spooky music*

And yes, I was reading Usagi Yojimbo to my kids before bed . . .something that has sadly fallen out of habit in our household.

ahhh . . OK.

Yeah, I meant here. :)

I was confused by the posters, and then realized I was in the hellboy thread. Your painted glass is simply amazing . . I've seen a lot of it before (somewhere, maybe RITAs?)

The beginnings of my entry for the CBR drawoff Summer.

I wanted to work on my foreshortening skills. Like most amateurs, foreshortening and perspective are the hurdles to cross to improve my art . . so I decided to use the contest to stretch my skills.

It is a self portrait. :D It will eventually be me in a hammock at the beach. One fun thing about digital art . .the skin tone and hair color is from a photograph of me using the ink dropper function.
