View Full Version : Rarely talked-about anime.

This thread is for those anime you specially ordered from a catalogue or just found one day at GameSpot one day, abandoned.

Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma - The story is often cliched and full of holes, but it has a charm similar to the first Vampire Hunter D. Moreover, it's one of the goriest anime I've ever seen. Watch it if you're in a mood for mindless violence and big monsters.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals - Forget Unlimited. This four-part miniseries is a lot more entertaining. The animation style is simple yet unique, the soundtrack is what you expect from Final Fantasy, and the characters are more wacky than usual. A generally enjoyable watch with hints of retardation here and there.

I think Saber Marionette J needs more attention. So does Golden Boy and Girls Bravo.

Love Golden Boy. Hilarious stuff.

My pick for show/movie that needs more mention is Bounty Dog. I'm quite fond of the story and production values.

I have a copy of Golden Boy. It took me about 15min to figure out how to set the subtitles on english...

Bubble Gum Crisis & Lost Universe
BBC seems older but is still good. Lost Universe is funny, kinda don't understand the plot but it's handy if you need a laugh.

I agree about Bubblegum Crisis.
Miyuki chan in Wonderland was good and I think the DVD might be out of print now.

I still think Jojo needs much more attention. Its a great funny action manga

I think one of JoJo's problems with getting popular is that it's too much like American superhero comics, so manga fans might turn their nose up at it. Meanwhile, I love the damn thing. I still swear JoJo is one of those "obscure anime" that the Wachoskis said they based bits of the Matrix off of. I think they're definately fans. Just think about some of the scenes, like when the agent goes really fast and dodges bullets. Then there's the scene in the second one with Trinity's heart which is just like a scene from a later ep of the anime. I saw Matrix 2 with a friend and afterwards he said it was a total JoJo ripoff/homage. I hadn't seen that episode at the time, but when I did, it was somewhat simiar.

Finally got around to seeing JoJo's Bizarre Adventures. Love it. Same guy that did Fist of the Northstar, correct? Very violent and quite cool in the later episodes.

Nope. "Fist of the Northstar" helped inspire "Jojo", especially early "Jojo", but was done by a different mangaka. The last 6 episodes were the original OVA, done years before the first half. I love 'em.

The dub for "FF:LotC" is wonderful. "Violence never solves anything. Trust me, I'm in the military!"

I prefer "Bubblegum Crisis" over "Bubblegum Crisis 2040", but that might be influenced by the order in which I watched them.

I am a big fan of "Giant Robo", and thus was disappointed when visiting my old anime club. A show they were watching, "Futakoi Alternative", had a 10-15 minute stretch of "Gatchaman", "Giant Robo", and like show references slammed all against each other, and I was the only one catching them.

For more obscure shows, I like "Iczer" and "Iczer 3", "Dog of Flanders" (VHS, the DVD is edited), "Here is Greenwood", "Five Star Stories", and "Key the Metal Idol". You might also add "Moldiver", "Black Heaven", "Dragon Half", and "Shinesman" if you think they are obscure enough.

I picked up "Neo Tokyo" because I ran into a fansubber (Shinsengumi. VHS group, motto was "Sin. Swift. Slay.") waxing nostalgic at it in a Best Buy. He recommended the commercial copy, so I picked it up.

Of course, if you add fansubs, then you get things like "Glass Mask", "D4 Princess", "Combustible Campus Guardress", and "Akazukin Cha Cha".

I still cannot believe the time I had to explain to a club member that ChaCha was a place-holder, and missing that bit of the showing was expected. It was Chacha, what was the chance of plot actually happening?

Weird.... Solty Rei, Girls Bravo, and Blood Reign are the only three mentioned I have not seen.

Cyber City Odoe 808, one of Kawajiri's finest works. Love the dark futuristice atmosphere in this one.

Another one would be Battle Angel. When will they rerelease this? Heck, does AD Vision even have the rights to it anymore? I want a copy! Love those character designs.

And I especially like Ninku the Movie. Funny and action packed, but too short!

I don't think Golden Boy is rarely talked-about. It's regarded as the best comedic anime series by more than a few.

I've seen Here is Greenwood, and it's decent.

From what I remember, years before the recent Final Fantasy VII CG sequel, "Legends Of The Crystals" dealt with the aftermath of "V". However at that point V wasn't available commercially in America, and most people ignored the series.

Greenwood was a fun little series back in the day. I tried reading hte Manga when it came out a few years ago and couldn't get into it. Best part of the series is watching the re-creation of the end of Castle of Cagliostro as a stage play.

What's intresting is the series that get talked about a lot for awhile, thenjust seemed to fade away. Ten years ago Ranma 1/2 was king of anime in this country. The gateway show that anyone intrested in anime had seen at least some of the movies and the first few episodes. Now? I hardly ever see much about it.

You know, I'll say it, I hated Nadesico. With a passion. Thematically the series just seemed to fall apart in the last third of the series. I love the first half though.

The series didn't fall apart until the last two episodes, IMHO. Right after the death of Yukina's brother.

I felt it started flip flopping on it's meta-text much earlier than that. But, then, I haven't seen the series since it came out, so I can't really argue my points anymore.

1) "Dog of Flanders", "Here is Greenwood", and "Neo Tokyo" are titles i've heard before. I actualy HAVE seen Dragon Half. It was at a filmfest last year the local anime club tries to host.

I wonder what the series would have been like had they finished it. It may be better they didn't though. Like they did with FLCL, less seemed to be better.

Boogiepop Phantom is one of my fave animes of all times.

3)Yet to find this one...anywhere... I saw a wallpaper for it awhile back. The site it was on is known for using screenshots so i know it has some decent animation (from what i could tell)

What about "Dead Leaves"? I have only seen bits of this one here and there but i never hear people talking about it.

If you mean it because of the change of tone, well, that's something pretty much all 26-episodes anime shows tend to do, to take a darker, more serious turn after Ep. 13 and tackle new themes. Even Excel Saga kinda did it to a point. Sometimes it doesn't work (Evangelion, Chrno Crusade) and sometimes it works (Nadesico, Mai HiME, Trigun).

And the second part still has episodes that are real winners, like the beauty contest or the peek into Ruri's past.

In the case of Ranma 1/2, that's too bad because it's one of the better comedic anime shows out there.

The absence of this pattern is what I love so much about Gantz. It's 26 episodes of relentless satire and madness.

"Rarely talked about" is rather general. I know that something like Galaxy Angel isn't really discussed on CBR but I know other forums where you can find long threads from people that love the GA franchise.

(I love Galaxy Angel.)

Boogiepop was like Lain--you shouldn't watch it unless you're series about anime or that kind of storytelling. It wasn't for everybody, being very stylistic and, at times, hard to watch, though not in a conventional sense. Still, it was rather good, though I can't confess to caring for it as much as I did Lain.

Yeah, it's the anime version of the manga. It was made by the same people who later did Code Geass.

Protip: Quit watching fansubs. It's a bad sign when they don't even get the title right. I can't stand it when people continue to call the damn thing Planet ES.

This is bad advice. Better advice would be: keep watching fansubs for unlicensed material, then when said material is licensed, support the official release.

I can't stand it when people continue to call the damn thing Planet ES.

Official releases don't always use correct names, either. It's all in the matter of how it's translated.

True. That is an apropriate clarifacation. Maybe I should have jus said to quit using fansubs as gospel.

Though personally, I've given up on fansubs as nothing new really has caught my interest. Plus I have a ton of bought DVD movies and shows that I haven't gotten to finishing yet. Same with manga and scanlations.

Yeah, that was the same one that I had read a year ago. Though it didn't go very far. Was it a anime to manga adaptation or was it vice versa.
