I believe it would, but you'd actually have to have some FIGHTING in the movie (something severly lacking in Superman Returns). If the movie is Action Comics #775, absolutely. That's a tale that goes to the very heart of what Superman is. It hit him right on the head and that still resonates with the American people.

Animated, eh??? I think that would have made a good episode (or two-parter) on the animated series. As for a full-length movie, I think I'd rather wait to see some other stories done after Doomsday/The Return is released. (Perhaps The Battle for/Fall of Metropolis stories?)

If a comic fan ask me why I like Superman I just tell them to read that issue.

Definitely not.

The Elite worked great as a metatextual comic story, aimed at people who were familiar with the evolution of the super hero genre at the time. The themes would fall utterly flat to a movie audience who would have no idea the Elite was a pastiche of another popular comic book team, or even that killing evildoers is supposed to be bad.

Wow, that was unusually insightful of me.

A cartoon version of it would work better, I think, since those are more or less aimed at us.

Not that they wouldn't like it if everyone bought the cartoons, but I think they realize they've mainly got a core audience, and can aim at a narrower demographic.

If only Superman was normally like that. I normally find myself supporting Lex in Superman comics on general principles (how long is he going to last before his brains get beaten by raw superpowers?) Against The Elite is one of the few times I've seen Superman look as if he believed he could be hurt.
