Amazing Spider-man #541
“Back in Black: Part 3 of 5”
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Artist: Ron Garney
Inker: Bill Reinhold
Colorist: Matt Milla

The issue starts out with Peter trying to drag answers out of one of the Kingpin’s henchmen. Peter has pretty much lost it and is not afraid to do anything. Next, Kingpin sets up his escape plan with the cop named Charlie. Kingpin begins to tear apart his desk and loads of cash fall out of the desk legs and body (cool scene). He gives the money to Charlie and tells him to just look the other way along with other guards at a point in the evening, and then he tells him to bring him his cloths. In the sewer Peter has the henchman hanging upside down by a web over a pack of rats. Peter pretty much scares the guy to the point were he probably pissed himself, and tells him to warn everyone that his family is off limits unless you want to die. At the hospital Peter watches over May. MJ tells Peter that they are running out of money fast, and that people are bond to catch onto her identity. Peter tells MJ that there may be a way to help May without the help of doctors. (This is the cool part) Peter plans to do another blood transfusion like he did early in his career to help May, but this time there won’t be any doctors to purify the blood; it will be a straight transfusion. MJ gets the supplies Peter needs, and he does the transfusion himself. Even though Peter is weak from the transfusion he leaves to meet Kingpin at the time planned. At the prison all the cells begin to open, letting prisoners out. Kingpin walks down the center of the cell block in his classic white suit to meet a black suited Spidey, and Spidey is pissed.
To Be Continued

My Opinion

Really cool issue. It was well written, and it almost had a classic Spider-man feel to the book. I liked Garney’s art a lot, and the 1 page splash of Peter in the suit in the sewer was awesome, same with the last page. I really can’t wait for next issue where we will get to see a Spider-man/Kingpin battle royal, and heck Spidey will also have to make his way through the huge crowd of convicts, should be interesting. I really like the new developments on the Aunt May situation, and I find Peter’s idea to be interesting. I’m looking forward to next issue, and I hope you feel the same.

Another solid issue from the Back In Black saga. I enjoy the sewer scene. It is really scary to see Peter acted with such aggressiveness. This issue feels like the calm before the storm and the confrontation between Peter and Kingping should be interesting.

But I guess this issue proves that the story takes place before Daredevil released Kingpin, and Spidey won't kill Kingpin :(

And the awesome Black Spider-Man

It was a well-written and drawn issue, but I just can't myself excited about what's going on. Aside from the fact that we know Kingy won't die, Spidey vs. Kingy fights, IMO, were always kinda crappy. I mean, yea, Kingy's strong. For a human. But Spidey has SUPER-strength, and SUPER-speed. He could lift a truck if he wanted. Kingy should never have been a match for him, and it always felt like writers "cheated" when they fought, with crap like Spidey underestimating his "impressive agility" or whatever. And now Spidey's much stronger and faster than he's ever been. I don't see how this could possibly lead to an exciting fight, unless Kingy has a whole army of heavily armed prisoners to back him up.

Great issue.Hey,let's not forget that spidey is very weakened due to the blood transfusion. He might have problems fighting Kingpin like that.

I thought that it was a great issue. I can't wait to see this big fight between Kingpin and Spidey and how the transfusion is going to work out.

I don't know if Aunt May could survive a tranfusion with Peter's blood. :(

Although that may be put off next issue, because it black suited Spider-man vs the Kingpin, here's hoping for A Daredevil appearance to stop the fight. :D

Just kidding.

This issue was good and the ramifications of the next issue should be far reaching. Can't wait.

OK, so this issue Spidey gives May a transfusion, and in two issues, the covers go all homagey to the last time he did that. Coincidence?

No. How about Daredevil tries to stop the fight then gets a Spider-man beat down.

That sewer pic by Garney, it really needed to land that image of a Spiderman that was dark as Daredevil and as menacing as the Punisher. It didn't quite make it. Looked too bright a background and Spidey was like a shoolboy bully.

But your take on Spidey having to wade through the convicts may happen, and the fight might not occur between Kingpin and Peter. Maybe that's why Kingpin is in his finery, because he knows the image will have an effect on Peter as being arrogant till the end. But there is no end. We know, because Fisk is let out in DD.

I like how he draw Spidey, but he has his own weak point. Sometimes his Spidey's head has a strange shape and the white spider emblem looks funny

Nothing major will happen to him. He is going to beat the hell out of those guys the way he did waaaaaaaaaay back in Web Of Spiderman 110 or so when he faught those criminals in the jail while Maximum Carnage was going on

What Spiderman really needed, to put the fear into that hood, was to use some Mysterio props. Some dummies with their arms ripped off, and Peter holding an arm, and waving it around, with the appropriate gaul bladder strawn about.

Wasn't there a good Mysterio in the bunch of 3?

I think the issues by themselves are great, but as I read them I can't help but feel like they are taking 2 issues worth of story and stretching it waaayyyyy out.

Another good issue. I'm so eager to see this arc catch up to the rest of Spidey's appearances. I'm pretty sure it takes place before all of them, and I want to see how it all fits and Mary Jane's reaction to Peter being in the black suit again.

If Spider-Man doesn't kill Kingpin, this whole arc will be a let-down, and I'll be convinced Spidey is a wimp.

After what Kingpin did to May, if Spidey doesn't waste him, it looks like he's both letting himself get walked on, and can't keep up his resolve.

The thing is, if he does kill Kingpin - especially with witnesses all over - his Spidey career is unrecoverable.

Anyway, I'm hoping he kills him. It's about time the Kingpin finally paid for his crimes. And that stuff he spouted about how it's a law of nature for him NOT to die...the arrogance!

If Spidey doesn't kill him, I'm going to be pretty disgusted....

He can't kill the Kingpin, because of the continuity implications for Daredevil. Fisk has "already" been released from prison and left the country, as part of the deal which the editorial note in this issue alluded to. Which I agree makes this story arc a little boring.

Well to be honest he should just tell kingpin that if his aunt dies (or when) then he will kill him. And give the message in such clear way that kingpin realise he is a dead man walking. if not then everybody there know that they can go after peter parker if Spiderman messes with them. He needs to close that weakness. Make the criminals realise that touching or just looking bad at some of peters freind carries a death penalty. If not then, well he can just hang the costume up becouse no way in hell you can make a belivebol story on why you can go after Peter Parkers freinds to get back at him.

That looks amazing.:D

Also, from what I hear, Madam Web is going to be involved soon. You know what would be cool? If she died while helping peter and the transfusion caused aunt may to become the new Madame Web. That way, she would be able to watch over peter, take care of herself and Mj, and a lot of other cool stuff. That would be awesome. To bad it won't happen.:D

Spidey-kid1

Also, one thing. Now that peter does what he does and stuff, he's no longer pure. Morlun won't come after him again. It would be cool to see a confrontation between the new black suit Spidey and Morlun, just to see what Morlun says.:D

Yet again another awesome issue...sometimes i wish garney and JMS would never leave the title. I have no complaints about the art or the writting which is very rare for a comic book...damn BiB has been good.

Well, this is building up to something intense....

But I hope JMS adds something to the Kingpin-Spidey enmity(even we know he won't be dead) that it lasts for a long time, and hopefully leaves an impact just as DD-Kingpin's enmity did.

He won't kill him, because in DD kindgpin is already out and happy. But this has been one amazing issue! I'm telling you, this actually shows some character, great diologue, I haven't read a single issue like this in quite a while!

This is why "Amazing Spider-Man" is the best Spidey title out there. The writing and art is just fab! The sewer scene was just perfect. The darkness and the tone was pure classic. JMS and Garney are a great team and are definitely delivering the best "Black In Black" story. I'm so looking forward to next issue. At last we'll get to see a Spider-Man and Kingpin fight to the death with prison inmates. It can't get any better than that or can it? I've got a feeling Fisk will get a hell of a good beating.

I've been enjoying the arc, but what felt retarded to me is that he gave a blood transfusion, what, 3 minutes before he goes off to fight the Kingpin. Couldn't find a more suitable time for either. It was just a stupid stunt by the writer to make him weaker in his showdown with Fisk, but I think its just stupid.

Plot device? Sure, but it's not unreasonable for Pete to be, ummm, unreasonable, given that he's basically running on rage right now. And who knows, maybe this blood transfusion is going to play a role in One More Day.

Maybe the blood transfusion just worsens Aunt May's condition.

I am not worried about Spidey's current situation. He's angry now and he can kick Kingpin's and all the inmates' asses with no problem even with no full power. It's Spidey won't kill Kingpin thing that's worrying me

Another strong issue. I love the way Spider-Man and Kjingpin are written in this one. Spidey is strongarming while Kingpin is going back to the basics that made him such a HOF villian to begin with. The showdown is just one month away. FINALLY!

Well sounds like everybody loved this issue, but I had a few problems with it. The scene where the Kingpin rips apart his desk legs and all the money falls out and he gives it to the guard. How stupid! Like they dont have security cameras trained on his cell 24-7. Then he tells the guard to tell the other guards to look the other way, yeah like every single guard in the place is corrupt. How lame. Bribing the guard to let him out could have been done in a cooler way, like money transferred into his bank account and the guard could have looked down at his cellphone to see a million bucks sitting in his bank account or something. Instead he hands him a satchel of rolled up bank notes. Puh-lease!

Also this whole thing about no one at the hospital knows who Pete and MJ are. Shes a freakin super-model, soap opera star, world famous but everyone at the hospital thinks shes Ms. Reilly. Stooo-pid.

However, the scene where Pete gives Aunt May the blood transfusion was cool, I liked how he instructed MJ to go and find the medical equipment needed, rang very true with Petes science background. The transfusion opens up big possibilities and Im way more intrigued to see how that turns out than than next issues fight with Kingpin, which will feature Pete kicking Kingys ass (again) and then Kingy living to menace Spidey another day with the sly smile on his face. Whatever!

Just my thoughts.
