View Full Version : CBRdraws: THE JOKER

CBRdraws is simple. We pick a character from comics, games, cartoons, whatever, and then people post their own drawings of that character.
It never closes, so its not like you have to do a drawing by the end of the week, but if you want a challenge each week to draw something you didn't expect to, it might be a good excercise.
No level of skill required, this is just for fun. It can be a splash page or part of a story. It can be penicils, inks, colors, paint, photography... really anything goes.
This week, your assignment is to draw DC's JOKER!
Some Reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(comics)).
Have fun!

I was trying to paint directly in Photoshop and mess with filters, so here's my crappy Joker pics. :p
I did finally hand draw one I liked a lot and colored it, which I'll post here later.

Here's how I envision The Joker...
39112
I've always thought that the Joker should actually be this narcissistic, stunningly and androgynously beautiful, ultra-wealthy, spoiled, and pathologically-bored party boy and socialite from "old money"... good examples of his character would be the Macaulay Culkin character in "Party Monster", and the villain "Mok" in the old Nelvana animated film, "Rock and Rule". I personally think he works better with his nose also painted black or red, a la some artsy-fartsy mime... it would emphasize the spirit of cultured pretentiousness I'd like to see in him.
Batman, on the other hand, would be the "Great Gatsby" of Gotham: He's new money, and has had actually had to earn every penny... but, unlike the Gatsby character, in my reimagining of the mythos, Bruce Wayne would be the anti-socialite... He would be someone who truly cares too much, and pays dearly for it, every day of his life.
In my conception of things, the Joker is a sheltered "thrill-killer" who buys his popularity in the press and is largely idolized by the spiritually corrupt population of Gotham City. Bruce Wayne, on the other hand, is a no-nonsense engineering type who actually builds things that the world depends upon but, in order to accomplish that, he can't afford to be as irresponsible and childish as the Joker is.
Perhaps they went to prep school together, Bruce Wayne and The Joker. Perhaps there was always an uneasy relationship between them. But one thing's for sure: as I see things, it's the true heroes who are unpopular, as they take the hard road and make all the hard choices, while the villains are villains because they simply will not.
My sensibilities in this regard are considerably influenced by the late writer Ayn Rand, and my Batman would be more a true underdog, in much the same vein as Gary Cooper in "High Noon" or "The Fountainhead". The Joker, of course, would be very much an Ellsworth Toohey sort of character... a skillful social manipulator, and a person of no little power and influence in the community.

^ that would be a great starting point for an Elseworlds.

thanks... I also have a completely new and, I think, much more compelling motif for Batman's motivation and inner struggle... it would make the character and the entire mythos much more meaningful than it was ever really fleshed out to be...

I'm glad you said Ayn Rand at the end; I was TOTALLY thinking 'Henry Rearden' about Bruce Wayne until I read that.
