IMMORTAL IRON FIST ANNUAL #1
Written by ED BRUBAKER & MATT FRACTION
Painted Art & Cover by DAN BRERETON & HOWARD CHAYKIN
THE BOOK OF THE IRON FIST, written on parchment made from the dragon scales of Shou-Lao the Undying, tells the life stories and kung fu secrets of every man and woman to hold the mantle of the Immortal Iron Fist -- except two. One, Danny Rand, the current Iron Fist, is the possessor of this most remarkable book. The other is Orson Randall, the Golden Age Iron Fist, and all his life he remained an enigma, even while trying to outrun the Iron Fist legacy. If Danny hopes to unlock the last mysteries of the Iron Fist, he'll have to track down Orson's long-lost life story and learn his secrets before it's too late. This unique annual both enriches the current Iron Fist storyline THE SEVEN CAPITAL CITIES OF HEAVEN and serves as a perfect jumping-on point for new readers.
48 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99
Immortal Iron Fist has been fantastic so far and the Annual is sure to be a great read. As the solicit says, it will be a perfect jumping on point for new readers to the series as well!
Who else looks forward to this?

Annuals SHOULD be good jumping on points. That's what I liked best about the early Annuals

The writing will be awesome but I fear the art won't. Howard Chaykin on art is not a good thing.

There was a Golden Age Iron Fist, but if that's true then why didn't he show up in any of the Golden Age tales of the Marvel Universe ?

Well, we'll have to wait and see on how the art will be, now don't we? :D

Howard Chaykin did the art on New Avengers #21 and Blade. I seen his stuff and it's been awful. I don't expect it to be any better on Iron Fist annual.

I agree but Brubaker's writing more than makes up for it.:D

Howard Chaykin did the art on New Avengers #21 and Blade. He's not the greatest artist for straightforward superhero fare, but this type of pulp/adventure story should be more in his wheelhouse.

Well, I think we should wait and see. Who knows how the art will turn out. Plus, the solicit for the Annual says:
Painted Art & Cover by DAN BRERETON & HOWARD CHAYKIN
So wouldn't that mean that both are doing art for the Annual?

Because Orson Randall was active in World War I.

Confirmed by Matt Fraction!
Brereton's doing interiors, too. It goes between Dan and Howard, as has been our style.
So it seems both will be doing interiors for the Annual. That's great news.

That is my only fear. I can't stand his art, but I'll pick it up, just because I love Iron Fist

I think it'll be fine. Both Brereton and Chaykin will be doing the interiors. And it'll be done in the form of David Aja and Travel Foreman. Where Aja does the art as a regular, and Foreman does the art for the Iron Fist's of the past. So I think Brereton will be doing most of the issue and Chaykin might do the scenes of Orson's past.
This Annual sounds like it's going to be great. And to be honest, is the right thing to do for this book. I love Annuals, so I'll be picking this up for sure.
But it will tie into the second arc?

Oh god no! I thought it was going to look like the cover. I don't want to see Chaykin doing pages on his own.

Yes, like the solicit says, the Annual will tie into the second arc of Immortal Iron Fist where Danny participates in a kung fu tournament.
Oh god no! I thought it was going to look like the cover. I don't want to see Chaykin doing pages on his own.
Well, the solicit says "Painted Art" so I think we'll be seeing more of Brereton's work rather than Chaykin's.

In a new interview with newsarama, Fraction talked little bit more about the Annual:
http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=118245
NRAMA: You’ve also got an Immortal Iron Fist annual coming out with work by Dan Brereton and Howard Chaykin – what was it like collaborating with them?
MF: I’m intimidated. I’ve only seen the cover thus far, though. I’ve long admired-- hell, downright loved-- both of their work, and Chaykin’s a personal hero of mine so... yeah, I dunno, I just don’t want anybody to be embarrassed. We’ll see.
NRAMA: How long do you plan to stay on your current books?
MF: I know kind of where I think I want to get off on Punisher. I think I’ll let the second year figure it out for me; I’ll stay at least through #25 or #26. Iron Fist is going to go on as long as they let us go. The Order, I have the first year planned – it was upgraded from a mini to an ongoing, so hopefully we can keep on doing that.
