I heart Tintin. The comics AND the cartoon. The intro was so cool:

Random question of the day, Niche Writers or Jack of All Trades?
I think pretty much everyone here has certain writers they 'follow' from project to project, or who will try out a book based just on whose writing it. And of course, niche writers are the ones whose work tends to focus on the same themes or subject matter. Like the writers known for their crime stories, their takes on mythology, or the prevalence of 'fight the power' themes in their stories. Some upsides of this is people know what to expect from the writer, and if they liked a lot of their previous work, they're probably going to like their next project. Some downsides of this is sometimes the stories are so close they can seem redundant. And in contrast, Jack of All Trades are the writers who leap from genre to genre and never tackle the same subject matter twice. The ups of this are the writer's new projects might be more visibly 'fresh' and exciting, and the con's might be that they turn to subject matter you have absolutely no interest in, like a fantasy fan who isn't even a little interested in their fave writer's new sci-fi project.
So which kind of writer do you tend to follow most? If you had to pick one 'type' of writer to follow, which do you imagine it'd be? Any particular reason for that? Do you see one 'type' as more preferable or 'safer' than the other?
Discuss.
(Yes, I'm really bored. But honestly curious. Sue me.)

I tend to follow writers with a particular way of writing that atracts me (doh'). So I guess it's a no for the themes, and a yes for style. I'm a sucker for dialogue, so one the first things I pay attention to when I read something by someone for the first time is the dialogue, the voice and the charaterization. Vaughan won me over with Runaways and Y The Last Man (probably during the same time. I was completely in love with his writing).

This is kind of the discussion between the "auteurs" (such as Welles, Hitchcock, Renoir, Ford, etc), directors with their very distinctive style and views, and, well, jack-of-all-trades of the world (like William Wyler, Victor Fleming, Michael Curtiz, etc) who did really all kinds of movies and you wouldn't recognized he's the director unless you saw their names on the credits that happened between critics and directors in the 50's and 60's specially. I personally prefer writers (or filmakers, for that matter) whom you recognize their style and thematic after reading some pages and whom i always expect to be good. Sure not all of them are (Claremont on the last 10 years, for example, in my opinion, but let's not turn it into this type of argument), but they are usually a safe bet. But that doesn't mean i can't enjoy stories by the "jacks" too.

I prefer the auteurs (as Omega Alpha appropriately labeled them).
Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Jason, Warren Ellis, Adrian Tomine, Mike Allred, Daniel Clowes, Eric Powell, Mike Mignola, Chaeles Burns, Jeff Smith, Darwyn Cooke, Frank Miller, Los Bros Hernandez, etc.
A lot of those guys do work-for-hire, jack-of-all-trades stuff to, but I generally prefer their auteur stuff and if forced to choose, that's the stuff I'd follow. I'm the same with film.
But there are jack-of-all-trades kinda guys I like very much too. Robert Kirkman, Brian K. Vaughan, Brian Michael Bendis, Kurt Busiek, Frank Cho, etc. But those guys (and most of the ones) I like have also done auteur stuff I really really love.

I thought it was decent. It was less "torture porn-ish" than the first one, but it also had far fewer boobs despite the potential for hundreds of them. It tried to be different from the first, and attempted some interesting things with the narrative, but I won't get into those so I don't spoil anything.

When i was thinking of auteurs, it wasn't in such a restricted way you did. They can, and more often than not do work for hire. But the difference is that no matter when they are, their style, views, themes, doesn't get lost in the middle of the superheroics stuff, and their work is distinguished from anyone else's. A comic from Ellis, Millar, Morrison or Bendis can always be recognized easily. It's not always the case with lots of writers (or most of them).

I enjoy most of their work for hire too. Their work does shine through, that's the definition of an auteur. But generally I prefer most of those guys' real auteur stuff, the stuff where they have complete creative control and are often creator-owned.
But stuff like Morrison's New X-Men, Vaughan's The Escapists, Ellis' Stormwatch, Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man, Cooke's New Frontier, Busiek's Avengers, Miller's Daredevil, etc. are all quality books IMO. Some of that isn't really work for hire, but it is examples of auteurs being able to play with Marvel and DC's toys and still produce work that is very auteur.

evenin' gang...
kalen posed an interesting question today -- bored or not...
i've always liked character driven books...claremont did it (not trying to start and argumemy) but others did too...morrison's books were always character driven, even if i didn't like him on the xmen...
then there's lee/kibry...
twi said to me a while back that i was stuck in decades past (or something to that effect)...maybe i am...those writers who jump from book to book don't get the feeling of what the book is all about...
i'm rambling and probably not making any sense, so i'll shut up...

Gah! But speaking of comics being bad, I HATE doing rewrites of scripts. Like, I loathe them with every fiber of my being. First drafts are fun, they just come right out for me no problem, even if significant portions are crap. But then coming back to them a day later and rereading, and knowing you have to pretty much rewrite the entire last five pages, and a lot of your earlier dialogue doesn't ring right and your scene transitions are a little off....and you know damn well exactly WHERE you need to make the changes, but your mind is completely blank and you can't come up with a single alternative line of dialogue...
Ugh.
Hate rewrites.
Not that anyone cares, of course, lol. Still.

Strictly in a poser/wannabe capacity. Its what I want to do, but I can't exactly call myself a writer at this point, lol. Got like, five different projects I'm currently trying to get published. This script in particular needs to be done like, yesterday, because my artist has been waiting on it for like a week. *Hates on the juggling real work with wannabe work shtick* We're trying to have a submission package for it ready by ComicCon, which means, like a month to finish it and so much shit still to do. Really I'm just looking over circumference of Philadelphia. Any ad agency that has a decent design department would be pleasant. My teacher gave me a list of places to investigate, such as Stick & Move. I have to set up some appointments at school before summer ends to move forward with the internship business as I'm doing it for school credit & the counselor there has to "officially" set it up for you.
So...sounds like you're writing project is in the works. What genre of comic is it? Also, how is the teaming up with an artist working? Has he/she brought any of your ideas to "life" yet?
I'm sooooo strung out right now... I'm not sure why...

Sounds cool man! Should definitely be an interesting experience. Good luck with that!
And the current project is urban fantasy, I suppose. Also got an kids sci-fi book, and a post-apocalyptic superhero title. And yeah, all three of my artists have been awesome to work with so far. Ale, the artist on this urban fantasy one, in particular has this awesome quirky style that I just love. We've done a lot of preliminary concept art and character work, but he's just waiting on this script now to continue. Its seriously cool to see an artist's interpretation of the stuff stuck in my head though.

That sounds excellent! Urban fantasy...like Runways or darker/lighter than that? Or something completely different?
As for the artist's interpretation, does it generally match what you picture in your head? Sounds like you're pleased with it.

Like Runaways in a lot of ways, and as for darker/lighter....dunno. The story involves a trip into Hell, so draw your own conclusions. And some of the artist's interpretations match what was in my head, some was pretty different but ended up working better, so we seem to mesh pretty well.

I haven't checked you page out in a while - I spend most of my time on my facebook as opposed to myspace - I just find it easier. I'll check them out.
I just don't have the time to train as much as I should - it's really annoying. I'm dropping 75 press-ups, sit-ups, squats, leg raises and star jumps every morning though so I'm keeping in shape!
You should totally join a golf club - unless yours is really stuffy! There's bound to be one near you somewhere which is friendly and not too stuffy. Then you can just join in with randoms and play in competitions and stuff. A mate of mine got a cracking job offer just by playing a round of golf randomly with a local business man who he really got on with!

ditto. I got a really good stir-fry chicken recipe last week with mango, zuccini, carrot, cashew nuts and some other stuff - enough for 3 meals and it stayed really fresh. The great thing's the time - you can do it in 20 minutes!
Yea I made some last night we carrots, broccoli, little pea, some garlic and some soy sauce. Good stuff. I found cooking really is a turn on for most women.

Yes - I am that shallow!

I get up early in the morning and jog a 2 miles, then work out for an hour. It's a nice way to wake yourself up. I get up at like 5am most mornings. I refuse to do it Saturday/Sunday though. Weekend is break time.

That sucks, I've got it down to a pretty good routine. I eat a banana as I stretch and it takes me about 20 minutes to do the job/run and my workout is pretty quick, usually 5-6 excerises only, 2-3 sets of each. Sometimes while I watch TV or surf internet I'll do a couple things like push ups or sit ups at night. The best fucking cardio though, and it's not boosting, sex. Jenna Jameson was right when she said the only cardio she does to keep in shape is fuck.

Stir-fry is something I'm really starting to love to cook.Indeed, chicken stir-fry is a staple of my diet. Whether it's teriyaki, szechwan, sesame, or my dad's famous recipe soy-sauce stir fry.
I just don't have the time to train as much as I should - it's really annoying. I'm dropping 75 press-ups, sit-ups, squats, leg raises and star jumps every morning though so I'm keeping in shape!Nice man, I can't do that morning workout stuff though, it's too early. I'd rather hit the weights when I get home from work when I'm completely awake and jacked up. Gotta work the shoulders and arms tonight.

Then you can just join in with randoms and play in competitions and stuff. A mate of mine got a cracking job offer just by playing a round of golf randomly with a local business man who he really got on with! I was thinking about it early this spring, but I've been so busy with so many things that it woulda been tough, not to mention I don't know how much it would cost. I have a bit more free time now, so maybe next year.
Most leagues around here aren't "stuffy", unless you go to a really expensive course, the leagues are basically "booze'n'swing" types leagues.

My head hurts really bad.
That'll teach me not to not charge my iPod over the weekend and then throw it in my bag thinking it had a full charge and getting to school and realizing I was going to have to ride the bus for forty five minutes to get home but without the benefit of music to drive out the sounds of the street such as rambunctious raggamuffins, wretching and quarreling street vagrants and then getting on the bus and trying to read a comic to alleviate the boredom but then remembering after five pages that I can't read in wheeled objects without getting sick.
Not having your iPod throws you into Charles Dickens's England. At least while traveling.

Sexy/Back I'll give him--but "My Love" and the rest of the crap on that cd drives me to tears.
