Hi! My 1st post here!

I'm trying to hunt down comics that I had as a little kid, somehow lost, and that have forever haunted me to this day!

One was "Starman" ('70s?). I thought it was the debut issue?? Basically it starts off on a planet inhabited by ocean-faring folk, then evil slavers arrive in spaceships & round everybody up and into the spaceships to be used as slaves.

Starman comes into the picture, this loner in a transparent spaceship I think? There is a flashback to how his father crashlanded on Earth with his co-astronaut (a cat person, who dies in the crash). A woman rescues him from the wreckage, they fall in love, and give birth to a baby son (Starman).

Something along those lines...

Now, I'm trying to find this comic! Do any of you know what I'm talking about?

I think on the front cover it had something like "Did he come to save the world, or destroy it?"

I bought a comic on eBay that had this quote on the front (Starman "1st Issue Special" or something) - but it wasn't the same story inside!

If anybody can help, I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks! :)

That sounds something like Star-lord, to me:

The issue you want is Marvel Preview #11 (this is a magazine-sized black & white comic):

There was also a color "Special Edition" of this comic published in the 80s, but the artwork is much better in black & white, IMO (the pages are also larger).

Star-Lord's first appearance was in Marvel Preview #4, but not the same story as what you describe above.

Leaving aside the question of "Graham", I think that the right issue is actually this one:

#11 is a different Star-Lord entirely - I don't think I've ever read #11, but I had #4, and that story definitely sounds like the one from #4

#11 is a different Star-Lord entirely - I don't think I've ever read #11, but The story he described -- the sea-faring folk who are enslaved into spaceships at the beginning of the comic -- is unquestionably from #11. This is one of my all-time favorite and most-read comics.

This is the color reprint (of #11) from 1982, which shows some of the actual characters involved:

Please allow me to suggest that you may be mis-remembering. Issue #4 is just his origin story (which is recounted briefly in #11). It starts with his mother meeting the alien and ends with him becoming Star-Lord.

Now, what's nagging at me is the "Did he come to save the world, or destroy it?" blurb that he mentioned. That sounds quite familiar, but it doesn't appear on any of the four Marvel Preview issues featuring Starry (the other two are #14 and #15, which are completely ruined by some of the worst Carmine Infantino artwork I've ever seen). Maybe it was from the Table of Contents tag-line or something?

.

BTW this was the comic I owned as a kid - and it was b/w, not colour.

This is one of my all-time favorite and most-read comics.

I'm glad you dig it too! Yes it was a fabulous story.

Thanks again, guys!

Nothing new to add except I too love this Claremont & Byrne production.

Shane they didn't do any more "StarLord" stuff ...

It looks like you might have had two comics confused.

There was also a comic from DC First Issue Special series. Issues 12 featured another take on Starman.

This one featured the cover line "Has he come to save the Earth or Destroy it?"

The character showed up later in James Robinson's Starman series

Yoicks and away

Timbo, you are quite correct. I had confused Starman and Star-Lord.

However it is Star-Lord mentioned above that I was after - and is on its way to me as we speak! Yippee!
