View Full Version : Considering buying Planet Hulk HC...

I've been considering buying the Planet Hulk HC on Wednesday, but the steep price tag has me approaching cautiously. Although I have heard the title has been very good since Pak took over and think the offworld "Gladiator" storyline sounds like a great idea, would people recommend picking up the HC to a lapsed Hulk fan who hasn't read the title since David left back after the Onslaught nonsense? The price isn't necessarily a concern (flush right now), my recent TPB wishlish has been completed with pickups of Alice in Sunderland, Black Diamond Detective Agency, and The Other Side, I have a fondness for Marvel's HCs in general, and have enjoyed what I've read of the build-up to WWH, Hulk 106 and the WWH Prologue. Still, I'm not going to commit $40 without a little feedback. Thanks in advance.

I liked it alot but it's the only exposure I've had from the Hulk besides his early comics that were written by Stan, the movie and video game. I tried to read the current stuff, but I got bored with seeing Bruce Banner as I skimmed through the comic at my LCS.

Anywho, PLanet Hulk is a HULK story and has little Bruce Banner.

IMO it's like Star Wars + LOTR/Gladiator + Awesome Art + PISSED OFF HULK!!!

Even though everybody knew pretty much how it was going to end, it still was a great epic story and IMO it's worth checking out.

Yeah, just imagine the Russell Crowe gladiator movie, then switch Crowe with Hulk and Rome with Sakaar, and you've basically summed up the series.

It's a great read, and Carlo Pags' art is phenomenal, he's definitely on the road to being a star-artist. Lopresti's stuff was good too, but it looks like they told him to emulate Pags' style somewhat.

But yeah, pick up this story, you won't be diappointed.

If the price is too steep, you might consider checking out Amazon. They have it priced at $27.00.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I did pick up Planet Hulk on Wednesday, and I greatly enjoyed it. It's right up there with the second half of "The Pantheon Saga" (IH 400-425, especially Rick Jones' wedding) as my favorite Hulk story of all time. $40 well spent.

ok i've finished it. overall i liked it. i wish Hiroim and Brood and the robot had a little more 'air time', and the final part with the spaceship blowing up was a little.... convenient. but i suppose they needed a tragedy like that to happen for Hulk to get pissed mad and head towards Earth. a pretty rewarding read all in all

oh, and i prefered Miek before he morphed

I bought 2 copies. One to read and one for gift giving to future hulk fans 10-15 years from now. This is a landmark story arc for the Hulk and we will still talk about this story years later.

I recommend getting the hardcover.

This is good advice. The price tag turned me off, too. Unless I can find it cheaper elsewhere, I'll be waiting for the eventual softcover.

We,, I've been waiting for the trade since part one of planet hulk came out, knowing it would make an amazing collection, and having just finished it, I've gotta say it delivered. Although I knew a few details from the hype around WWH, I managed to avoid most of the plot over the last year, and its definetely an epic, and its relative isolation from the rest of marvel's books and the little you need to know beyond hulk's basic premise, makes me think this story is going to age REALLY well. The writing and art compliments each other perfectly, and really my only complaint is that he had to go back to earth. I could have read another 12 issues of his new world easily, but obviously marvel feel now is the time to strike. The book may be expensive, but only due to the sheer quantity and quality it manages to deliver in one helping. My only hope now is that when all is said and down after WWH, the mysterious third act involves the green scar and his warbound returning to the stars to find a place they do fit in.

Oh yea, if you're lookin' for a great story, buy it! I have practically all of the Planet Hulk arc except for #104 and #106, do you think they'll make 2nd printings of these? I don't wanna buy the HC just to have the missing #104 in the Planet Hulk arc...

I picked my HC up earlier today and it looks great.I was hoping to see the Champions flashback reprinted but maybe that'll make it into the WWH HC instead.I want to hold off and read it when I go on vacation but thats still over a month away.I don't know if I can hold out that lol :D

I think it's worth every penny. I'd have to say PH was one of my most favorite arcs in all of comics, not just The Incredible Hulk. It's worth every penny.

Yeah definitely take this route.

I've learned that Amazon has most trades, hardcovers and Omnibuses way cheaper than retail price and you don't even have to pay all that much in shipping. In fact I just ordered the Fantastic Four Vol. 2 Omnibus for $66.98 with shipping and everything.

Yeah all the stuff on Amazon is marked down like 40% or so. Ive got three omnibuses and about 10+ HC collections. The shipping (to canada none-the-less) is normally like 5 bucks for the medium speed.

I do everything from Amazon.com since retailers up in Canada follow the price set when the Canadian Dollar was much lower. The Omnibuses in canada go for 120 bucks CND vs 60ish USD. Its pretty stupid when you take into account that the canadian dollar is only three cents away from the american dollar.

Canadians right now are getting price gouged like crazy when it comes to comics.

Not much although it does include the 'WWH handbook' which I actually found interesting for a change!

Of all the Marvel HC's I've bought recently though, this is one of my favourites!

I just read the Planet Hulk Hard Cover by Greg Pak, and was blown away by it's ferocity. At no point was any of the Warbound unaffected by the incidents on Sakaar. Everyone was tested to the fullest for their loyalty and dedication towards ther pact. All the Warbound set the pact, and stuck to it.

And yet, when it came time that one or another of the group was to take the lives of their enemies, they found a reason to not commit the coup de grac. And the Hulk was mostly the one who put it in the individuals face by sacrificing hisown self-harm to disarm their anger. For monsters, these Warbound showed an uncommon amount of humanity in their compassion.

This almost read like a Frank Herbert Dune novel, where Hulk was the destined Worm King of Dune, and all the races of the planet had some legend that fortold of the Hulks inevitability. It even had the Herbertesque surprise ending that nobody saw coming. But I could never suspect any of the Warbound of making the Planet disintegrate, not after the savagery they went through, and all they had gained from victory. I place the sole blame for this on core breach on the Red Kings scientists, who were the first to examine the vessel. They had the most to gain, to sabotage the ship, for one of the Red Kings mad gladiatorial exhibitions.

Every Warbound encounter was highly charged in emotion. Every Warbound was tied to the other, in the experience they had on Sakaar. And every Warbound was acting as if they were on Sakaar when they reached earth. Nothing was out of character, as far as the Hulk and the Warbound were concerned. It made perfect sense was how the Sakaarians behaved like they did on earth, and with the earth heros. The dichotomy of the two worlds circumstances is greatly evident, in that Sakaar was a powder keg just waiting to explode, and, the earth was this peaceful, well-organised intelligence, with no experience of hostile brutality on any scale. Putting the two worlds together, made it appear like Sakaarians were a hyper-Marvel Universe, gone to excess. Every possible tragedy that you could imagine happening, in apocalyptic proportions, was happening on Sakaar. It appears there could be no contrived reconciliation on Sakaar, because the world was a festering sore, that hemoraged no matter what peaceful consequence occurred.

Greg Pak has nothing but pure tragedy coming out of Sakaar, and he has put it in the peaceful confines of the earth. Have you ever heard of a boiling chip? It is put into a container of liquid that has trouble being brought to the boil. When the ceramic chips are sprinkled into the liquid near the boiling point, the liquid rapidly boils and the liquid evaporates. That's what the Sakaarians are to the Marvel Universe. Boiling chips.
