View Full Version : What do you purchase online?

Before last year I always refused to purchase stuff online. I just looked at my bank statements from the past year and discovered that I've easily spent three thousand dollars in online stopping. I can't say exactly how much I've spent because I stopped looking at my old bank statements and promised myself no more online shopping. Five minutes later I bought Hellsing Ultimate volume 1 and an E Nomine CD off f Amazon which gets the majority of my business.

In order to make myself feel better I want to know what you guys purchase if you do onlline shopping. I generally limit myself to books, CDS, DVDs and graphic novels and video games.

I buy a lot of things online. Papa John's pizza, and everything else is from Amazon, except of course my daughter's stuff. Frankly I've grown comfy with the whole online purchasing thing.

Mostly just TPBs, from Amazon, eBay, instocktrades.com, wherever.

I recently bought the entire Superman radio show on mp3 DVD.

Just tried to sneak that one in there, eh? :p

As for myself, I've bought DVD's, CD's and old comics online. I think that's it.

I don't know if prepaid iTunes vouchers count as you spend the money in a store and then download the music.

Otherwise, zip.

The only things I don't buy online are those things I can either pick up where I work, or are close enough to make walking not a hassle. But I have gotten to the point where 90% of my non grocery shopping is done online.

Books (mostly off half.com), old comics off ebay, music, and movies. I've ordered pizza online a couple times, but there are some great slice places a block or two a way so I don't really do it anymore.

Does your state have higher prices for the cigarettes?

When I was a teen they went for two bucks a pack. Now I think they are seven dollars a pack due to various taxes. The revenue from cigarettes pays for everything in my state, schools, to government employees salaries. Because of that Springfield was quick to draft and pass legislation making it illegal to import your cigarettes and then sued online vendors who sold the stuff. Here is an article about it, but as the article pointed out their are many ways to import your cigarettes despite what the legal restrictions.

Wow. SC is a tobacco state (import). Not sure about GA.

EDIT: I should add that SC taxes all online purchases as well. Even itunes. :(

Import comics, import books, DVDs, CDs.

For comics only those that have an ISBN (no floppies), of course. It's simply cheaper than using a comicshop to import them (without ISBNs it would be just the other way around). I currently get exchange rate minus 10% (a special promotion offer; that's about 67 Eurocent to the Dollar at an exchange rate of 75, while most import comicshops won't go below 85 or 90 because international shipping eats up all their wholesale discounts and more) for english books and comics at one of the larger national online booksellers.

German books or comics I'd never buy online. Since Germany still has fixed prices for books (and comics also count as books), online sellers can't undercut local stores, so there's no reason not to support my LCS (and I'm quite content doing so).

French comics I'd also never buy online because a) the shipping kills (even though they're right "next door") and b) more than half of what I order would probably be damaged (all their manga have dust jackets... looks great, but is delicate as heck).

DVDs and CDs have no price protection, so I often buy cheaper online (there's no store with a selection worth looking at and decent pricing to support around here anyways).

BTW: what else would it make sense to buy online? Can't think of anything that couldn't be bought just as well in a brick-and-mortar store.

I think smokers should take comfort in the fact that they cigarette prices have tripled in my state. Yes, you are getting raked over the coals for purchasing a product that is legal but on the plus side there is no way the Federal and State government is going to make smoking illegal when it's such a cash cow no matter how many people suffer from second hand smoke.

I read a study in a German magazine here where they figured out how much a pack of cigarettes would have to cost to actually cover the cost smoking imposes on society. It was something like € 25 a box (over 30 $ US). And yes, they did figure in that smokers collect less social security because they die younger. But just having 40% less cancer cases would make up for that.

So basically, us non-smokers haven be subsidizing the smokers' smoking habits all our lives with the taxes we pay.

I'm guessing there are a lot of ways to run those numbers. I saw a similar study that suggested that less than a dollar of taxes per pack was required. (I think that it was just $.55.) OTOH, I'm not against higher taxes. I'm ok with the principle of using taxation to influence behavior as long as it isn't used against behavior that I agree with.

Unfortunately, we're doing the reverse for a lot of the things that I want to encourage/discourage. We get taxed more heavily for using recycled product and gas guzzling vehicles get higher tax breaks.

Back on subject ...:)

I buy a lot online. Books, DVDs, CDs, some individual songs, charitable donations, and some niche stuff (like some RPG stuff, anime stuff, Monty Python toys, etc.)

I actually went to the store first, but they did not have my pants size, and the shirts I liked were not in the stores either. I know my pants and shirt sizes, so I wasn't going in blind. Also, I ordered one pants and one shirt from ON with my sizes first, and they fit fine. Now I know I can order some more with little worry.
