View Full Version : Wherefore Art Thou, Squadron Supreme?

Maybe it's because I've always been primarily a fan of DC's characters, but "Squadron Supreme" is my favorite current Marvel title. Unfortunately, it's the main title I'm most interested in, far more than the spinoffs. I didn't particularly care for Hyperion, I didn't hear great things about Nighthawk, and Ultimate Power hasn't quite attracted my interest like I thought it would. I'll probably grab the HvsN tpb, though.

Something occurred to me today, though, that caused me to add up a few numbers, and the results are interesting. To date, there have been 18 issues of "Supreme Power" and 7 issues of "Squadron Supreme." 25 issues in all of the main title.

Over in spinoff land, though, there have been 6 issues of "Doctor Spectrum," 6 issues of "Nighthawk," 5 issues of "Hyperion," 4 issues of "Hyperion vs. Nighthawk," and 5 issues thus far of "Ultimate Power." A total of 26 issues.

Yep, there have been more issues now of Squadron Supreme spinoffs than of the main series. Something ain't right about that.

It's one of the best titles I've read from Marvel. I've loved it since day one. I think it's JMS' finest comic book work. I'm not sure if he has said anything about returning to the book or not, but Gary Frank is on Planet Hulk, so don't expect him to come back anytime soon.

Marvel lists the release date for Squadron Supreme #8 as October 4, 2006. Mike Deodato was to have taken over the art duties, which I thought was a good choice. I wonder whatever happened to that. I haven't heard anything about the Supremeverse in quite some time.

I've picked up every spinoff mini they've put out, my least favorite is Doctor Spectrum or Hyperion. I think the best one is the Nighthawk mini. That one was amazing.

How can one find out the status of this title?

Marvel has been vague on SQUADRON SUPREME's status. The last time someone asked Quesada about it on Newsarama's Q&A (three weeks ago), he said there'd be an announcement "soon enough" and that it the book would "have a new artist."

There's a thread over on the LitG forum about the situation, but perusing it doesn't tell me anything new.

There's about a million threads around here with the same question of What happened to Squadron Supreme?

I guess no one knows how to do a search.

But none of them have the numbers I shared; those are too new. And they were the main reason I posted the thread. "Hey, I noticed something kinda neat/depressing about SS" doesn't make a great thread title, though.

That's all I can find. I hope it comes soon. Really enjoyed the series so far

"Wherefore" means "why" not "where."

You could always buy some back issues of Authority to get your fix. Or try the "original" Squadron Supreme, the Justice League of America.
