My comic shop isn't getting it in so I have to rely on B&N. They don't get it in until the 28th.
I think there's a comic shop over in PA I might be able to hit up....hmmm.

This is the Previews Edition that came out today. the regular version hits at the end of August. This is definitley the version that members of this board will want to pick up. This is an amazing story!
What a great surprise at the comic shop! I'm glad I got this versions with the sketchbook of thumbnails in the back.

What all is in the Previews Edition to justify the extra $15? I picked this up and put it down a few times in the comics shop today before deciding against it (at least for this week).

This Previews Exclusive edition also features the original Hans Christian Andersen story that inspired the author, along with additional spot illustrations. An additional sketchbook section of art by Mike Mignola is also included, exclusively for this edition.

Although the sketchbook was less than I was hoping for, I think this is the version to get. The regular version wont have the short story, sketchbook pages, and will have a different cover.........

Tad,
Isnt Mike doing a signing for Baltimore in Burbank soon?
Yes. At Dark Delicacies bookstore. This from their site: (http://www.darkdel.com/) On September 22nd at 2 p.m., illustrator/writer Mike Mignola signs BALTIMORE,: OR, THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER AND THE VAMPIRE (hardback)
I believe they're doing their usual mail order thing where they'll get Mike to sign a copy to you.

Okay, so I'm confused a bit. There's an edition of Baltimore that hit comic shops this week that has a Mignola sketchbook session in the back, but the edition that will be shipping from sites such as Amazon and B&N won't have that section? Does that sound right?

Right. The Previews exclusive edition has the sketchbook and the original tale that inspired the book.
The regular edition is...well the regular edition :D

Thank you for letting me know. I wondered suspisciously why the Amazon.com version was $16 versus the $40 for the comic shop edition. I thumbed through the comic shop edition this afternoon and loved the sketchbook section, and abhored the idea that I'd miss out on that sketchbook by waiting around for Amazon to ship me their copy. Turns out my comic shop still has that copy I looked through available, so it's officially on hold until I can get there after work to purchase it. Proof positive that this board is doing good work in the world!

I picked it up at my local comic shop today. It is beautiful and the first couple of chapter have me hooked. The presentation of this book is just beautiful. Mikes black-and-white drawings throughout are gorgeous and minimal and I love that many of them are small and square format. The pencils at the back of the book are an awesome treat.

Is it known which edition Dark Delicacies will stock for their signing? I hope it's the Diamond Exclusive version, because I'd rather get that one signed. I plan to buy both, and might as well get the version they WON'T be stocking now to read, as I can't wait until September to read it!
Thanks,
Brisco
Hey Brisco..I think dark del will have the regular version...the one that came out this week is a diamond exclusive...I'll check with Del and let you know.
I was there Friday and they had the Diamond Exclusive at the time.

My copy has the sketchbook and the Han Christian Andersen story but I can't find any indication that it is a Diamond special. It is a beautiful book.
That's the Diamond Special = different cover, sketchbook, short story. Sketchbooks are always a matter of taste but it's rare to see Mignola pencil sketches.

Just made contact with Del and they have 9 copies of the special edition,so i would say that for the signing the majority of the book will be the regular edition.

Yes, and a rare treat indeed it was for this volume!
BTW, not sure who has and hasn't finished the novel at this point, so I won't give details or discuss spoilers, but I'd like to get a discussion going about the book itself. Anyone else enjoy it and if so, why?
I seem to have created a little bit of confusion, when I got this book from the comic store I did a search looking for the appropriate thread, and seem to have dragged the wrong one. I do appolagize to all including Neil Hill.
Sorry Guys:o

Mike Mignola is obviously sneaking around on my grandmother's property for inspiration.
Why would I say such a thing? Well I just returned from a trip to grandma's (no wolves were involved) in order to help her move into an assisted living situation. On a peice of her property lays an old house overgrown with vines and in the last stages of falling into itself. We both went down to this house because she said there was something in the house she wanted. Grandma is an avid collector (sometimes of things that only she believes to be collectible) and even at the age of 90 is still an intrepid spirit. Anyhoo, I tried to talk her out of it, most of the stuff in the house is junk and the only tennants now are mice and spiders, but there's no arguing with Grandma so we went down there. And even as I was complaining to her that she didn't need this or that I found a real jewel. It's a book full of WW1 photos taken by a group of US military engineers as they made their way through France. Look familiar?:

This question popped up in another thread. The general consensus was that they were meant to be that way so I think you're in the clear.
Mine has the same uneven pages. I kind of like it. Gives the book kind of an antique feel :D

These are actual photos not prints. The scans do them no justice. I believe that a relative was a part of the army engineer group ('301st Army Engineers' as stated on the cover of the book the photos are in, which is also original), but I'm not sure. Doing some detective work.
(I might be wrong about this, they might be prints, but they appear to be original photos. I've never seen a photo from 1919 before!)

In any case that's an awesome find. A real treasure. Maybe there are some WW2 photography forums you could post them on to try and get some more info on the history.
In any event keep us posted on what you find out.
Edit: WW1. I meant WW1!! :D

That's a great idea (pretty sure these are from WW1 though).
Yeah, I feel blessed to have found it and I kind of had to eat some crow from old Grandma as I wouldn't have gone down to that house. If it weren't for her insistance, all this great stuff would have been lost.
As I've said before, the more I become a part of it, the more interested I become in history.:o

The only reason I asked was because Lilitu said her grandma has some photos like that as well.
The tank is a FT-17 light tank in service with 326th battalion of the US tank corp, during the front lines in france. during world war 1. 1918.
They were also used in Italy. However Italy, had produced there own, which were slightly different, they were not in service till 1923. So that picture is most likely the years before.Of course the Barbed Wire were used to prevent the army from crossing.

Have you ever watched The Antiques Road Show? This album is the kind of thing that gets historians really excited especially with the provenence
of "301st Army Engineers". And the fact that is a family heirloom is awesome.

That makes much more sense.
Unfortunately, I think he's already done this. I'd prefer that she tell him to stay out of my Granny's things!
(strictly a fanciful jest Mignolas! :D you're all welcome at grandma's any time!)
I definitely plan on using the material as reference for work at some point. Some of the photos of destruction, demolished churches, shot up houses, craters, are brilliantly composed. It is pretty Mignoly territory though...

That's a pretty priceless trove you've unearthed. There were not a great many photographers around documenting WWI. I'm sure that historians and museums would be quite interested in at least having a look.

hi there!
im hoping someone can answer a question about the recent book "Baltimore..."
i work in a comic shop where we got in copies wich i was eagerly awaiting, but when i looked at it the ends of the pages were alll haggard and uncut like normal books.
the replacements we ordered were exactly the same, so we called up our ditributer and they said it was meant to be like that but i didnt believe them!
so can anyone clarify once and for all if the pages are meant to be like this or not?
thanks!

WOW!!!
Just FINALLY got finished reading Mike and Chris's novel...just a great story...loved the characterization ...particularly Demetrius...and the "Nemesis" type of relationship between Baltimore and the Red Death...just a wonderful ride ...Mike's illustrations were sparse and tasteful, as one would expect!
Edit: Just noticed that this is my 1000th post on this board...very fitting !
congrats on the 1000th posts.yeah, this is a great novel...i've read it twice and still love it....now let's end this writers' strike, so mike and chris can put together a script;)

I second that! I really enjoyed the book and the different take Chris took with the direction of the book - it was almost like a book of short stories strung together by a common thread. Really a great read if anyone hasn't picked it up yet. And, as always, Mike's illustrations helped capture the mood and setting of the book. They make a great team!
