I'm going through a very tramatic experience that isn't my fault for once. My dad and I started a bank account for me when I was in high school. I kept his name on the account even though he hasn't used in the 11 years I've had it. To make a long story short, due to an error of comunication where my dad owes back child support, the goverment took every penny we had all of our accounts and my balance in my checking account is -5000 dollars.

Needless to say this is a very tramatic deal for me as I've gone from being in the solid middle class to being indingent. My dad is seeing a lawyer tomarrow has vowed to pay me back and makes good money as he working full time, gets social security, and has several pensions. So over time we should be okay provided nothing else happens, but I'm really depressed right now as I type this.

I'm going to use this experience to redefine my self body and mind. It's either that or break down. I know others have it much worse but little things like paying the rent and buying food is much harder when your bank account foes frm four thousand to negative five thousand something. My dad's even worse he lost five times that. Still they took the money due to error and miscomunction between states so I'm confident much of this can be undone.

On the plus side my dad going to be paying my rent and bills because my check is direct deposit into my account and I'm not sure if I can stop that as the account been frozen and these things take time.

Lester i'm sure things will get sorted out. As you say this is due to an error anyway, and if your Dad's offered to pay the bills etc until it's sorted out then you're not in danger of being thrown on the street which is the most important thing.
It;s the weekend for you so probably not much to nothing is going to be done by anyone about this for at least a few days, so take a deep breath and try and take each day as it comes.

If you don't mind answering, since the topic is back child support does this mean you have step siblings?

Yes. They are all in their thirties and I've only seen them a few times in my life. What it looks like happened is that the State of IL did not comunicate to Wisconson that my dad paid what he was suppose to pay. We never even a letter from them as they sent letters my childhood home which we moved out of years ago.

The one ray of light is that all of September's bills have been paid and all once I stop m direct deposit I will have money. It sucks that I can't stop my direct deposit before my next check but my dad is going to reimburse me for it so it's good. Like I said we still have income coming in, more than enough to pay our bills, but right now all of our account balances are negative four thousand something.

I know when my step-father died, I was shocked to find he had a credit card in his and my name and owed nearly $20, 000.00.

Glad your dad plans to make things right, but if your siblings are in their 30's, why does he owe any back support if he makes good money?

Damn, Lester -- that's some major-league suckage!

(And I'm not just talking about the sound that the money made vanishing out of your bank account!)

Unfortunately, most states are heavy-duty followers of the First Law of Acquisition: "Once you have their money, you NEVER give it back"!

Not to add any more worries, but did your bank impose any overdraft fees? If so, is there any chance that, if you can prove that it was their fault, you can hit the state up for those, as well?

Best of luck, buddy!

It would be my dad suing them off and not me. My account was frozen too, but only because his name was on it when I started the account back in high school. I always meant to drop his name from it, but never saw any reason to. Anyyway most states protect themselves by writing laws saying you can't sue them and this was ten years ago so it would be next to impossible to see who made the clerical error.

Bad news for the Carthan household. It turns out the lean wasn't for child support but for something else that occurred thirty five years ago that my dad didn't know about. He's going to try to set up a payment plan and get our accounts unfrozen but since he actually owes the money I highly doubt they are going to give any of it back. The good news is that he does make very good money and should be back on his feet relatively quickly but everything he's saved over the course of a lifetime is gone.

You would think so, but I guess not. Now our only hope is for our lawyer to work out a payment plan or some kind of settlement. It's a long shot as they already wiped us out, but still better than no shot. It sucks the safety net gone, but other than that we are both in good spirts but man did we get clobbered.

To be fair I've always belived in the conservive mindset. I was actually a registed Republican until I was in my early twentes. I proudly voted for Bush and Dole. The only reason why voted for Kerry and now Obama is becase of what the Republican party has done to set back issues sacred to me like gay rights.

I'd like to thank everyone for the kind words. It's not all negative for me though as I'm doing very well in school and, after thirty years of searching, have finally found my vocation. I'm also losing quite a bit of weight. On top of all that everyone I care about is healthy so life still very good.

Even on the financial side things are getting better. I have my own bank account again at a different bank, which is legal and fine since the lean isn't against me, and all of my bills are being paid by my dad until everything settles.

Okay, I got called in today to help teach a class to a buncha beginning med students ... although why I said yes, I'll never know. It basically involved me talking about chemistry and the partial pressure exerted by CO2 inside the circulatory system.

Oh, now I know why. It got me out of going to the staff meeting!

ANYTHING is better than a staff meeting. I never learn anything from those. Well, I learned to wear VERY dark glasses at them, so dark that no one can see that my eyes are closed.

And how'd you do as a teacher?

Apparently I did okay! At least the REAL teacher said so ... I guess I wasn't TOO boring! The thing is, the person who was supposed to be talking to the class called in sick today, and the professor usually has actual working professionals talk to his class... and I was the only one available, even though I'm just a resident.

Why the guy just didn't teach the class himself is beyond me though! I think he's just lazy!

Mermaid

what's a toddy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_toddy

"

Hot toddy is a name given to a mixed drink that is served hot, believed to have originated in Scotland.[citation needed] Although there are many variations, essential ingredients are:

* a hot beverage which may be tea, coffee, cocoa, water, etc.
* an alcoholic spirit such as brandy, rum, or whiskey.
* usually a sweetener, such as honey, sugar or syrup.

Other ingredients that are often added:

* spices, usually "brown" spices such as cinnamon or cloves.
* citrus, such as lemon or orange. Lemonade can be used instead of hot water and citrus; this is a modern variant.
* a little butter.

Hot toddies (such as mulled cider) are traditionally drunk before going to bed, or in wet and cold weather. They were believed to help cure the cold and flu, but the American Lung Association now recommends avoiding treating the common cold with alcoholic beverages as they have no curative effect and cause dehydration.[1]"
