Previously: Ms. Marvel was dating William, despite having fantasies about waking up next to colleague Wonder Man. A bunch of ridiculously convoluted AIM internal politics happened, coupled with some equally fanciful sci-fi stuff involving other dimensions, genetic bombs, and a dying MODOK. In a big three- or four-way brawl, MODOK hypnotized Wonder Man and sicced him on Ms. Marvel.

This time:

Ms. Marvel's public relations consultant, Sandra, meets with William, Ms. Marvel's current squeeze. She hands him a file, which reveals that she knows all about his (unspecified) shady past; he apparently moved across the country, changed his name, dyed his hair, had dental surgery, and wears contact lenses to change the colour of his eyes. Sandra says she won't tell Ms. Marvel, so long as William hightails it out of Carol's life. I originally didn't give William much of a shot vis a vis Simon, but now that he's got a shady past I think his chances are much-improved.

Meanwhile, Carol and Simon duke it out over the skies of Seattle. She first tries reasoning with him, which doesn't work; next, she tries fighting him, but that also seems a losing proposition. He punches her into that Seattle Needle-thing that looks like the CN Tower, and momentarily breaks his brainwashing to say that aggression feeds his conditioning. Taking the hint, Carol opts to use "the opposite of violence", and makes out with him in mid-air.

This does the trick, although they don't stop at first, and he puts his arms around her; eventually, she tells him to stop, and it also leaves them looking somewhat awkward. There are some really hilarious reaction shots from the crowd here. Their kiss is captured by one guy with his camera-phone, and Ed Brubaker has a cameo as another bystander. Carol and Simon both fly off to rejoin the battle.

Agent Locke, the psi-agent (psi-locke?), and Agent Sum are fighting AIM's monsters and beekeeper guys; they've activated a teleportation block to keep anyone from leaving; one of the monsters tackles Sum and they fall out a window, plummeting down many storeys.

MODOK, Sean Madigan, and Monica (the Scientist Supreme) have a three-way standoff over the DNA bomb, which ends when Madigan teleports himself and MODOK away, leaving Monica stunned. Agent Locke calls down some kind of neural blast from a satellite to take out all the other agents, after squabbling over authorization to use that device. The device also incapacitates her. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman finds that Agent Sum survived the fall, and beat the *$#@ out of the monster. They capture Monica as well.

Agent Locke is okay, although she's now grounded by the Helicarrier's onboard physician. Wonder Man and Sum recover the casing to the DNA bomb, but Madigan took the actual contents. Ms. Marvel is annoyed, and goes to interrogate Monica. Simon follows, and asks if they should talk about what happened. She says not now.

Monica says that Madigan's being able to teleport away means that there is a traitor on Ms. Marvel's team (either Locke, Sum, or Baines). Monica then reveals that Madigan is MODOK's son, and that he is planning to shatter AIM, creating hundreds of individual cells that would be much more deadly than the sluggish centralized bureaucracy that currently exists; her pitch, then, is that Ms. Marvel should help her regain control, since they're better off that way. MODOK is dying as a result of physiological problems caused by his transformation, and Madigan is looking to expedite this, placing the DNA bomb inside MODOK's chair, and unleashing him on the city, primed to explode and turn everyone into "circus freaks".

End of issue.

I really like this title. It's not groundbreaking in any notable way, but it tells fun superhero stories with an engaging cast, it's not afraid to use goofy villains like MODOK, and has really, really great art. Lopresti has such an incredible range of facial expressions for his characters (even more than Cho, I think he's the definitive Ms. Marvel artist of the moment).

These issues have been improving a lot. I really liked Wonder Man, MS. Marvel and the characterization of her lightning squad. Although the whole basis of where this story going is a little disappointing. I dont find it too exciting that modok's son is trying to stick the gene bomb i think it is called into his father to go off. Dont really understand his motives here. I am curious to see who Ms. Marvels love interest turns out to be as well to see how far her publicist will go trying to manipulate Carol's life.

For it to matter though you would think this would have to be a villain from ms. marvels past. Someone she knew completely overhauled for the revelation to have any real impact.

she didn't have too many high quality villains; definately none that dental surgery and contacts would disguise. just a thought but maybe Carol is borrowing Mad Dog from Hellcat's rogues gallery. he had fangs and was in the air force, iirc. that would be the connection to Carol. seems unlikely to me though.

she didn't have too many high quality villains;
Not to mention that a couple of the more notable ones were appropriated by their creator for the X-Men (where, strictly speaking, they probably belonged).

Weren't Ms. Marvel and Captain MArvel a couple for a little bit? I find it odd that we havent seen any type of reaction from her in regards to his return.

I remember reading that they were going to bring that up in MA at some point.

Anyway, I can understand Reed wanting to maybe avoid that. Mar-Vel has been dead for so long that I think most people aren't even aware that Ms. Marvel is connected to him (certainly, I wasn't until I read her Wikipedia bio).

Hmm..news to me. I thought originally she was in X-men. Knew nothing of a tie to Mar-vel

I have to say, I am continually surprised that I like this book more and more. At first, I thought it was going to be just kinda of a cheap ripoff of Bendis' Alias, which I liked in the beginning, but I eventually hated his self referential style used in ALL of his books, but I am impressed with the level of maturity in such a superhero book, mixed in with the action and comedy.

The art matches the pacing and dialogue of the book very well and a lot seems to be going into each issue in this arc. As long as this keeps up, I will continue to support this book!! :)

Carol originally appeared as a supporting character in the early issues of Mar-Vell's book. She ended up accidentally getting her powers from him, and started a career as a solo superhero. Then she joined the Avengers. After losing her powers, then she wound up with the X-Men for a while.

I think a lot of people would be suprised how long Ms. Marvel has been around. The fact that she has had like half a dozen different jobs from a magazine editor to being director of homeland security to even being a space pirate is just one indicator of how many different corners of the MU she's been thrown in.

That said, I do wish some kind of connection would be made. Mar-Vell and and Carol have codenames with the same last name... that should be as good a reminder as anyone needs that they had a connection back in the day. And it's not like Marv is doing anything better these days.

Carol Danvers first appears in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in the late 1960's; she is a supporting character in Captain Marvel for some time. Carol is exposed to the forbidden Psyche-Magnitron, a device which can make thoughts reality in Captain Marvel #18. As a result Carol Danvers' mind split into a Kree persona known as Ms. Marvel. However, a second exposure to the Psyche-Magnitron in Ms. Marvel #3-4 gave Carol her Kree-human hybrid DNA & made the superhuman powers innate instead of from her costume. Carol was exposed the Kree Millineum Bloom by the Supreme Intelligence in hoping to turn her into a true Kree warrior & subservient to the Supreme Intelligence; however, the bloom managed to intergrate the Ms. Marvel persona back into the Carol's main personality in Ms. Marvel #19. Carol always had a deep connection with Mar-Vell since her exposure to the Psyche Magnitron. However, all of this was torn from Carol when Rogue stole her psyche & powers permanently in Avengers Annual #10 (including shredding the connection she once had with Mar-Vell). Carol was just left with her Kree-human DNA which is the basis for her to become the cosmic mutate Binary in Uncanny X-Men #164 by the Brood.
