I hope this isn't inappropriate for the board. I've seen postings about sales at buy.com before, so I'm going to plow ahead. Obviously I'm not a shill for this company (I'd like to get an employee discount, though!).

I'm not going to make it a habit to post every time DeepDiscount has a sale, but I did think it was worth pointing out that they now sell books. Anyone who buys a lot of DVDs or CDs is probably familiar with them already. Their prices are good and they always offer free shipping, so they're good for single-item buys. They're currently having one of their infrequent 20% off sales, which offers 20% off the current price (i.e. the current discount price, not the list price). I almost always buy a DVD or two when they have one of these sales, just on principle, but now they cell CDs, books, DVDs and more all under one "roof".

I should warn you that a lot of their "graphic novel" listings are messed up (e.g. six different volumes titled Ultimate Spider-Man: Clone Saga) but if you can find what you're looking for, you might find a bargain. With the 20% off, some volumes are still not much cheaper than on Amazon or InStockTrades.com, but some volumes are very tempting indeed (e.g. Action Heroes Archive Vol 2 for $40.00... has anyone checked this one out yet?).

The keyword for the sale is DVDTALK, it runs through June 16th, and it doesn't apply to pre-orders. It does apply to out-of-stock, in-print items that just need to be re-stocked, as far as I know (their previous sales have).

The details are at http://www.dvdtalk.com and if you sign up for the DVDTalk newsletter (or buy something from DeepDiscount), you should be notified of future sales.

While I've always liked them for DVDs, I had problems when I ordered books from them. Maybe these were just kinks in the system, while they figured out how to deal with books, but I was disappointed. The main problem was incorrect listing of availability.

Hmmm ... Apparently, the order form just doesn't feel like applying the discount code -- or, rather, it processes it as generating a discount of $0.00. I just emailed them telling them that if my order (for LOSH Archives 10 & 11, Showcase Presents: The Flash & a music CD) is processed at full price, I'll be cancelling it.

But their phone support has always been great when I've used them:

800-264-5076. Check the help pages for the hours they're available (e.g. not Sunday night). They should be able to apply the discount or cancel your order over the phone.

Note (in case I didn't point this out earlier) that the discount doesn't apply to pre-orders. It may be that it doesn't apply to books at all (which would be a disappointment), but it didn't mention any restrictions like that on the DVDTalk site.

PS: Please let us know what the customer support people say when you talk to them. I'm waiting until Wednesday to place my order so I can grab the Late Ozu DVD set, and may throw the first Fourth World Omnibus into my order if it's available and I can actually get the discount.

Sure it does.

No books (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=502144)Interesting. Sorry for getting everybody's hopes up.

However, that's not the notice which originally appeared on their home page, (now available at http://www.dvdtalk.com/archives/2007_06.html -- scroll down):

It's time again for DeepDiscount.com's huge 20% off sale. Since the last sale DeepDiscount.com has expanded to include books and music making this legendary sale even better.

That certainly makes it sound like the sale covers everything.

Just got through cancelling my order (except for the CD, since the local Best Buy couldn't be bothered to get the Long Blondes debut in, the useless gits) via phone. Turns out that the recording you hear en route to Customer Service specifies that books & CDs aren't included in the sale.

Can't say I fault Scatchie in the least for assuming otherwise, as the passage he quotes seems pretty clear-cut. *choke*

Hey, after that holiday-season special from Buy.com for using Google checkout, anything seems possible! If only they'd had Legion Archives v10-12 in stock ...

On the plus side, this does save my credit card from undue stress.

Sorry I was the bearer of bad news. As I said above, I didn't have such a good experience with them for books anyway.

Sorry I was the bearer of bad news. As I said above, I didn't have such a good experience with them for books anyway.Yeah, they looked kind of flaky in that regard anyway, what with all the duplicate titles. They've always been a little flaky anyway; they must be a shoestring operation. In any case, it was worth a shot.

20% off and no shipping charge is hard to beat, so I ordered 3 dvds.

Turns out two of the dvds are not in stock so it will be a couple of weeks before they get them and then turn around and send them to me.

This is why I don't buy from dddvd on a regular basis. You don't know until after your order is placed if they have them in stock.

dvdempire shows if an item is in stock or not before you place your order.

Speaking of flaky, I usually order TPBs from www.bamm.com (Books-a-Million). because their (quite cheap) "Millionaire's Club" discount card is applied to online purchases, reducing them a few percentage points below Amazon's prices in most instances, & they offer a once-a-month $5-off coupon off any purchases above $40 that more than offsets the sales tax I pay (they ship from northern Alabama) ...

... but earlier this week, when I was succumbing to the desire to order the Flash volume, their site was showing *choke* no Showcase Presents titles. Nothing under "Showcase Presents," no such volumes under the various characters or titles (Flash, Superman, War That Time Forgot, etc) or authors (Robert Kanigher, Gardner Fox, etc) or artists (Curt Swan, Carmine Infantino ...). Nothing at all, even though I'd ordered several of 'em from them beforehard, & even though they're sure as heck on the brick-&-mortar Books-a-Millions' shelves around here (I was looking through the Flash volume just a few days ago). So I went with Amazon for a 4-book order (the Flash Showcase & Adam Warren's Empowered being the comics-related ones).

Just out of curiosity, inspired somewhat by this thread, I checked just now ... & they're back. All of 'em. Weird. (Not that I regret the Amazon order anyway, since those guys carry The Best of John Keel, one of the books I ordered, & BAMM doesn't.)
