It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I don't think she was really in love. Don't get me wrong, there was definite sexual tension but I don't think there was any real love going on.

sum say Mamimi never really loved naota, she loved his brother and used naota as a replacement and This explains why she didnt let naota kiss her
but i dont see it like thet it looks to me like Mamimi metaphorically confesses to Naota that she likes him more than his older brother and she loves him but maybe its just me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm1L1ngiKzQ

I've only watched the first 3 OVAs, but I bought the whole 6 episodes, and I might be watching the final ones tonight.
So far, Mamimi is my favorite character, but I wouldn't dare to say she's really in love with Naota. She might be in love with the idea she is in love, but it's hard to say with her. Boy, she is eccentric and hard to 'read' as a character.

Mamimi is not "in love" with Naota, not in an actual sense. She was in love with his brother ("Ta-kun"), and when his brother moved away she became fixated on Naota as a surrogate, including dubbing him "Ta-kun" as well. When Naota briefly disappeared with Haruko, Mamimi found another to latch onto, once again transferring the name.
To me, it seemed a device to show that Mamimi is trying to remain at that particular point in her life, rather than moving on.
On a side-note, the "Ta-kun" nickname is a little odd to me, since most of the Japanese nicknames I see are based off the first few syllables of the name, rather than the last, so the nickname did not really sit right on Naota (which you see in episode 5).

Wasn't Naota's brother named Tasuke, though? So the original "Ta-kun" nickname makes sense, she just carries it over (along with her fixation).
Mamimi is pretty screwed up on multiple levels. It's suggested that she's actually homeless, or near to, and of course there's the whole pyromania thing.

That's pretty much it.
I never really liked Mamimi. She was far too... crazy.
Haruko, at least, was crazy in a fun way. But I do like Naota best; especially towards the end where he starts getting more backbone. (Though, I never did get the whole bizarre thing with the fake wasabi eyebrows.)

the eyebrows serve the dual purpose of making him look macho and protecting him from the N.O. and i still think Mamimi loved Naota.

I dont understand why so many people can think this anime is classic or real good.

Well, the animation is quite interesting. It's an OVA by Gainax, so it has that heritage go it.
Plus there's just the plain WTF factor. I honestly took a couple of viewings of the first couple of eps to even liken it. Of course this was back in the fansub days. This was one of the first digital fansubs I ever saw. A friend gave it to me and I had no clue what ot make of it.
You also have the amazing music from then obscure Japanese rock group The Pillows. I love this show for introducing me ot them alone.
Also, the sexual overtones make this an.. interesting anime to show on a date. And.. that's all I'm saying about that.

Can't speak for anyone else, but believe it or not, I like all the crazy symbolism. In fact, I wrote a paper for a college Aesthetics class analysing FLCL as a "coming-of-age" story.
But yeah, the show's kind of an acquired taste. You might have to watch it two or three times before you even start to "get" it.

I think i can understand why some people don't like FLCL, it's kinda ... out there... That's one thing i like about it. The way the symbolisim is entangled with the screwy plot, it make for a decent series that i wish could have been longer. I think though if they had made it any longer than the set 6 ep. it would have ruined the end result of the Anime.
AndyAnime-How did that paper work out? That sounds like it would have been interesting.
random question---some thing i should know but don't, what does OVA mean?

The symbolism is pretty easy when you realise that most everything in the film is usually related in some way to sex, male puberty, and the bizarre transition in a boy's brain that occurs as he grows a pair.

I think I like episodes 04 and 06 the best. Wikipedia gives a pretty good rundown of the whole thing and explains most of the high points.
