Okay, this isn't the most original concept. I mean, Ghost Dog has already done the urban/Hip-Hop samurai thing. And, yes, the construction of Afro Samurai feels awfully familiar if you've already seen Ninja Scroll. But, this truly is an entertaining short series/film. I missed it on Spike so my initial exposure was picking up the DVD set... I wasn't disappointed.
Thoughts?

I picked up Afro at best buy as soon as I could, even got a keychain with a #2 band and a little metal picture of Afro on it. This series is awsome, epic and sweeping. What they should have done from the DVD since its only a couple of hours long (the Directors cut is 125 and worth it for the extras) just go ahead and stream line the episodes into a big movie. Or they could still do that put some more finishing touches on it and realese it on the big screen, lets just cross our fingers and pray Afro gets the respect he deserves.
Also Ive seen "ghost dog" on satalite, and Trying to compare Afro to that mess is like comparing, lets put this in anime terms, pokemon, to DragonBallZ

I just bought this yesterday & I'm watching it right now.
I love the way the box is designed with all the artwork.
The way the DVDs stay in is even new and innovative.
This is definitely in my Top 5 all time.

Is it a five episode mini or are there more episodes on the way?

To the best of my understanding, the five-episode mini is it (and it does wrap up fairly well).
If the ratings and DVD sales are there, anything is possible, but this series was pretty expensive to make, on top of everything else. We still have the live-action movie to look forward to, though, also starring Sam Jackson, and depending on how that's done it could be incredibly cool (it could also plumb new levels of suck, we'll just have to wait and see).

I thought the concept was good, but it felt too urban.Like it was shouting "this is black".

heheheh, well, that didn't bug me... because the whole idea of a "black samurai" screams out "THIS IS BLACK!... YEAH, BRUTHA!!!" so, I enjoyed the "urban" aspect of it. heck, when Jinno shows up I literally thought, "hey, its the Kanye West Samurai!" :D
that was definitely my favorite part... I found myself rooting for both of the characters, and it made their fight more enjoyable. honestly, with those two dudes the happiest ending I can think of for them would be for both of them to kill each other. dying honorably in battle with a worthy opponent is about as good as they'll get.

I'm glad to see people are into it.
I guess this was a test to kinda continue to build the road started with Alexander, Animatrix and Dead Leaves. I don't think there are any plans for more animated Afro Samurai, though. The live action version is said to be more than just a rumor.
I don't know about the comparison with Ghost Dog. Ghost Dog is a serious urban samurai film... the philosophy in it are anything but tame. Ghost Dog and Afro Samurai are two completely different films... the approach... the thoughts that went into making them, etc. I'm sure many copies of Hagakure were sold as a result of the way they exhibited bushido in Ghost Dog.
I got both versions of the DVD. The Spike version is very much inferior. And, yeah, the way they put together the Uncut version is pure class.

I'm going to buy this on DVD. I wonder though, what are the differences between the Spike TV verison and the Director's Cut?

Directors cut has 15 minutes added footage, some footage helps the story and explains part, plus it doesnt cut the use of the words "f*ck" and "motherf*cker " used by Ninja Ninja. Plus you get to see boobies!
