If you haven't watched this movie, then stop watching what you're watching--I don't care if it's Neon Genesis Evangelion--and buy this damn film.
The television series is also worth a watch, but it's not as good. Regardless, Jubei Kibagami is the equivalent of Batman, in that he has to fight some of the best and most original villains you'll ever see.
Great soundtrack, too.

Wow... what a coincidence. I recently felt nostalgic and watched this film again... it hasn't lost a thing over the 12 years since its original release.

Quality flick. In my top ten.

The only sad thing is that even it's creator hasn't been able to top himself.

Is the Wildstorm Ninja Scroll comic any good?
Easily my favorite anime ever. Want a sequel. Come on Kawajiri! Nice ending theme song though.

There is a sequel in production and it will have the same director. However it's not by any means on the fast track because the director, according to his own admission, can only do one film every five years and he just finished Highlander the Search for Vengeance.
On the plus side there was a series, and while it's very different from the anime, it's very good but on the short side as they only made 13 episodes ala Hellsing.
Whatever you do though avoid Ninja Resurrection. IT IS IN NO WAY CONNECTED TO NINJA SCROLL IT ONLY PRETENDS TO BE.

Ninja Resurrection is AIDS.
The series really sucks for the first two episodes, but then it gains momentum. There are actually some really cool villains to be seen, and hey, that's one of the biggest selling points of Ninja Scroll.

One film every five years? Dang, that's hecka long. Hopefully I'll be alive by then to see the sequel.
I've only watched the first volume of the TV series. Not as good as the film of course but it's watchable. Need to pick up the slack and watch the rest already.
As for Ressurrection? Too late. I was pretty much a victim to AD Vision's promo. They should be ashamed to promote that as Scroll related. They even used similar fonts for the title on the video packaging. Only thing similar is the first name of the lead characters. Thank goodness it was never finished.

Ninja Scroll was the very first anime I saw, and still one of my favorites. The only other series that could even do Ninja Scroll justice would have to be Basilisk which its characters that wield just as unique powers and a technique that would stomp the Sharingan into the ground.
As for the Ninja Scroll series itself, I thought it was pretty good, though it somewhat lessened how impressive Jubei was by making his long distance attack he used only one time in the OVA a recurring technique.
Speaking of Basilisk, I need to catch up on that as well. Forgot about that one. Excellent animation though.

Yes, but if you look at his list most of his movies are worth the wait.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll are a few of the movies that he's written and directed. And while he only directs every five years he's written and planned a lot of cool stuff like Biohunters and Birdy the Mighty.
He even did the impossible and made a good Highlander animated film, although his version was severely edited. A much longer Japanese cut will be released later this year.
If it makes you feel better a lot of people, myself included, fell for the Ninja Resurrection scam.

Yep, read about that longer Kawajiri version of Highlander. I'm really picking that one up.
Birdy the Mighty was a fun watch. Bloodlust was an excellent film. Love the dark atmosphere of Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. Biohunter while decent is the only Kawajiri anime I didn't find spectacular. X the film was eye candy and I was pretty much lost cause I didn't know jack about the manga at the time. But the TV series was good and I have still yet to check out the manga. lol. I recommend Cyber City Oedo 808 though. I found the idea to be fascinating. It's too bad they did't come out more of that or make a film of it. The characters were quite interesting. Plus, it was released back in '89/'90 and still holds up well like Wicked City and Shinjuku. In fact, that can be said for all Kawajiri properties.
And I agree about that Highlander comment. I was introduce to Highlander with the TV series. Watched all the films and never cared for them. So I guess you can say that Vengeance is my favorite Highlander film to date.

Kawajiri wrote the script for the X film, but he didn't direct it. And you could tell. That movie had horrible animation and direction. One of the worst movies I've ever tried watching.
What made Bloodlust so great was that it stayed true to the original and even surpassed it.

Jubei used it in the opening scene, against the rock guy a couple of times, against the falling snakes, against the wasp nest guy, and against the guy who stayed in the shadows. So he used it quite frequently in the film (I may have missed one or two instances).

After watching the movie again just to check, I have to admit, you're definately right, my apologies.

Is the Wildstorm Ninja Scroll comic any good?
I've been wondering the same.......Is the Wildstorm comic any good? Anyone here read it?
I definitely liked what Top Cow did with Battle of the Planets a few years ago, and was hoping to hear similar things about Wildstorm's rendition of Ninja Scroll.

I believe that both Baslisk and Ninja Scroll are based upon the same novel, called The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, written in 1959.
Hence the reason both have a variety of bizarre ninja superpowers and share a variety of elements. For my money, Basilisk IS the companion series to Ninja Scroll.

I knew it wasn't coincidental that Basilisk was incredibly similar to Ninja Scroll.
