Welcome to the runway!

Jesse Newcomb, as you did not submit a design for this challenge you are automatically eliminated. However, there will still be an elimination this round.

PLEASE VOTE for the entry you feel best completes the challenge. Voting should not be based solely on art ability. Participants may vote for themselves. The designer with the least amount of votes may be eliminated.

CHALLENGE 8: PEDAL TO THE METAL

For your eighth challenge you will create your own original member of DC's Metal Men (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Men). Like the Metal Men (Gold, Iron, Lead, Tin, Mercury Platinum, and Copper), your character will be a shapeshifter, but he or she must reflect the traits of their namesake metal, both in personality and in substance. No alloys are to be used.

In addition to the standard requirements of the written description, you must include a short description explaining who your character is and how his/her personality and "powers" reflect the traits of the chosen metal.
Please vote using the poll, then feel free to make comments or ask questions about this challenge or these designs within this thread.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w30/ZacharyLovesYou/nickelsmall.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/mattbib/My%20Drawings/Project%20CBRunway/nickel.jpg

Properties:
Nickel is a silvery white metal that takes on a high polish. It belongs to the transition metals, and is hard and ductile. It is magnetic, and is very frequently accompanied by cobalt, both being found in meteoric iron. It is chiefly valuable for the alloys it forms, especially many superalloys, and particularly stainless steel. Nickel is used in many industrial and consumer products, including stainless steel, magnets, coinage, and special alloys. It is also used for plating and as a green tint in glass. Nickel is pre-eminently an alloy metal, and its chief use is in the nickel steels and nickel cast irons, of which there are innumerable varieties. It is also widely used for many other alloys, such as nickel brasses and bronzes, and alloys with copper, chromium, aluminum, lead, cobalt, silver, and gold.

Powers and personality:
Nickel is the epitome of a team player. He selflessly uses all of his abilities for the team’s benefit, and he does it with a shiny smile. He is also very proud of his flawlessly crafted jaw and imposing physique- you can often find him posing in stances that show off the ingenuity he was built with. His two main powers he contributes to the team are: His tremendous strength and density that he can either use for himself or gladly transfer to any of his teammates for some added muscle to any of their established strength, and his skills as a master of magnetism; able to draw or repel the metals of fellow Metal Men or foe. He obviously has enough power himself to complete many tasks, but he tries to accomplish everything with group effort.

The Design:
I wanted to make sure to keep the continuous look of the Silver Age Metal Men. At first glance, they all seem to look like differently colored versions of themselves but upon closer inspection, you can see their different personalities and physical traits. Keeping this in mind, I made sure to keep all of the rivets and bolts theme, but adding some gears and openings to make Nickel appear to be a slightly newer model. He doesn’t have the standard metal skirt/tunic look, and he is severed at the joints instead of having streamlined limbs that make him look like a gray-painted man. Unfortunately, Nickel doesn’t have a cool symbol for his chest like some of the other metals; all he gets is the “Ni”. And since Nickel is combined with a lot of other metals, I wanted to give him a really cheerful, welcoming face and personality that made him look like he’d be a great teammate/give an emphasis on his group-based abilities.

Each of the Metal Men brings some new properties and powers to the group, and Magnesium has the power to flare with a brilliant white light! She has a visor which protects her eyesight while glowing, and she has retractable gauntlets on her wrists that allow her to either focus her light like a flashlight (when the gauntlets are extended) or all around her when they are withdrawn. In fact, should she need to, she can cause her entire body to glow brilliantly, but this is very taxing on her, since small pieces of her body being consumed to produce her light. The more light she creates, the more is consumed.

This design, with it's modern appearance, such as the visor and her platform shoes (which she absorbs and uses to repair her hands as she creates light, causing the soles to get lower and lower) and lack of a molecular symbol show that Magnesium is clearly from the newest incarnation of the Metal Men, not their classic look.

Personality: Magnesium is quick-witted and bright intellectually, but is very impulsive and has a relatively short attention span for boring tasks. She has a fiery temper, but luckily it tends to pass quickly as well. She can be something of a flirt, but she doesn't focus on any one person for very long (though it annoys Platinum when her attention turns to Dr. Magnus).

Properties of Magnesium: Elemental magnesium is a fairly strong, silvery-white, light-weight metal (two thirds the density of aluminium). It tarnishes slightly when exposed to air, although unlike the alkaline metals, storage in an oxygen free environment is unnecessary because magnesium is protected by a thin layer of oxide which is fairly impermeable and hard to remove. Like its lower periodic table group neighbor calcium, magnesium reacts with water at room temperature, though it reacts much more slowly than calcium. When it is submerged in water hydrogen bubbles will almost unnoticeably begin to form on the surface of the metal, though if powdered it will react much more rapidly. Magnesium also reacts with hydrochloric acid and produces heat and hydrogen when added to it. The magnesium will begin to bubble and become hot, too hot to touch comfortably. The reaction will occur faster with higher temperatures (see precautions). Magnesium is a highly flammable metal, but while it is easy to ignite when powdered or shaved into thin strips, it is difficult to ignite in mass or bulk. Once ignited it is difficult to extinguish, being able to burn in both nitrogen (forming magnesium nitride), and carbon dioxide (forming magnesium oxide and carbon).

Magnesium, when it burns in air, produces a brilliant white light. This was used in the early days of photography when magnesium powder was used as a source of illumination (flash powder). Later, magnesium ribbon was used in electrically ignited flash bulbs. Magnesium powder is still used in the manufacture of fireworks and marine flares where a brilliant white light is required. Magnesium, when glowing white, has many chemical properties that it does not possess at lower temperatures. It also becomes more toxic, although this is of little practical importance, because the high temperature alone generally prevents human contact.

Cobalt

Info
Cobalt is a transition metal, atomic number 27. It is a magnetic metal with a silver-gray appearance. Cobalt, when an ion in solution, appears blue, and so, it is used in the production of paint to create the cobalt blue pigment. Cobalt is used as a cancer-treatment agent as it has radioactive properties as the isotope Cobalt-60. It has a high melting point of 1768 K (about 2723 degrees Fahrenheit). It is also very wear-resistant and used in many different alloys.

The name "cobalt" comes from the word "kobold" which is a spirit, or goblin.

The Character
Cobalt is a mischievous fellow. Since his name refers to goblins and other such creatures, Cobalt likes to play tricks on any unsuspecting persons. He is a sly one, always seeming to move quickly enough to evade being noticed when he's playing a trick. However, when someone ruins his fun he tends to fume and get angry. He also loves to make a good joke and never seems to stop laughing at everything around him. Cobalt is also quiet intelligent, which is reflected in how clever he is.

Cobalt, like all the other metal men, has his own unique abilities. He can control magnetism, able to attract and repel metals. He also is able to create a radioactive aura around himself to ward opponents off of him.

Inspiration
Since cobalt makes such a beautiful blue, I had to make Cobalt cobalt blue. At first I thought he should be a silver-gray, but after realizing that Mercury was red (despite the element being silver), I quickly changed him to cobalt blue. Also, I felt I could play off of his name and what it came from to influence his personality (trickster) and appearance (pointed ears, mischievous grin, small, skinny figure).
Also, most of the Metal Men had symbols associated with them and each symbol represented the metal they were composed of. Since cobalt doesn't have an alchemical symbol, I created my own, which is a combination of the symbols for the constellation of Leo and Pluto, as Leo is associated with decomposition through digestion (which cobalt is a part of due to being the central atom of vitamin B12) and Pluto was not associated with any metals.

Titanium

Ore properties: Titanium is one of the strongest metals. It bears similarities to steel but is much lighter. Titanium is corrosive-resistent and often alloyed to create lightweight yet strong materials used in aeronautic designs and prostheses. 95% of titanium ends up in the form of titanium dioxide, a permanent pigment used in paint, paper toothpaste and plastics.

The character: Titanium is the largest of the Metal Men even when he's not shapeshifting yet his weight is not in proportion to his size. As all Metal Men Titanium is a shapeshifter but in his case he primarily uses it to increase his size. When Titanium grows he does not however increase in mass and remains at his normal weight. Titanium, like the ore that he shares his name with, is very resistent to corrosives capable of withstanding attacks by acids, moist chlorine gas, and common salt solutions although concentrated acids can harm him. His hide is tough as steel and he can withstand temperatures of up to 610 degrees celcius. Titanium's greatest weakness is that he can catch fire if exposed to liquid oxygen.

As a member of the team Titanium often acts as a tough guy, unafraid to jump in the line of fire when his team mates are in danger. At times his macho attitude annoys his team mates. He likes great heights whether by growing in size or climbing and can spend days on top of a mountain just enjoying the view. He has a soft spot for Platinum but he is tightlipped about his feelings for her.

Design: in designing Titanium I went for a bulky character as its name is derived from the greek titans. While titanium is grey to white metallic I used the minutest blue because of its association with steel which titanium bears similarities to. Using an extreme perspective underlines his size. Titanium, when used for jewelry, is most often used matte rather than shiney and so i didn't make the character too shiney.

ZacharyLovesYou's NICKEL : Aw. He looks kinda goofy lol. It's all a bit generic though, very colossus.

Samurai's MAGNESIUM: Hm I think Magnesium had a lot of petential and you kindof grabbed me witht he light powers, but I think more could've been done. She could've been explosive and light flareing and all kinda of cool stuff. And again, the visual is a bit bland.

AnkaleRa's Cobalt: I actually love this. It's totally unexpected but totally works. I also love that you made a symbol.

Pro's TITANIUM: Haha! A stong-guy who looks totally AWESOME and yet different! I think Titanium was a really hard one and you nailed it.

It's almost a tie between AnakleRa and Pro, but I'm giving it to Pro because I wanna hug titanium. :|

I have to go for Cobalt. Good look and interesting powerset.

Magnesium was a close second, again thanks to the powerset, but in the end I just liked the Cobalt design better.

Titianium and Nickle felt a little too much like existing MM designs.

She is light flaring. The first line even says she "has the power to flare with a brilliant white light". She can have a steady burn to give off constant light, or a quick burn like flash powder to blind opponents. Magnesium isn't very explosive, so I didn't give her any explosive powers, but she can create a variety of light effects to dazzle and blind enemies, or provide illumination. She has all the properties of magnesium.

All these designs are straight-up Metal Men. Nobody was visually off if you ask me, and that's been a first for this contest. Congrats to all of you for that.

Nickel is a little too straight-up though. He's got the beginning of a good Metal Man eccentric personality, but it doesn't quite bleed through. Still, I do like what you've done.

Magnesium . . .I love the "flares" on her "clothes." Great visual pun. Her powers and personality both work well too. Her look might be a little dated . . .this could have been a weird entry to the Dazzler contest.

Cobalt . . .it took me a second to understand his stuff . . .he's got a nicely formed personality. He looks like a meaner Tin . . .which means you've got the idea but I'm not sure if it completely stands out.

Titanium feels the fullest to me. Like Cobalt, he's got a great, fleshed out personality. But he also has the most unique look I've seen. Great idea. Wins this competition for me.

Very well done, guys. There isn't a single entry that is off-the-mark for this challenge. Overall I liked all the entries and none really stood out from the others.

So, in order to decide which one to vote for, I looked to what the individual character would add (or not add) to the Metal Men as a group.

Titanium doesn't seem to add a role that hasn't already been taken by Lead or Iron.

Nickel, again, feels like he's filling in the steady but strong role of Iron.

Physically, Cobalt seems very close to Tin. But his personality is very different. It does seem to stray into the territory of Mercury's personality, but not with the trickster aspect. Nicely done.

Magnesium is interesting. I like the powers and they are enough different than any existing Metal Man to make her useful in her own right. I think her personality is a bit close to Platinum, but not enough so that she wouldn't be a decent contrast.

It's between Cobalt and Magnesium. I'll decide then vote.

But very good job, everyone.

I thought all of these were outstanding and if ever there were to be a "non-elimination" round I would wish this were it because choosing was tough!

I really did enjoy all of them but it came down to Cobalt and Titanium and in the end I had to go with Titanium. Just jumped out at me more.

it was a tough choice between Nickel and Titanium.

both could be (and should be) new characters in the Metal Men Mini.

Went with Nickel for the silver agey jaw.

Jack Flash

great stuff folks.

I am liking two of them a bit more than the other two.

Nickel is great and I love his hip joints and jaw, but he doesn't pop to me like some of Zach's other work has. Maybe it's the pose. It obscures his breast plate, which I think really could have sold me on the outfit.

Magnesium is shiny! The shine flares are actually a little distracting to me, but I love her hair and her shoes. Her sleeves seem a bit off to me, but overall it was a good showing, just not a homerun for me.

Cobalt is freaking fantastic. I love this design more than any of your previous stuff Ankale. You really stepped it up for this round. I am amazed at how much personality you infused into him. really awesome stuff.

Titanium is so wonderful! Full of life and hilarity. His expression is priceless. I really dig the head shape. I love the write up. He looks and feels like a unique character that would perfectly mesh with the rest of hte Metal crew.

so I am a bit torn between Cobalt and Titanium. I'll make up my mind later, but fantastic job to all folks.

Damn guys, you all've done a great job ths round. Kudos to all.

If I had stuck in the game, I woulda done Chromium, which was named after the Greek word "chroma" meaning color, because of the many colorful compounds made from it, so I was thinking of applying a "colorful" personality to her in a teen form. Unfortunately, I've had a very rough week since this round started, so I havent' even found the time to start on her yet. :( I'll see if I can find the time this weekend, if I don't get caught up in the next round's design ;)

Now for my first critique of the competition (now that I feel it's fair to give one, having been eliminated):

ZacharyLovesYou's NICKEL : Nicely done. Design-wise, he looks like he'd easily fit in with the rest of the team. You displayed his personality very well in the design.

Samurai's MAGNESIUM: Was one of the elements I woulda considered for myself to do but also my least favorite of this batch of designs, only because color-wise she's very similiar to Platinum, which I think would cause actual confusion problems to the reader viewing her within a comic book if she were added to the team (which is an issue to me with my Chromium concept as well). May have been more worthwhile to have made her a "him" with Magnesium. Didn't like the visor for some reason....haven't been able to put my finger on that one. However, that said, I love love LOVE the flashlight arm idea. Very original and very fitting to making this design unique. That alone to me would make her a worthwhile member to add to their team.

AnkaleRa's COBALT: Very well thought-out concept-wise. High marks on the personality aspect. Smart thinking on the goblin ears and smart thinking on the character's color, which dynamically would work best of all 4 of these designs (Yes, Iron's also blue, but he's a different blue - plus size-wise there's enough to distinguish the 2 characters apart)

Pro's TITANIUM: Beautiful work Pro. I think you hit it dead on this round. It's the differing physical form/facial features that not only make him different enough from the rest of the Metal Men, but also matches up with the personality you've given him. He looks like he would fit in perfectly. The only problem I could see maybe is the color scheme being a little similiar to Lead's (which may cause the same problem I outlined with Magnesium). To me, this is the best design to come from you this competition.

I should be voting for Pro this round, but I haven't fully decided yet because everyone did a good job (plus Pro's already kicking butt this round). I'll wait a little longer to decide on my vote.

I tried to make her fairly different in appearance, personality, and powers from Platinum. I think the light powers, visor, focusing sleeves, hair style, platform shoes, and short-tempered and impulsive nature are enough to differentiate her from Platinum. I tried to make her look a bit younger and shorter as well, compared to the tall, statuesque Platinum. In the end, a great many metals are silvery grey in color, and it left me with the choice of changing the color from the actual color of the metal (which made sense for Cobalt, but not Magnesium, IMO) or trusting that everything else put together would be enough that readers could readily tell them apart.

These were all excellent, and DC should be paying attention. Very well thought out by all contestants, great job.

I was so torn on who to choose, but ultimately I went with Samurai's Magnesium. I think it's cool to see another girl, and the light powers were nicely implemented.

Nickel was great as a retro Metal Man.

Cobalt really captured the spirit of the group.

Titanium was just awesome, and my second choice.

Great job all around, congrats to all.

This is the first REALLY hard decision as all entries are completely appropriate, well-considered and pretty damn well done.

Nickel is gorgeous. I like the idea of the guy who doesn't excel at anything but helping out the crew. Gorgeously rendered, too, with a lot of REAL character. You've drawn him so gosh-darned likeable-looking. And being likeable and having character is a big part of the Metal Men.

Magnesium is nifty. I can see her as a slightly more bubbly, less vampish character than Platinum. Kinda the hyper kid sister-type. I imagine a story featuring her would end when the team realizes that fighting Chemo is one thing, but keeping up with a hyperactive teenage robot is EXHAUSTING!

Cobalt was a neat take on the character. Really not what I was expecting. I could see him appearing in a Metal Men story as a new character who starts out well, but becomes a bad influence on poor ol' Tin, picking on Lead... that sort of thing. One of those stories that ends with a line like "Yeah, we occasionally play jokes on each other, but your jokes aren't funny. Just mean!"

Titanium is great. Fantastic character and personality, and a great use of texture. I imagine him as a kind of gentle giant, who enjoys using his tremendous strength to help his friends but is always scared of hurting people with it.

I'm really torn between Nickel and Titanium here.

I'll probably go with Titanium just because he's a bit more distinct in appearance and role to Nickel. I'd love to have seen a symbol on his chest or headpiece, though.

I like Cobalt & Magnesium best - I like the Cobalt's look reflects the origins of the word Cobalt/Kobold, as explained by AnkaleRa. but I like the way Magnesium adds a different, beneficial power to the Metal Men. I'm not sure what Cobalt would bring to the team when they're adventuring.

Oh wow! The final four already! And everyone's entry is pretty good this round!

ZacharyLovesYou: Nickel could definitely be an addition to the Metal Men, but I don't think you made him distinguishable enough from the rest of them. His appearance reminds me of gold a bit much.

Samuari: I love your idea for Magnesium! Her powers and personality are perfect! I just feel her design is a bit off. It's clever, but like some said earlier, it seems more like a crazy design for someone like Dazzler.

AnkaleRa: I think you nailed this one with Cobalt! He is definitely distinguishable, mostly by his color and demeanor. Also I like the powers you gave him and the personality. They fit well! And I also love how you implemented the meaning of his name into his design. Only problem I see is that he seems a bit too detailed and his appearance does somewhat resemble a mix of Tin and Mercury.

Pro: Oh wow! You definitely nailed this one too! Your design for Titanium is magnificent! His powers, his personality, everything! Kudos to you Pro!

So, overall I definitely am torn between Titanium and Cobalt. And I would place my vote with Pro, but he seems to be well enough ahead to let me place it with AnakleRa instead.

Great Job everyone, and I can't wait to see the Fashion Week results!

I can totally see where you're coming from. Like I said, I found the same issues with my Chromium concept. I don't feel your Magensium came off looking younger and smaller, maybe because there's no Platinum in the image to compare her with in order to show off that factor (not that you should need to do that). Overall, it's a tricky execution to pull off, but I still liked some of the character concepts.

These are all awesome designs, and character concepts. They'd all make welcome additions to the Metal Men (or maybe a Legion of Substitute Metals!). Lots of fun potential.

ZacharyLovesYou: Nickel is a good design, and fits in perfectly with the original team, but brings the least originality to the group. He basically plays off of the personalities around him; in addition, he looks very similar to Iron and Gold, the two "straightest" Metal Men. And, overall, the concepts and designs for the others were stronger. Still, good work.

Samurai: Ah, another female Metal Man. I almost immediately started calling Magnesium "Maggie" in my brain; no idea what that says about me. Anyway, this is one of my favorite designs of yours from the competition. Like the best Metal Man designs, it takes a property of its metal and runs with it, expanding out to a full and rich character. The visual aspects give her a "party girl" feel, which I like.

AnkeleRa: I like the idea of Cobalt very much. One archetype the Metal Men don't have is the trickster, and it'd be fun to see his personality play off of Tin's. The blue color scheme is, of course, a given, and I like the sharp angles and the hunch you've put into him. Magnetic powers is an interesting trick, and one I'm sure would plague Iron, another Metal Man he makes a good contrast with.

Pro: Titanium reminds me of the Rock Eater from "The Never Ending Story," a straight-up "gentle giant" archetype. He, like Nickel, has strong overtones of original Metal Men, but manages to stand out, largely due to his unique design. He seems like a fun character to base a "day in the life" story around.

After a tough deliberation, I'm going with Cobalt. I just like him.

All of these characters should be in the Metal Men. I voted for Magnesium, because I thought there was a unique personality and power that wasn't accounted for already in the Metal Men. That's not to say I didn't like or love the others. If I could've voted four times more I would've. Each entry was excellent. You guys are the best. :)

Hello. Welcome to the Runway! As you know, in fashion and in comic books, one day you're in and the next you're out.

Samurai, voters thought your design was fun and fitting of the name. They thought you took "magnesium" and ran with it. While a few thought it was dated or didn't feel right, overall voters really enjoyed your design. You are in.

Pro, your design is brilliant. So full of life and character, even without the write-up. Voters absolutely loved your design, even if some thought the character's purpose was already fulfilled by other Metal Men. Pro...Congratulations! You are the winner of this challenge.

AnkaleRa, some voters thought this was your best work during this season of CBRunway. Most thought you nailed the character, both in personality and design, and could see Cobalt as a member of the group, however some thought he resemled Tin too closely. You are in.

ZacharyLovesYou, voters thought you really showed the character's personality in the design and that he fit perfectly in the classic Metal Men. Unfortunately, they also thought your design showed the least originality, and that it just didn't stand out as much. Still a nice design. ZacharyLovesYou....

You are out. Auf wiedersehen.

All of these characters should be in the Metal Men.I have to agree. Love to see a jam piece with all 4 of them as a team.

Aw. Zach, you were awesome and consistent throughout, and you're a very talented artist. It feels like when Melinda got kicked off. ;_; finny sad.
