i used to draw alot before but i gave up on it in 1999. im considering going back but im gonna be REALLY rusty.

what i wanted to know is, do you ever start to hate your own work and dont think it will ever get accepted?

people used to tell me i was really talented but i hated it and felt i could be much better

There is a rarely a drawing i'm truly satisfied about 100% even though i get plenty of compliments and deep down i know i'm pretty decent as an artist. I'm a perfectionist and so it's hard being totally satisfied with my own work because i always feel i could have done more, better.

However i'm trying to teach myself that at some point getting a artpiece finished is just as important as getting it perfect. Generally you develop your drawing skill faster through making a lot of drawings that might not always be perfect than by slaving over the same thing for weeks on end and still being left unsatisfied with the end result.

My opinion is, If you ever love your own work to the point that it looks flawless to you, then it's probably time to put down the pencil.

What I basically mean is that it's the artist's job to not love his work (most of the time anyway). That way he'll always try harder to make his work better and better.

That said, there are things I draw myself that I often don't like or even outright hate. But the point is to work on those things that I hate to make them more visually appealing.

That's how I see it anyhow.

Go ahead and give it a shot again. I don't think most artists are ever truly 100% happy with the way their work ends up. For most artists the vision they had in their head doesn't alwaays end up on the paper. Not being totally happy with your work isn't a bad thing. It just means you see flaws that need to be fixed. As long as you know what those flaws are and work on making it better next time you're doing just fine.

Of course you will get compliments from others but you should be your harshest critic. I think the artists who just take compliments from others as a sign of their work being good enough will never grow or get any better because it really doesn't take a whole lot to get a compliment from someone.

Just start drawing and figure out what parts of your art you don't like and make the effort to work on those areas one at a time. Look at real life reference, look at how other artists tackle that problem (not just one artist or one style but as many as possible), and do it over and over until you feel you see some improvement.

Good Luck.
