I purchased a Flash Gorden picture that is a frame taken from a comic book. I was wondering if anyone knew which specific comic book it was from? I would like to have the original comic to frame next to the picture. I have added a picture. Cool forum!

It kind of looks like Alex Raymond, but I'm not sure of that.
Is this panel a piece of original art, or is it a panel cut out from a published comic book? (And if the latter is the case, then might I ask why anyone would pay good money for such a thing?)

Looks like Alex Raymond to me, too. From a Sunday strip. Checker Books has issued the complete Alex Raymond Flash Gordon newspaper strips in several volumes. Their website gives you sample pages from each volume. A quick glance there suggests that what you are looking at is a panel from a Sunday strip published between 1938-40. Note the lack of word balloons in your panel, a technique Raymond adopted (a la Prince Valiant) after the first few years.
Flash and Ming's garb is identical to that shown in your panel in this sample page from Volume 4:

Good luck!
