View Full Version : OT:Happy 30th Star Wars...memories anyone?
It's all over the news today, especially if you live here in L.A. Star Wars celebrates it's 30th anniversary. I'm dating myself, but...I was one of the many or few, that saw the movie when it had it first run back in 1977.Other than changing sci-fi movies or dare i say the movie industry,it solidified the "geek" that i would become:D .I also remember this date because 30 years ago ,I met my two buddies...who are still my best friends today.Today,I guess the legacy continues...my son loves Star Wars as much ,if not more than I do.Anyway,if there is anyone as old as I am:rolleyes: or more than likely...younger!Any memories?

I'm an old fart too and I saw it during 1977. I loved it then, I love parts of it now, but Lucas should have either stopped at 3, or turned the reins over to someone like Frank Darabont or another creative mind.
30 years...so what.
I saw Jaws when it originally ran too...

I was seven years old when I first saw Star Wars at the drive-ins in 1977. There ever-after I was hooked ! Loved it all ! Now I have passed on the legacy to my son who is 4 1/2. He saw Episode III in the theatres with me at age three and sat through the two plus hours cuz he loves...none other than...Darth Vader !
Thanks George Lucas for the thrill-ride ! Let the nay-sayers all sit down and be silent until they are able to create the mythology that you have for generations to enjoy!

I'm a youngin' myself (19), but I grew up with Star Wars. I watched them all the time and when the Special Editions came out, and all the media tie-in's that came with it, I was in my little 8-year-old heaven. Books, toys, seeing 'em all in the theater. Thats was a great time for me... of course, nowadays I prefer the uncut originals. I got the "limited edition" releases of the trilogy only a few weeks ago. Really loved seeing them again.
Happy 30th, I don't care for the new stuff but George; if you want to make one of your Star Wars TV Show episodes revolve around Admiral Ackbar, I'll be there,

Saw the movie in cinemas back in '77, and remember how awe-struck I was. The 70s in general didn't do a lot for me movie-wise, being a huge fan of older films, and along came STAR WARS and gave me hope that at last films were becoming entertaining and adventuresome again. I had the same feeling when I saw RAIDERS on the day it was released, too. Ah ... golden days ...

I remember seeing the ad for Star Wars on tv and my mom saying "That looks STUPID" (she hates sci-fi and fantasy movies). My dad glanced over at my sister and I conspiratorially...that meant we were DEFINITELY going to see it! And we did.
I had the biggest crush on Darth Vader, and couldn't see what the other girls saw in that wimpy Luke or crabby Han Solo. Still don't.

I bought the original paperback (the one with Luke wearing a breather) and then later saw a press kit showing the costumes and I remember thinking how close they had come to Darth Vader's look on the book cover. Then I went and saw the movie when it came out and thought how it was the beginning of a new era of sci-fi.
More than that, on my second viewing I brought along my buddy to see it and we ran into two girls in line. Since the lines generally lasted a few hours, we struck up a conversation, sat next to them in the movie, and then asked them out afterward. To make a long story short, one girl became the first great love of my life and the other married my friend. The real irony is that the girl later broke up with me and my friend eventually got divorced thus revealing what many of us would find out much, much later...that the greatness of Star Wars wouldn't last forever.
I was born in '75, but I was old enough to retain a faint memory of going to see the original Star Wars at a drive-in movie theatre. My mom and my aunt took me, and while I don't remember it, they say I was REALLY scared of Chewbacca LOL
Anyways, SW has definitely been a big part of my life from that moment on. At our wedding, my best man snuck an Obi-Won action figure in my tux pocket for a good luck, which I later stuck on top of the wedding cake. And during the ceremony, the pastor (knowing my love for Star Wars) asked if I had been looking forward to my wedding day as much as I had been looking forward to Episode III Revenge Of The Sith. It was a very comical moment, and I held my hand up and shook it to symbolize that both days were about even :p

I saw it 11 times in its first run. That first moment just after the text scroll when the blockade runner and star destroyer show up was absolutely mind-blowing to me. I was already into animation and effects but that really sealed the deal, I knew I had to work on stuff like that.
There's a new book out (http://www.amazon.com/Making-Star-Wars-Definitive-Original/dp/0345494768/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-9656867-2622056?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180190475&sr=8-1) (a huge tome) about the making of the original Star Wars. I saw it at borders for about $35, which is way cheaper than amazon right now.

I don't remember seeing it the first run because it came out three years before I was born, but I remember getting the action figures as a kid that I sold later to buy me first car.
I was in high school with they rereleased the original trilogy and saw all three on their opening nights.

It was the last film my father took me to see before he died in the summer of 1977. Love the film but it's a bittersweet memory.

Damn, Lynd...
That just makes all of our stories seem so trivial.

I am also one of the old ones who saw Star Wars in the theatre in 1977. I was only 5 years old at the time but I vividly remember the experience, my mother and grandmother took me to see it. Looking back on it now I can't imagine how my grandmother sat through it, she probably thought it was utter nonsense. She also took me to see Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, I am sure she didn't know what to think of those films either.

Sorry dude, didn't mean to bring y'all down. It's strange that a film that I love brings with it a sad memory. Although, it was my dad that gave me my love of film. We had a local flea pit, that ran Saturday morning double bills, plus all the old Flash Gordon etc serials. (Got to love Buster Crabbe (great name)). My dad used to take me and my brothers every week without fail.
