They're both pretty pathetic compared to the manga, but between the two which do you think is better?

Negima 2 hands down.

Negima 2 hands down.
Really? Other than the first three eps I didn't like Negima 2 much, I thought it was just bizarre and didn't have much to do with the original story at all...

Only seen the first anime series (not AS bad as most people says IMHO), and the OVAs (rather funny). I'll let you know whenever I catch the Negima?! version.

I'd agree with that, there were definitely things I liked about it.

I've never seen the second one, and I've only caught a few episodes of Negima 1 on Television, and from what I saw there it looked like it was just a toned down version of the Manga--not necessarily horrible, but definately hurt by what looked like a very terse budget and a lack of quality in the look and feel of it.

I've heard that Negima 2 is better in terms of those things, but that its story is vastly different from the Manga. I guess its kind of a trade off. Too bad they weren't willing to make Negima 2 a full blown remake of Negima 1 with better animation.

Anime 2 OAVs win all. The first anime was alright, up until the point where they hacksawed the biggest arc in the manga up to then. You can't just compress three volumes of adventure into one episode.

The second anime definitly looked better, but spent too much time on the silliness and not on the characters.

What Negima 1 did was unforgivable in my opinion ... At least Negima 2 didn't try to pretend it was following the main story and was clearly an alternate version from the start instead of a halfassed watered down version of the manga up till the end where they gave up the pretense. Add the fact the second had better art and music and you have a clear winner .

Agreed. They really couldn’t have adapted the whole manga into a 26 episode series and expecting them to do so is just unreasonable.

Is the second series even out yet? I haven’t even seen any DVDs out yet. Given that the first series was well-liked until the end, it’s a little weird that we’d decide that a (presumably) unfinished series is better.
