the spirit vs. punk rock!
.......or at least the blue man group.
crazy bluespace rock turns waypost punkers blue - and they become the next big thing . elvarro mortez's half brother rico shows up , rips off the band and their crazy bluespace rock drugs. "just apply directly to the forhead"
no , im not makin this up! - but it works for some reason - the spirit allmost saves the day, but not really
....best line "please. they're just punks."

You gotta love that splash page.
This was a good Spirit story in the more classic Eisner vein, where the Spirit himself takes backstage to the human tragedy of the issue's guest-stars.

"Almost Blue was gonna' be a punk rocker."
This issue was awesome. Great, magnificent art, incredible, weaving storytelling, wonderful characterization. Comedy, tragedy, action. Cooke needs to be cloned and put to work on every superhero DC's got. I said it in another thread and I'll say it again!
If you aren't reading Darwyn Cooke's The Spirit, you secretly hate comics.

"This guy's a cop!" "Aw, hell."
Oh Spirit, you never cease to make me laugh with your everyman crime fighting attitude. That and after 60 years, you're still cool.
I can't describe this book's awesomeness past what Jack Zodiac said. He captured it right there.

How was this compared to #5?I've loved this series until last month's silly bird issue.

Last month's issue was comedic brilliance. This week's was human tragedy.

Which is entirely appropriate, given that Eisner was comfortable with both of those modes of writing, and often combined tragedy and comedy within the same story.
That splash page might be the best one that Darwyn has done yet. A two-page spread is similar in shape to a record cover, and Darwyn made excellent use of this fact.

Eisner was a maestro of writing emotion. In one issue, he could make you laugh your ass off and pages later start weeping. Cooke's one of a handful of writers, I think, who could possibly emulate Will's writing.

I especially loved the "presented in High Fidelity by" icon in the corner. Once again, I'm glad Cooke's able to have as much fun Eisner was with the title pages.

Haha... they apply it directly to their forehead!
Another great issue in one of DC's best ongoings.
the last one I did not like so much, this one.....AWESOME!!!! :D
Great stuff. Cooke took a story that could have been cliche and heavy-handed about the dangers of drug use and made it a great read. It just felt real.
I wonder if Cooke could write one more ongoing for DC. I dropped superman confidential. I know he has other stuff cooking outside comics, but I would love to see him do more Batman/Gotham stories. In fact they should launch a new title, Gotham, written by Cooke maybe, drawn by Allred!

Cooke/Allred would be an amazing team. I wouldn't mind seeing Darwyn on another crime-noir book. Maybe relaunch Gotham Central?
