If anything shows just how vacant and rubbish American films can be then this is the perfect example.

A remake of the classic British crime film The Long Good Friday is being planned, it has been confirmed.
The 1980 original starred Bob Hoskins as an East End gangster whose criminal empire comes under attack from a wave of mysterious bombings.

Production company Handmade Films said the story would be "refreshed" with a modern setting.

Filming is due to start in Miami in 2008 under the direction of Paul W S Anderson, who made Resident Evil.

Handmade chairman Patrick Meehan said: "The original was a highly praised classic and one of Handmade's most prized films, but its reach was limited primarily to the UK.

"Following continued interest from the US, we realised this remake could attract audiences worldwide with an updated setting and contemporary overtones.

"When Paul presented his creative vision for this project, we were instantly convinced that this is a story that could be successfully refreshed, yet leave the integrity of the original intact."

Anderson added: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to put a new spin on this classic film which promises to reveal today's gritty underworld in an equally shocking fashion."

No actors have so far been confirmed for the project.

It's not just the bollocks about 'refreshing the story', or showing 'today's gritty underworld', it's the fact that nobody quoted seems to have understood what the original film was about. It wasn't just a gangster film, (or a film about the IRA) it was as much about the rise of Thatcherism as it was about gangsters.

It was a product of it's time but even though it's nearly 30 years old it's still fresher than the majority of Hollywood product. I understand why they're doing it; your average moviegoer in the US won't have seen the original so it'll seem like a fresh idea when it reality it isn't.

So basically this is yet another travesty to rank alongside the rubbish remakes of 'Alfie', 'The Italian Job' and 'Get Carter'.

I feel a blog rant coming on....

What's worse for me personally is in the same article I read that he's currently remaking Deathrace 2000! Sure it's crap - but it's glorious crap.

Mr. Anderson couldn't make a good movie if he tried and the notion of him having an artistic vision for The Long Good Friday is frankly laughable.

Obviously Handmade have gone to shit now that George Harrison is dead.

BTW, there's a new release of Long Good Friday on DVD with massive extras, including Bob Hoskins talking about how he happened to meet Harrison at a party, and that's how the movie got completed.

This new Handmade is nothing to do with the old Handmade. The rumour is that this is only the first of a series of remakes using the old back catalogue, so expect Michael Bay's version of 'Withnail & I'.
