ive been a marvel reader for several years now and found it really only took me about 6 months to get caught up with continuity to the point i could understand it.

im trying to get into DC now, but am finding it much harder. Batman and Superman were easy enough to pickup, but i feel like DC's B and C List characters are less accessible to new readers than marvels were. What ongoing titles are core to the mainstream DCU storyline? i.e. (in marvel you really have to read Amazing Spider-Man, but Friendly Neighboorhood doest really have a big imact on universe-wide continuity), and what storylines should i read to get caught up on the DCU.

have read, Hush, Infinite Crisis, 52, Countdown (so far)

I think your biggest problem is the fact that you've only read the stories that are the heaviest in continuity. Start with the basics..Batman: Year One and Long Halloween. Superman: Birthright. Green Arrow Longbow Hunters and/or Quiver. Green Lantern: Rebirth. Shazam!: New Beginning. Stuff like that.. Current team books like JSA and Teen Titans also do an excellent job of explaining background and such, so they're easy to get into. Villains United and Birds of Prey also both great with Bs, Cs, and Ds.

And there's always Wikipedia >_>

The first two Manhunter tpbs would be good. She's a new character assuming an old identity, and the book has references to others that have carried the moniker of Manhunter.

If you like the tpbs, hopefully the rest of the series will be easy to find in singles.

If you just want good stories, Gotham Central.

Wait... wasn't the story Long Halloween a long time ago..? I haven't read it, that's why I'm asking...

Also, what was Batmand year one about?

Pretty much what the title says.

There are references from Year One in Long Halloween. Year One is the first appearence of Carmine Falcone.

Year One has Batman as a rookie, meeting Gordon for the first time. Gordon's trying to clean up a very corrupt GCPD. Batman's first altercations with the police are here. Catwoman brought down to earth as a prostitute, and is the same Holly Robinson from Catwoman's current title. Gordon has a side story about his marriage.

Long Halloween makes Falcone a big player, and portrays this as the time when all the "freaks" took over; when Joker, Two Face; all of the more popular rogues were moving into Gotham in the middle of good old fashioned mystery. Also, the Catwoman in this tale is Selina Kyle.

I would recommend both.
