View Full Version : Future Showcase Presents?

Poking around a bit just now on the Showcase Presents forum at the Marvel Masterworks site, I came across the following unofficial list of upcoming Showcases (as well as a few other pertinent purported publications) --

SEPTEMBER
Showcase Presents Teen Titans (presumably vol 2)
Showcase Presents Batman And The Outsiders
Sword Of The Atom TPB

OCT
Wonder Woman Archives
Showcase Presents Captain Carrot And His Amazing Zoo Crew
Showcase Presents Metal Men
The Batman Chronicles
The Question TPB (Dennis O'neil, 176 pages)
Superman The Bottle City Of Kandor TPB (Author listed as Edmond Hamilton, so this must be a collection similar to "Daily Planet")

NOV
Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus
Batman Archives
The JSA All Stars Archives (doesn't say what's in it, but if I'm doing the math correctly on the Canadian list price, it's a normal-sized Archive)
Showcase Presents The Great Disaster Featuring The Atomic Knights (That's how Chapters lists the title)
Showcase Presents The Suicide Squad (Author listed as John Ostander)

DEC
Showcase Presents Jonah Hex (presumably vol 2)
Showcase Presents The Secret Society Of Super-Villains
Legion Of Super-Heroes: An Eye For An Eye TPB (by Paul Levitz)
Superman/Batman: Saga Of The Super Sons TPB (Bob Haney!)

JAN?
HERO TPB (Will Pfeifer. I didn't expect this to ever get collected. I wonder if it's related to Countdown?)

Interesting, to say the least, perhaps most of all because the Capt Carrot, Batman/Outsiders & Suicide Squad volumes would definitely bypass the 1976 boundary for Showcase Presents. Same, I suppose, for a vol 2 Jonah Hex.

If all of the above indeed show up, I think I'd be buying most of 'em. Heck, I just now got through eyeing prices on the World's Finest Super Sons ishes from Mile High & Lone Star, & I've been pining for a Metal Men Showcase ever since the line started.

Now, how in heck they might stretch the 15 (I think) ishes of SSOSV into a Showcase, I have no idea ... first appearances by the respective members?

Oh, yeah -- another thread in that forum posits that the "Great Disaster" volume will reprint not only the "Atomic Knights" strips but also the Hercules Unbound [/B]run & maybe Kirby's OMAC as well. Most of those I've already got, courtesy of the Atomic Knights reprints in Strange Adventures & the original H. Unbound , but what the heck ...

Exciting lineup of material, isn't it? The Secret Society book must indeed have some padding, since there's only 395 pages of "authentic" SSOV; that's including the issue from Cancelled Comic Cavalcade, which may not be available (but we can hope), the issue of DC Special Series featuring the team, the unpublished version of issue 1 from Amazing World of DC Comics, and the 3-part JLA/JSA teamup that wrapped up the loose ends from SSOSV. They could pick up another 35 pages by including DC Special #27, which featured SSOSV's token hero, Captain Comet in a contemporaneous team-up with Tommy Tomorrow, bringing us to 430 pages. Still lacking about 100 pages, since this fall's Showcases appear to mostly be dropping down to around 520 pages. DC Super Stars #14 might be deemed appropriate, since Grodd's included; "Secret Origins of Super-Villains" gives 37 more pages for 467. Alternative backup material might be the Captain Comet stories from Superteam Family (i.e., "Showcase Presents SSOSV featuring Captain Comet") or the complete run of Kobra if they want to focus on villain-centered series (saving the Joker's series for a future "Batman Family" installment).

Do you think we'll ever see a Doom Patrol Showcase?

SSOSV started in 1976, so that should go past the boundary.

I'd like to get the Metal Men Showcase. I'm a fan of the 1970s revival, but the I only have a digest (which I haven't read yet) reprinting a few 1960s stories.

This is the first I've heard about SHOWCASE PRESENTS CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW!, but needless to say, I'm delighted. It makes sense, though, since the first issue of CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARC -- by Bill Morrison and myself, with inks by Al Gordon and colors by Tom Luth -- will hit shops in September.

I'm also happy to see that METAL MEN and WONDER WOMAN will both be SHOWCASEd that month...Kanigher, Andru and Esposito at their most enjoyably Oddball!

Let's face it, DC's SHOWCASE PRESENTS and MARVEL ESSENTIALS continue to be the best bathroom reading ever!

Aloha,

Scott!

Do you think we'll ever see a Doom Patrol Showcase?

At some point, surely. Those comics have to be considered vastly less obscure than, say, The War That Time Forgot.

As someone in the aforementioned forum pointed out, virtually everything from that list apparently ties into new product spinning out of the events of Countdown (or so I gather ... personally, with every passing Wednesday my resolve to ignore virtually everything that's happened in comics, especially Marvel & DC, in the last 10 years ... hell, maybe the last 30 years -- is growing stronger & stronger).

As I said, Scott!, the above is highly unofficial, but I gather the source of the info is somewhat knowledgeable, so ... here's hoping!

Which as it happens I asked about a couple of hours ago in the DC Universe forum, since it's apparently been delayed twice now. I think it was originally scheduled to come out in March or April, then was moved to June, & now is showing September. Seems to have swapped places in the schedule with, possibly, War That Time Forgot, which certainly doesn't bother me in the slightest ...

Showcase Presents Teen Titans (presumably vol 2)
Showcase Presents Metal Men
Showcase Presents The Great Disaster Featuring The Atomic Knights
Showcase Presents Jonah Hex (presumably vol 2)

This are the ones that jumped out at me. I already have runs of BATO and SSoSV. The Captain Carrot collection isn't a high priority (sorry, Scott) but I'm sure I'll pick it up sooner or later.

Wow. An O'Neill Question collection? That's been on a lot of peoples' wish lists for a long time. Plus, an Ostrander Suicide Squad showcase? Another must have. I hope these listings are legit, although I remember hearing something about the SS Showcase a while back.

Also, I love Great Darkness, so is there any further information on the Levitz Legion volume?

Captain Jim

I dunno; after being inundated by cool Showcase volumes this spring and summer, there isn't much here that interests me. I'd rather see more of the older material than all this more modern stuff. Only thing here that interests me is proabably Metal Men. Where is the second volume of Superman Family? That's what I'm waiting for.

I checked two of the listed books, the 'Super-Sons' and the Legion; Amazon lists them as 'not available', but they have an isbn no. and a page count, and so does isbndb.com. Perhaps there's some truth to this rumor.

Oh god, great stuff coming down the pipe.

Suicide Squad, Metal Men, Jonah Hex Volume 2, The Atomic Knights

Personally I could do without all the really silverage Superman/Batman/JLA stuff. Give me more of this 70s goodness. The 70s, when comics really got creativly AWESOME.

Checking the Wiki page on the Atomic Knights, adding the the main title "The Great Disaster" might mean well see a Herculese Unbound or Kamandi Showcase in the future under the same title. As they all take place in the same universe.

Right. Because who needs Enemy Ace, Sugar and Spike and Captain Action when you could have Gerry Conway writing everything. :)

Not sure why this would be needed, as the 10 ishes of Hercules Unbound are supposed to be included in the Atomic Knights volume.

Yeah -- what storyline is this "Eye for an Eye" anyhoo?

I would guess (only a GUESS) it's the issues of the 80s LSH immediately following the Great Darkness Saga (roughtly 295-300 or so). It had an Emerald Emperess storyline, art by Giffin when he was in his George Perez-like detail phase.

Less likely but possible are the Emerald Emperess story from the mid 80s (LSH v3 somewhere in the 30s) or late 80s (LSH v3 51 or so).

The mid 80s story was pretty undistinguished so I consider it unlikely. The late 80s one was very interesting, Giffin returned to the Legion, significantly redesigned all their costumes and tech and the storyline was pretty edgy with many members leaving. But again I consider it unlikely. The early 80s story has the 'classic' versions we're seeing in the current JLA story.

Wow. Is that like the most amazing list of artists compiled in one book ever, or what? (I know there's been a lot EC volumes put out lately, but look at that list!) Other than Kirby's Kamandi and Simonson's Hercules Unbound (talk about elaborate costumes), with which I am already familiar, would you say that the art ranks amongst the best of (or at least in line with) many of the artists' more famous work, or was this more of a rent-paying gig? I'm asking because the sheer amount of talent involved has my curiousity piqued.

The only significant work by big name artists in this volume will be Anderson (Atomic Knights), Kirby (Atlas, from First Issue Special), Garcia-Lopez/Wood and Simonson (Hercules Unbound) and Swan (Superman). Marshall Rogers does a series of backups set in Kamandi's world of talking animals, but it is very early, very rough work. Don't get too excited about the other big names in the list: they are mostly (if not all) from a filler feature called "The Day After Doomsday" that ran in Weird War Tales and the "House of" and Unexpected. Most are only 2 pages long, and served as training grounds for the likes of Miller and Chaykin, or as "rent-paying gigs" for the likes of Alcala, Nino and Ditko. You'll notice a lot of unfamiliar names on that list, too: a lot of these are people who, for whatever reason, didn't make it very far past their training ground assignments. It's still something to look forward to, but there's going to be a lot of rookie-quality artwork. This is far from the magnificent artistic showcase you might have anticipated based on the lineup.

Hmm, as much as I prefer the earlier stories in general, I may have to pick-up the Suicide Squad volume. Great stuff, as I recall, and I don't think I had them all.

Have you noticed that this seems to demonstrate a change in DC's Showcase reprint policy? To date, they've been pretty much sticking with a super-hero each month (usually an iconic one) and a non-super-hero each month. Now it suddenly looks like we're tying in with upcoming revived titles (which I guess makes sense sales-wise, but I hope they don't forget about the older material).

Scott Shaw!

I wish that DC would include the ORIGINAL "Suicide Squad" stories -- by Kanigher, Andru and Esposito -- from THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD in that collection.

But I'm delighted that they're reprinting CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE ZOO CREW!, even if seeing my twenty-five-year-old artwork makes me cringe a bit. Between that and CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARC -- by Bill Morrison, myself, Al Gordon and Tom Luth -- also to be published in September, it demonstrates that DC is really going all-out to support the property and our new project with the characters that Roy Thomas and I co-created.

(And to those who are pooh-poohing the new series, I guarantee that, between our commentary on the comic book industry, Bill's script, my art and the mini-series' final pages, you'll be more satisfied with the results than you ever thought possible.)

Aloha,

Scott!

Aloha,

Scott!
I was very happy to see that Captain Carrot got the Shaw...the ShOwcase treatment. You did a very good job there Scott, and Roy is one of my favorite writers.
And there's a new mini serie coming you say? Excelent :)

Thanks, Stephane. Unfortunately, Rascally Roy won't be involved in the new series, Fortunately, Roy's assembling a special issue of ALTER EGO that examines the original series, complete with a new cover by Yours Truly.

Aloha,

Scott!
