Well, Stephem King still pumps em out from time to time. Nothing as drawn out as SHogun.

I think that style of storytelling has been kind of taken by the HBO style 13 episode season strucutre for really good dramas.

Mini-Series still pop up on cable networks from time-to-time, too. Sci-Fi usually does at least one "big/semi-big" one per year. Though many of them are failed pilots for ongoing series.

Just gonna guess they got crappy ratings?

Some of them did pretty well for Cable TV. "Battlestar Galactica" started as a mini-series and did well enough to get an ongoing series. "Dune" and "Children of Dune" were also fairly successful, IIRC (successful enought that they actually considered trying to spin it into a series somehow, which probably would have been a baaaaad idea). Not too sure about the other ones they've aired, though. I know "Riverworld" didn't exactly take off. Nor did "Earthsea" but that may have been because they were crappy adaptation. The only other one I can think of at the moment is "the Triangle" which was just meant to be a one-shot anyway.

Val Kilmer is starring in a mini-series, "Commache Moon".
Based on the "Lonesome Dove" Characters.
Suppose to come out next fall on CBS.

Hanks, and I believe Spielberg as well, are doing a sequel to Band of Brothers.

Not a sequel per se, but a companion piece showing the other theater of the war. It was greenlit by HBO a couple or three weeks ago, IIRC.

It's called "The Pacific."
