GODFATHER is definitely THE epic romantic mob movie, however anytime the question has been posed to real mobsters, they say GOODFELLAS is by far the more realistic of the two.

they're about different times.
It's hard to compare the two.
so it's like the 50's vs. the 80's.
it was a different mob.
I'd say Goodfellas was more exciting and you get more of a sense of the rush of the fast life. Like the other poster said the Godfather was a more romanticized view on the mob. It's far more elegant.
I enjoy both, but Goodfellas just rings more true to me.

Godfather is more realistic in some ways while Godfather looks like a mob's tale.
I personally prefer Godfather

Homer has the right of it. Goodfellas is more realistic, more down to the bone gritty, more believeable.
But it doesn't hold a candle to The Godfather when you are discussing which is the "better" movie.

"Goodfellas" was the ultimate mob movie - it had a hyper-realistic style, with the way the film was shot in the POV of Henry Hill. The raw brutality of people getting killed over insults (hello Spider!) and others allowed to live because of their "usefulness" to the family showed that the ultimate drive was not honor, but profit.
I think "Goodfellas" was a "better" movie in two ways- unlike "The Godfather" this was not a story of an immigrant nobly struggling for survival and respect in America. "Goodfellas" how shallow and self-serving all the mobsters were. Jimmy was willing to kill anyone, including Henry's wife, to save his own ass.
"Goodfellas" also showed more realistically the consequences of this hedonistic lifestyle. Henry Hill destroyed his family, through infidelity and drug use, because the credo of the mobster was "if it feels good, do it."
