Before heading out to Motor City Con, I did 2 more paintings (One of these I posted, but don't know how many folks saw it before the 'upgrade').....

well, I guess I won't. The normal size pic I pst here is 3x too large according to the new attachment browser.

Hope to have them both on my site soon, will link to them then

You could also use superdownloads.net for the interim:

http://photoshop.superdownloads.net/

Max size 100kb. And you have to give your files very unique names or they could get swapped with other images. It's also not a durable host over time (I think they purge every now and again) but it's a good temporary host.

I've only been to anime and manga cons, and I know they don't charge anything to see the guests.

... Then again, I didn't get to see TM Revolution last year, so I dunno if they charged for autographs. But the concert he put on was rather nice, and I'm not even into J-pop/rock at all. :)

They were charging? To let people just see Ron!? That's disgusting! I've been doing cons for eight years now, I've never heard of anything like that.

Tho I've never been to a Star Trek con, I've heard they're just excuses for vendors to make a killing. Maby it's different outside the completely fan-run cons?

Nice. Do me a favor? Take yer right hand and put it on yer left shoulder, then put yer left hand on yer right shoulder. Shake yer self back and forth and side to side. Thanx, saves me from having to travel to Calgary to give ya a good shake.

There's no need for remotely-directed, self-inflicted physical violence, my friend. From your frustrated howl in the post I was replying to, it seemed that you were in distress and I was merely politely trying to assist. And Casper is a friendly ghost. I wasn't being insulting. Yeesh... sensitive!

And as noted, I have no con experience, but the $20 for an autograph did strike me as a wee bit crass. I don't go in much for autographs (except on big fat checks endorsed to me) but if I buy an artist's work or an author's book or generally show appreciation and admiration for someone by requesting an autograph, I would hope they would confirm my reasons for admiration by having the grace to do it for free. I can sort of understand doing it to keep the crowds down, but overall it seems weird.

And dammit, now Petersen's charging for autographs too!!

When did you forget where you came from, Petersen? You used to be so cool, man. I remember when you were a nice, down-to-earth guy, but if you're going to play that way, then you're paparazzi fodder now, bub-- I'm going to be telling ALL the embarassing anecdotes to the highest bidding tabloid. How do you like your celebrity status now huh? HUH? ;)

Petersen
05-17-2004, 07:19 AM
ruta, please please don't tell them about..you know what

Ok, ok..how 'bout this, I only charge $20 for signings to folks who have ever used the words scifi or rex in thier handles? ;)

I don't mind celebs charging a bit, I mean they do take time out and fly and have to stay at a hotel and deal with scads of mindless fools (When someone was sitting in for Ron durring a break someone near me said, in a very serois tone, "that's not Ron Pearlman" REALLY? did the fact that the guy is 120lbs of asian geek tip you off?) $20 for a sig seems high though. Some cons ahve you pay for a ticket to be able to get into the signing area, but then that is all.

had I not be worried about our aged sick doggie and remembered to hit an ATM I might have gotten a sig or waited for a Julie sig for Otto.

-Petersen

Otto66
05-17-2004, 07:59 AM
David? I'm still not straight on this. Was it $20 for a RonBoy
signature or was it costing $20 to get into the signing area
for all of the guests?
As for Julie Benz? There will be other cons. ;)

Petersen
05-17-2004, 08:27 AM
Otto: $20 was for a ticket to get Ron's signature. Getting into the area was free, other celebs had various pricing, but as I had no cash on me (stupid, stupid, stupid) I didn't bother to see thier pricing.

J: you can see the darker section where they seperate, but I thought having them over the lip of the pestile would be obscene..'my cup runnith over'
Most are 4" x 11" on the left over paper from myy wedding invitations. Baba was smaller, but with the skull lanterns is 11" tall, and the 1st hellboy I did is smaller too, which is why I did the single scull, so that the new owner of that piece can make it match the abe they bought as well.

A: When doing a piece for NickW I did the single flame over her head and liked it. There is biblical refernece for that meaning anointed with the spirit. In this case 'the spirit' being her power, both blessing & curse.

Yea, I try NOT to but…well I’ve never been too good at not taking things personally. I usually get pretty good feedback for my works, I guess Hellboy fans are a bit harder to please. I’m not used to stuff of this media anyway so…but I was wondering, would to be all right if I asked you for a couple of tips? I didn't say it wasn't awesome. But I like to imagine that you and your pal who runs a tiki bar in Detroit and your other pal who has his own helicopter charter business solve crimes when you're not making art. Then you drive back in your borrowed Ferrari to the estate where you and your wife live in the guest house (to the annoyance of the estate's caretaker) and you make art. And when you make art, you have an inner monolgue that always begins: "Now I know what you're thinking..." ;)

Petersen

Almost all of these are 4"x11". Marv is a little shorter: 4x6.

These are all watercolored pieces. They exist in the real world. On a few I have done a little contrast bump or bump up a red or something like that, but I do not alter them very much at all (if at all) before posting them.

The Grifter really does have that great sense of motion.
Loved Grifter ever since the first WIldcats, sadly with v2 and 3 I didn't keep up. There was a period in the service for about 3 years I had stopped reading comics. The fist comic convention I went to I was one of the guys from Cry for Dawn do a piece where Grifter was shooting the Power Rangers. We both found it extremely funny. Wish I knew where it was now.

Great stuff, man. Really unique. Who do you cite as influences?

R.High praise coming from you rick.
I learned to draw copying images by Eastman & Laird, and graduated up to Art Adams & Jim Lee. But that was junior high.

Now I'm interested in Adam Hughes, Mignola, Miller, Tim Sale. But I have also been looking at more illustrators like N.C. Wyeth.

AS far as this painting style...it comes down to this..I feel most of my paintings fall a little flat, don't have enough punch. So I started painting a little looser and applying this linework (which is inspired by the hard line around a coffee mug stain).

I’ve sort’ve been ignoring the Spiderman comics of recent, because I don’t like how they’ve been drawing them…but that’s just a personal view. But I really love this Spiderman painting, the colors are glorious. It reminds me a lot of…not sure how to put this, well what a stained glass Spiderman would look like if anyone ever bothered to do that. Just the way the lines and colors are, and I like that affect a lot even if I’m the only one it appears that way too.

But he is, hanging Han on the wall so he could stare at him(Han) in a submissive position. Watching male pod racers, going round and round with powerful machines under them. The list goes on. Not as gay as Harry Potter tho'

Hellsaint: The trick with watercolor is patience. Orginization doesn't hurt either. Having your tray be clean with colors apart from one another helps, and letting something dry, or partialy dry before adding more to it is what keeps you from the 'mud' look. I typicly have 2 of these going at once so that while parts of one are drying, I'm working on a differnt one, and then swith them back and forth.

I still find the Joker's anonymity to be disturbingly creepy. I think "unknown" would work to good effect, foreshadowing the unknown details of his inevitable escape and murder spree.

Yes. Went fanboy on the Hush issues even bought the hardcovers

has been the best. Big new series crossing story line coming this summer.

I want Croc

Petersen
06-03-2004, 10:56 AM
Not being an avid DC reader, my main exposure to croc was the animated series...What is the best depiction of him? I have seen Lee's version where he is more beast like, and then a few BtAS versions...

I do have a slot open in the line up...thinking about:
clayface (again, animated series is main exposure and not accurate to comic)
Vantrilliquist (little booring)
Ras AlGul (spelling wrong, too lazy to correct..also he never would be in Arkham)
Croc (don't know enough about him)
Solomon Grundy (Loeb seems to like writing about him, but I dunno)
Catwoman (I rarely think of her as a villan, more of an adversary...plus I don't like the idea that she could be taken into police custody)

and on the definately not list are: Bane, Harley, Anarchy, or any 'Adam West TV show only' villans.

So what do you guys think? Help me pick
-Petersen
and yes Fitz, they do line up. Did the rough sketch of Joker and Riddler last night while drunk on bad wine...I wonder if they look as good as I remember they did last night....

Not taken wrongly at all. I did 3 sketches of Mr. Dent. One with more dent, one facng front and one with more bad side. I think that the interesting part of harvey is the other side. When writing about him, it's more interesting to play up the harvey side, makes a dynamic story., but for a single painting I thought the bad side was visualy interesting over the good.

Robert, you're describing most people at some point in their lives, but particularly the early part of their lives when hormones and emotions rule. (Your brain won't be hard-wired for rational decision making until your mid-twenties, on average). We've all been in what seem like silly emotional places when we look back on them, but they were terrible and deeply painful at the time. We have all also listened to sucky music at some time. I fail to see the point of insulting someone when they're down.

ICBM, yelling at newbies isn't useful either.

But enough of this threadjack. Petersen, I'm really liking these, but they mainly have me giddy with anticipation for the Mignolaverse stuff, me being not so much a Batman fan, I'm afraid. :)

Finsihed with the Arkham series....

Joker: I never drew a version I was fully happy with and this was the best of the lot

Ivy: Although I like it, I realized too late that she is in odd proportion to ther otehrs based on the line-up lines and the Gotham PD ID.

However, I am very happy with the series as a whole and should have them displayed as a set on my website in the next few days.

Booze and (Censored ).

We buy eachother booze all the time. "Round of Carbombs on me," is a pretty common phrase with us. And for (Censored), I'm a firm believer in getting your own when it comes to that. That and the married one's wife would kill me if she ever found out. :D

You Old World chaps and your car bombs. Here in the States, we prefer the more hands-on busting of a cap in one's arse. Of course, if you really wanted revenge, you'd covertly invite someone to a Springer taping. Or a dance-off, ala "you got served".

Isn't it "bust a cap in your ass?." "Arse" is sooooooo bourgeois sloaney British. Still, I bet it sounds really wierd if you're American and say it. ARSE.

"Ass" is the appropriate word as used in that phrase, but I was trying to clean up the language by using a foreign word. And yes, English as spoken across the pond is a foreign language. Besides, Grant Morrison uses the word "arse", so its cool, eh?

Weirder sounding than a Yank saying arse is a white guy trying to talk "street".

Handbags at twenty paces, peeps.

You are right, though. It is distinctly cringeworthy, and something I really would rather not hear!
And may I also clarify the fact that I did not say Yank. It's mildly offensive, and along the same lines as Limey so it's in my banned words box.

Offensive? I didn't think you were allowed to post here if you had nothing offensive to say.
I've always wondered what the origin of the word "Limey" was....care to enlighten me, anyone? Especially if its offensive.

Athena
06-11-2004, 09:44 AM
The story is that when sailors landed at foreign shores, having been at sea for weeks they were deficient in vitamin c, and this meant that they were prone to scurvy. Now, despite the fact that at that time citrus fruits were expensive, they used to put them on board the ship, and have a slice in their water ration (which is why you have a slice of lemon in so many drinks). However, because they didn't last very long (no GM or radiation) the last few weeks the sailors were without the fruit, therefore becoming prone to scurvy. Hence, the first thing they would do is run to the trees and suck the limes/lemons whatever.

So, you end up with the term limey.
Here endeth the lesson.

It's the reinforcement of a general stereotype about the British. When I say sailors, I'm not talking about taught muscular navy seals. I'm on about rough drunk nasty horrible men who hadn't had a bath for weeks and whose teeth were falling out their heads (from the scurvy).

Someone else who hated "E.T." ? Its no wonder
we get along so well.

Saw "E.T." at the movies. Had this jerk sitting behind me who
talked to the screen during the movie. Not to his date or the people
he was sitting with, but the screen. I figured he was "baked". The
last straw came when E.T. was dying and the jerk says, "Don't die, E.T.",
with a voice that sounded on the verge of tears. I stand up, turn around
and scream, "Its a rubber doll! Shut the F*** up!", and give him my best
Clint Eastwood glare. He shrinks back in his chair, I sit down and his date
prompts him to apologies. I hear a meek, "Sorry".

I am a movie house Nazi. I came to watch a movie not listen to
someone talk during the movie. Folks get all comfy in their chairs
and think their at home on the couch.
