Thanks for the compliments...I don't think the Petersen familiy is looking to take on new membership...sorry folks ;)

Thought you folks might like to see this:
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=35390

It served as a warm-up yesterday for starting on the next Fir Darrig story (which I am doing now!...well not RIGHT NOW..I took a break to type this)

That's an unbelievable outpouring of creativity... at the craziest time of year. You madman! Nice work.. I'm with ERS on the magnolia, and the headboard will surely be a lovely thing to live with! Also the comic is quite lovely - what a guy!

Holy crap, David, those are some amazing gifts. That headboard is stunning. And then you went and made another six page comic too. When do you sleep?

The comic is an interesting experiment. It's cool to see the narrative you drew out of the images. What was Michael's reponse to the story you saw in his drawings?

Got this in the inbox this mornin'

Awesome! Way cool Dave. It's wierd seeing my work but in a way it's not mine. I love it, and I love the end. Keep up all your great work.

Mike

Julia loves her headboard, I need to put some type of frame around it so you don't see the lamination lines of the plywood.

Oh wow...oh, those are just gorgeous. I can't even pick a favorite! They are just too lovely. I've helped my dad with some of his woodworking (nothing this detailed, though), so I know how much work goes into it.

I don't think the Petersen familiy is looking to take on new membership...sorry folks ;)

In that case, can I just adopt you instead? ;)

Just for clarification, I didn't have to do that much to Mike's work to make the mini comic. It's like playing tetris...you can do it without thinking too much, but you do get a strategy down..and before you know it, a few hours have slipped by.

and I do sleep..plenty! I have had the week off and it's ruining me. Without time contraints, I find much of they day has passed by the time I am up, showered, fed, and dressed. Monday will be a terrible experience when the alarm goes off again.

progress report: Fir Darrig: Harp of Sorrow is about 1/2 way written and the 1st page is drawn!

Same for me--I go back to school on the 10th, and I'm going to be completely destroyed because I've been getting up at 10:00 everyday for the last two weeks. The alarm is going to be the end of me come the tenth .

Nice taxes! I love the goblin--lots of character in that face! The hellboy one is sweet, too, it reminds me of the scene in Young Frankenstein when Fredrick is walking by the shelves with the heads at varying levels of decay :D.

I like the Hellboy in the skull depository sketch but Grugach is great! It's a cool composition. The Hellboy one is neat but in its black & white state the focus is a bit confusing around the RHOD and his face. I imagine that when it's coloured it will have a much better foreground/background balance.

Petersen
01-16-2005, 05:49 PM
Thanks Ruta, I kept that in mind when coloring Hellboy.

Gruagach is still a better image, though, even when colored

Maija
01-16-2005, 10:26 PM
Actually, I think you could lighten the skulls immediately behind Hellboy's face to accentuate the shadowed edge of his face.

I like it coloured though. And Grugach looks good too, the little creep. :)

01-17-2005, 12:22 AM
Those are both great drawings. I understand what ruta said about the backround confusing things around the hand but I still think I prefer both of these drawings in black and white. Maybe the background in the coloured one just needs to be a bit lighter. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you guys enjoy. It's a short story called: Fir Darrig: Harp of Sorrow. It will be in a book called "Ye Old Lore of Yore" which will be out in May.

T: Thank you. I am starting to miss the painting stuff again after all this pencil rendering. But that's ok, I will be doing a pianted cover for this book, and a painted back cover of crossstreeatist's book.

Y: In Jeremy's story called :Cursed pirate girl (the title was accualy in russian, that is the translation) her father has a octopus head. Her long thick braids kind of mimick his tentecles. I LOVE this page and am very happy to be the owner of it. It has the pirate girl (in her best panel) and her father!

J: Glad you checked back in. I like doing all sorts of differnt artwork. When I was applying to art school, for illustration, they keept questioning me "are you sure you don't mean sculpture??"

Coolness! I like the ghosted crown above his head.

Is his left hand reaching into a pocket for a charm? Maybe the edge of the pocket/pouch needs to be highlighted more or the pouch generally given more definition to clarify that.

E. Spears

When the woman who is heading up the auction and citizen's group to save this building aproached me about it, she was hoping to have something rendered in pencil like my gnomes, but of a full shot of this building. I wanted to gag. I really like the character of structures. I work in an architectural antique store that features building details from buildings that were torn down. What I'm saying is, I like the more artistic compositions and aproaches to architectural images. Most folks don't when they are getting a building portrait. They want the architect's elevation rendering. However, if there was an intrest in the style of image I make for architecture, I would definately do more of it! Perhaps a 'sampler' of well known architecture would help sway people's minds.

I'm glad you all like it. I dropped off the work yesterday. One of the coordinators owns a local coffee shop and offered to show more of that style of work If I would like. I told him that most of what I had in that style were comic book images. He was even more interested then.

good god this is a long post!

Cool!

As for people wanting elevations of their buildings, I think that's just because they're unaware of alternatives. When I discuss designs for anything with clients, they often don't have much of an idea of what they want and if they do, it's cliché, just because that's what they're familiar with. When I show them something completely different that they never thought of they get excited (although there are a few who REALLY, REALLY want the cliché and they are the pain-in-the-ass! No good can come from an engineer designing a logo for his firm while in posession of Ye Olde Englishe fonte. Brrrrrrrr. :p )

So, ANYWAY, if you put together a portfolio of the kind of architectural portraits you like to do, that could sway people.

I need to tweek it a bit more. I think text is too close to the edge, I didn't put in the live-area borders when laying it out. I agree about the flat white instead of beveled. I'm still not 100% on the image, but I guess that will come down to time.

Advice? Don't stop sending out samples of your work. Look through childrens books and find out who the designers are, and send them samples along with the book publishers. They may not have work for you immediately, but if they see your work on a steady basis, they'll find a project that fits you eventually.

Your work is impressive, and the quality is as professional as all the other work being published. The difference between you and a Sendak or Van Allsburg is exposure. You need to make yourself known is all, and the work will come.

Tad: Your daughter's mask inspired me...I had to put it in.

That's a really wonderful treasure for Emma. I do think you're bound to end up doing storybooks of one kind or another some how!

I agree with John. The illustrators I know who have gotten children's books published did it by pouring their all into it and knocking on a lot of doors.

Carolyn Fisher (http://www3.telus.net/public/carolynf/index.html) is one friend who's gotten two books published and had fun touring all over the States and Canada last summer planting potatoes with kids. Her children's book illustration is entirely digital, done in Painter.

I wasn't sure if you'd get it done for the spring one or not - May seems so close! In that case, I hope I can make it to the spring one so I can snag a copy of Mouse Guard. I'm going back up north at the end of April so any chance of my going depends on whether or not one of my parents have meetings in southern Ontario that weekend. Here's hoping!

And I'd love to have a Mouse Guard sketchbook. You say that it's just the images on the site, but I love those drawings! They're adorable and that inking of yours is just plain gorgeous.

I finished another page today and started a new one. While I don't want to spoil it by posting the pages..I will put up a few panels I am proud of

Just a suggestion - DON'T go with Cafepress if you decide to do merchandise. Given, you'd have a far easier selling things than I ever did, but despite that there are some icky rules at Cafepress if you open a store with them. It makes it rather unfriendly to individual artists. I can elaborate, but I'll keep that off the board and go more into detail in PM if you want.

Zazzle is a better alternative. They don't have the product selection that Cafepress has (Zazzle has a good selection of apparal, does posters/prints of various sizes as well as cards, but not mugs and the like), but you also know you'll get your all your money.

Do you get time to wander around the con at all or are you stuck at your table the whole time?
It's up to my discretion. I have to be at the table a minimum of 4 hours per day or something. Last time I stayed at my table mostly the whole time. I was sharing a table at that con and could have him watch my stuff if I left, but of course you risk the chance of interacting with that one person who may have been into your stuff and bought some items. Friday i'm alone at my table, but Sat & Sun Julia will be helping me.

I know I'll take one good scoot through the con. And Guy's table is top of the list to visit

Another great Jedi piece David! Can you show us anything yet from your new book for Kate?

Petersen
05-11-2005, 07:49 AM
I havn't started the Kate book yet. While at my sister-in-law's house over the Mother's day holliday, she mentioned to me that Kate knows her birthday is coming and has been saying that Uncle David is going to make a book for her 'just like emma's'. Thier Dad said I could just change the names in Emma's book, but I know that she will eventulay grow up enough to know/understand.
I want to do something different for her. Julia said it should have lamby (a lamb stuffed upper boday with a blankey for it's lower half. It was Emma's, so it's seen better days. Thier Dad wants Kate to get past her Lamby attachment.

Anyhow, I only heard about it This weekend and havn't formulated a story idea yet, just that it's about Kate and Lamby.

Once I get going, I'll post the work.

Kate's Mom doesn't feel the same as her Dad. In fact, she's ready to buy a new lamby (as this one is getting pretty tattered)

I thoought about Lamby moving away, but I dunno if I want to get in the middle of thier issue.

do you picture lamby just dying, Rick? or slowly giving up parts of itself to keep Kate happy untill all that's left is a scrap of cloth, ala 'The Giving Tree'??

JohnThompson

I know you didn't ask me, but I think borrowing an idea from "The Velveteen Rabbit" might work-- perhaps when Kate gives up the Lamby, it will allow it to become a real lamb. That way, the act of giving up a toy is selfless and heroic, rather than selfish as is the boy in the "Giving Tree".

My son Clayton had a cherished blankie that became tattered and holey, but he couldn't go to sleep or leave the house without it. We literally had to tie knots into it to keep it together. Eventually, we cut the blankie into strips, thinking that if he had a small piece to carry with him it would help the transition to preschool. He had grown so used to the knots in his blankie that the new strips each had to have its own knot, so he wound up with several bowtie-shaped rags.

He eventually got over the need to have the blankie, of course. We didn't ever want to make him feel guilty for keeping it, and certainly wouldn't have forced him to put it away. Its a tough one, and frankly I wouldn't want to be in the middle of the decision with Kate and her parents over Lamby. Good luck!

Here is my report:
Motor City Comic Convention Report, May 2005:

The spring MCCC is always a bigger con than the fall one. They open up the larger side of the Novi Expo center and extend the convention by a day. It typically draws bigger named artists and stars, but many of the bigger ones canceled this time around for various personal reasons.

Friday The convention was set to open at 1pm, but we were allowed to come in as early as 9am that day for set-up. Jeremy Bastian and I went right at 9 to see if we could secure the tables together that we needed. We had asked to be by a few people, but most importantly was that we be next to each other to promote ‘Ye Old Lore of Yore’ a 5 story, short story anthology book. We were in luck! Our tables were right next to each other in a pretty high traffic area.

The setup went well. I had my Mouse Guard books and sculptures out, original pages for sale, my original paintings & drawings, and prints of some of the originals. Jeremy sells hand-crafted bracelets made of shirt cuffs, leather, studs, and spikes that he draws into with a branding iron with really cool imagery and phrases in foreign languages. He also had copies of his book: Phantom Corp. Between us we had the Ye Old Lore of Yore books.

I had lots of folks compare my mouse guard book to Redwall on Friday, which was a bit disheartening. I had started my animal stories before I had even seen a Redwall book. Then a friend said ‘here you like drawing mice, you may enjoy this’ and I put Mouse Guard off for a while knowing it would be compared to Brian Jaques popular series. Well I have gotten over that idea thinking ‘I have consciously made it different, and there is nothing new under the sun, I can’t postpone my life because someone else is successful’ so hearing it time after time Friday was tough. By the day’s end, I had sold some books, but we weren’t getting the attention I had hoped. The best part of the day was giving the Mouse Guard sculpture that I made for Guy Davis to him. He was very surprised, because I told him I would never sell them. Instead I made one especially for him as a thanks for all the support he has given me on the book (including an unbelievable pin-up)!!!!

That night Jeremy and I finished the posters that promoted Ye Old Lore, and Mouse Guard by mounting them to foam core. Saturday had much more promise with two 3 foot by 5 foot posters as our backdrop. Julia joined us. She was a huge help. It’s hard to be pleasant, make change, work on the convention sketch someone should be back for in a few minutes, make sure no one is taking anything, and mark how much of what is sold. Julia was able to take a lot of that weight off of me. Saturday was mad! There were many, many, many more people at the convention in the 1st place, but lots of them were stopping by our tables. I sold about half of my stock of Mouse Guard, a few original drawings, sketches and a page from Mouse Guard….but it gets better. I was getting rave reviews. The Redwall comments had stopped, and suddenly I was getting other pros coming over. Bill Baker (comics journalist) came over and had a chat with me about the future of the book an how impressed he was with it. I also had a talk with several of the folks at a prominent small publisher looking to print/promote the book when I have enough material for a ‘perfect bound edition’ aka: trade paperback. We talked about market strategy (my book is 8” square and most comic shops are going to have a hard time with the individual issues as it can’t be bagged, boarded, or boxed.) but a trade could make it into shops easier as well as family bookstores, and libraries. The folks at that booth were definitely enthused by the book, I think I sold at least one copy to everyone there.

Sat night I hung out with friends. We got into quoting ‘Anchorman’ at dinner. One friend hadn’t seen it, so we popped it in afterwards. I promptly fell asleep form exhaustion. Woke up at 11, chatted with my best friend for a few hours bringing him up to speed on the convention news (he couldn’t make it Saturday) and like it always is with old friends chatting, before you know it, it’s 2:30am. Then I realized, I had ran out of my best selling prints. So we went to work printing up what I needed. It was 5am before I got to bed.

Sunday started slow, but ended up very, very good. I was able to acquire a sketch from Vince Locke (look at his work if you haven’t) and some pages from Guy Davis. I was being asked to sign copies of Mouse Guard more often that I had the other days, folks even came back to have me sign copies the bought the day before. People were coming to the table saying ‘I heard about your book for this booth or that booth, I have to have one’. Had a few more commissions, the people who want me to do the Mouse Guard Trade paper back came back and bought the painted cover to the book and an unpublished Mouse Guard piece. They said the cover was going to be framed and displayed in their store.

My Saxon sculpture didn’t survive the con. But I’m sure I can fix him. (Funny the Hellboy sculpture I did also took a tumble Monday night so I have to open Petersen’s sculpture repair shop soon)

At last count, I only have about 20 copies of the Mouse Guard left. I will be offering them to friends, family, and the folks on the Hellboy board who gave me some big pushes over that last six months.

The final icing on the cake is a review I was sent Monday morning from a man who liked the book:
http://www.talkaboutcomics.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=233

I am amazed and how blessed I am.

edit: e-mail me if you want a Mouse Guard book and or a Ye Old Lore of Yore. They are $3 each +$2 for shipping. I can accept paypal. I have about 15 copies of Mouse Guard that i can sell at the moment, but Comixpress.com should have it in their online store soon, and I'll be reordering sometime this week or next. So if you miss out, there are lots of future chances.

Congratulations! I'm so happy that you were so rewarded for the insane amount of work you put in for the con (up until 5AM? Uncle Jonathan's corn-cob pipe!)

I can't wait to see these books!

Great news, David! Its good to hear that you got so much attention at the con, its about time! It was good to know you before you become a superstar and have no time for us anymore! :D

I've never heard of Redwall before, but I know what its like to sit behind a table at a con and have people thumb through my book and make comparisons to other books. It sounds like many more people got into your book than those who were dismissive about it, so screw the naysayers!

What's this Hellboy sculpture you mentioned? Do you have a picture you can post?

Thank you folks.

John: It's one I did a while ago based on the panel from CW when Hellboy is blocking the machine gun fire with the RHoD:

currently the RHoD has a broken thumb, and is seperated from his arm just below the elbow. head is also cracked around the neck.

Great news aboout the con, David. You are talented and very hard working so it's great to hear that things went so well. That review is awesome and so is the news about being published. Do you think you will somehow try to present it in standard comic book proportions?

Gary:
The news is that I have the offer for the future (once I have enough material for a trade paper back.) Just be be clear, nothing is certain as of yet.

I plan on doing the next book 8" square as well. reformatting it would 1stly be a killer to do. I woul dhave to do a lot of redrawing ala Mignola's the Vorloc. 2ndly, I think the square has a lot of charm and it got a lot of positive response. It set it apart from things around it.

gary bolt
05-17-2005, 02:07 PM
Well, it's still fantastic news. :D

I respect your wanting to maintain the square format and I quite like the look of it. The publishers had some good rationale for considering the change, though. You could probably make the changes with grace and style. Maybe a strip along the bottom, ala Guy Davis' BPRD covers. Or a single frame narrative in the corner that becomes a flip animation when you thumb the pages.

I can’t wait to get my mitts on a real copy of Mouse Gaurd.

Yaaay David - I'm so glad it went well for you. I think 8x8 sounds really strong and I agree you should stick to it. Awesome review! That must feel so good. Well deserved praise indeed. We are looking forward to our copy. Now get some sleep for heavens sake!

photos. as always we forgot to take phots at the right time. These were taken at the end of the Convention Sunday. That is why the tables behind us are cleared out.

My setup: Mouse Guard figures (display only) Ye Old Lore of Yore books, Mouse Guard books, Original mouse Guard pages, portfollio with original paintings & drawings & 'Yore' Pages, standing portfollio with prints

Jeremy's setup: On the far left is his friend Warren, who set up with original paintings and sculptures Fri and Saturday, but only brought paintings Sunday. Jeremy's book Phantom Corp., Original work & prints in portfollio, Jeremy's really cool cuff bracelets, and Ye Old Lore of Yore.

Swag Show & Tell:

I have some wonderful new pieces from the Motor City Con (I am a veeerrryy lucky man!)

Aquired a really cool elf sketch from Vince Locke (http://vincelocke.com/). He has done work for Wizards of the Coasts' Dugeons & Dragons and I love his fantasy work!

Also got a sketch from my best friend Jesse Glenn, an homage to the Mouse Guard.

Some Guy Davis Pages: BPRD PoF, and two nevermen pages with fave villan: Honshu!

Enjoy!!

Yay, they came today! David, absolutely beautiful work all around! Mouse Guard is absolutely beautiful. I'm still in awe of your inks. I'm sorely tempted to buy one of those pages off of you, but I have to see if I can manage to scrape some extra money together through commissions first though.

Ye Old Lore of Yore is great too. You and Jeremy are both incredibly talented.

Let me just hand you a HUGE congratulations on such a successful con!

The preview pages I've seen of Mouse Guard I adore; truly wonderful inks in there, and such endearing characters! You've worked really hard to get where you are right now and deserve every ounce of renown you've obtained.

[I hope to get my hands on a copy of both Mouse Guard and Ye Old Lore of Yore when I can.. perhaps at the MCCC?]

I know I've been virtually non-existant on this board.. things have been all over the place and around again for me, but I hope to remedy that soon: you didn't give me that piece of art for nothing and I don't break my word! :D

Squeek! I received my copy of Mouse Guard also. As with all good stories it ended too soon. I'm pleased to know future installments are in the works.

My wife and I read it together before we drifted off to sleep. Each turn of the page was met with "Aw, look at those little cute feet." and "Beautiful artwork."

What brave little mice. A mouse traitor? Naw, I smell a hamster. I never did trust hamsters.

Wonderfully done Petersen!

I'm wondering who else got pages. It would surprize me again if no other Hellboarders jumped on them. I must say that I'm totally fascinated with these pieces. Not that they're not wonderful in the comic but the originals are really incredible. Yaay That's a beaut Ose! If I'd gone to five that one (or possibly 15) would've been it! I think T-wyrm will be jealous though. It has Saxon jumping into the snake nest like a berserker mouse - seems up his alley!

I haven't mentioned the story I realize. The art is so strong but a big part of why these are so compelling is their attachment to the narrative. It's really nicely written. A good story that I'm looking forward to the next issue of - regardless of the art! so there!
