I've been meaning to poke around this thread and look at all your art, Petersen. Now that I've finally gotten around to it - gorgeous stuff! It's just no use the piece is too small. I ran out of time and had to start my day in the hot shop. Stupid crappy camera.

Took a break from ASoH after finishing 2 more panels this morning...

thought about doing a hellboy piece...
here was step 1:

Petersen
08-08-2004, 02:07 PM
and then transfered it to watercolor paper (Although I think this is Printmaking paper I bought for something else...but it works)

and put down color.....
I muddyed up the RHoD some...but I will try to add some small dark shadows to make it 'pop' a bit...

Hells Orc
08-08-2004, 02:37 PM
I always enjoy water colored pictures, that looks just fantastic, I’d have to say the RHOD looks just fine, but I’m not any sort of hard art critic either, but I know what I like. I like how you included the steps as well; I was planning on doing some water colored sketches of Hellboy. Just for the fun of it, since I just started using them a few months ago. Great work as always though…

(On a side note, I’m sorry that I hadn’t gotten back to your last letter sooner, been away and…well been lazy. Hoping to do that before the end of today.)

Petersen
08-08-2004, 05:34 PM
I have added in the background tones.

The rocks have a light grey wash and I have applied a liquid mask to the spiral designs (that is why they look a little yellow..it's the mask) I will darken them and add texture. When that is dry, the mask will be removed to reveal the light grey spiral patern.

here is step 3...ooh and the pizza just showed up! yay!

JohnThompson
08-08-2004, 06:01 PM
David, this new watercolor of Hellboy is looking great, and has a nice feel of Mignola's painted work. I for one don't think it needs to have the extra level of ink-outlined paint strokes of your recent style of work (if that is something you have planned for this piece). It is beautiful how it looks now.

Thanks for sharing the progress pics.

Petersen
08-08-2004, 08:22 PM
I planned on doing the ink work...but I have been liking it 'as is' also...the ink work would help the RHoD and some of the eges of things (hellboy's shoulder, the rocks, etc...)

Still figuring out what to do with the sword...right now planning on going dark

btw: the scans are washed out compared to the painting..the yellow is'nt so chiffon and highlighter colored, but subtle with some peachey spots
step 4:

With or without ink work, it rocks! Seriously.

JohnThompson
08-08-2004, 10:08 PM
And done....I think....yes..yes done...er...or should I do the ink work...arg!!

step 5: finished?
Its finished. you don't need the ink lines, let the paint work show. The way each layer of color lays against the previous layer, and the subtleties of the different paint densities is a hallmark of watercolor art, and will be in part destroyed if each stroke is outlined in ink.

Here's a trick you can try if you really think it needs the ink work:

Get a piece of clear wet-media acetate (should be available in the sketchbook section of a good art store) and ink on that. You can easily lift the acetate flap to see the changes before and after the ink, then decide if its really necessary.

08-08-2004, 10:13 PM

08-08-2004, 10:21 PM
wow that's so kool. I love seeing the process. The drawing is really beautiful - I always love the drawings. It's a strong composition... I love the pose and the details on the rocks. The yellow background is very acidic on this monitor, it's a bit scary but as you say the scan isn't true. A lovely piece.. gorgeous work!

JohnThompson
08-08-2004, 10:24 PM
I planned on doing the ink work...but I have been liking it 'as is' also...the ink work would help the RHoD and some of the eges of things (hellboy's shoulder, the rocks, etc...)
I felt I had to comment on this. True, an ink outline would obviously divide the shoulder from the background, or give definition to the stone hand, but...

The way the shoulder merges/blends with the background is what is called a "lost edge", and makes the image more interesting by blurring the boundaries between foreground and background. Your brain knows there are two different object planes there and mentally makes the connection, imagining the outline. But, leaving the area undefined leaves the viewer with some ambiguity or mystery. On a literal level you wonder if the shoulder is smoking or shrouded in mist, burned out by the sun's glare, etc. On a more subconscious level it creates an emotional response that adds to the atmosphere of the piece.

Don't ink.

To my eye, what looks unfinished is the hillside. If the rocks are so grey it seems like the hillside would be at least an intermediate value.

morna

The rhod has tons of definition as is...I like that the shoulder is glaring it suggests the intensity of the sun. The hillside being undefined I think is ok - it helps with the depth and the atmospheric feeling of the piece...but the rock there - which is in sharper definition than the foreground rocks seems a contradiction to me.

I'm going to test Tad's wrath and disagree. The contrast between the rocks and hillside looks good to me. If you slightly deepened the the color in lowest part of the sky, it would give more definition to the highlighted top of the background hills and give it more strength. The same with deepening the tone of the hills where they meet the foreground rocks would define that edge better without darkening the entire hill.

DAMN! They're both nice. I love the sword one... it has Hb's tail (love the tail) and I'm a sucker for strong diagonals. I love the atmosphere too. The new one, HBstone, is also quite beautiful. Easier colours to live with perhaps and definitely more typically Petersenny with the ink contours...great little skull on the door. Can't wait to see both finished.

Petersen, you have a gift. When I first looked at your "lines" image it didn't do much for me. But then I remembered what my old design teacher used to say in college - "squint with your eyes". The patches of parallel lines resolve into lines and shadow when I take off my glasses. Awesome image of hellboy. I'm also blown away by your posting of older wood cuts. Sir Edward: Thank you very much! What type of design class were you taking? are you in the graphic arts field? Other than the prints on my website, there arn't many moe worth showing. I think I have one at my Mom's house, but no photographs of it.

Cure: The line thing was an experiment..I have played with that texture/line play before (check the backgrounds of Mouse and Cardinal and Maddie & the Monster books on my site. Just thought I could use it to show planes and positive/negative spaces..While I'm not as happy with it as the experiment of the watercolor technique I am using, it might be worth doing more of.

Hells Orc: I like switching things up...it's one of the reasons I have such a hard time drawing a book...by the time I should be 'hitting my stride' I instead feel like switching gears/genres/styles/etc.

Hellsaint: Rather have the mice in the garden than in the house! And the Pumpkins are a small price to pay for the services they provide.

PsycoFire: While I enjoy artwork that requirews some work...I think that the viewer has to work too hard at this one, for very little reward.

Morna: Glad you didn't miss those guys. They hang in the room where my Nieces sleep when they come to stay with us. The story behind the piece is that a print professor invited me as part of a show in a local gallery..the theme was 'Zoo' So I came up with a bunch of fictional animals, printed it and called it extinct...well the show had dropped the theme a few weeks after anouncing the show so I was the only one with a piece about animals..

I went to Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design near Toronto and majored in glass. That's where I met my wife, Morna. We actually started glassblowing on the same day (back in 1983). Our design teacher was an eccentric slave driver from Austria named Gernot Dick and he really changed how I see the world around me and how I look at art.

I realize this, but it's still neat.

And what's wrong with sharpies?
Sharpies, and almost all markers unless specified, are susceptible to fading over time. Some will continue to bleed into the surrounding paper long after the marker has dried. I have some story pages I had used a Sharpie to quickly fill in large black areas of the art, and after several months the marker ink bled a bright pink through all the stacked pages.

Years ago, I bought a sketch from an artist at Chicago Comicon. He used a marker to ink the art, but didn't like an area so he used some white-out and re-inked over it. Again, months later the original marker bled up through the white-out, making the sketch look like crap.

Markers are fine, but are not good for anything you want to keep for a long time.

Jelly Meets Jam
08-21-2004, 09:31 PM
I neva knew, do Pantone markers do this? I use alot of them.

Athena
08-23-2004, 10:39 AM
I ain't no artist, and it's a long time ago since I did this, so it might not work. If you want to know if a pen is going to bleed, then you will need to do this. Get the following things:
1. A piece of decent absorbent paper (coffee filter?) cut into a long rectangle
2. A glass filled with about 1/2 cm of water.
3. Your pens.

Put a blob of the colours you want to test about 1 1/2 cm from the bottom of the piece of paper, and about 3 cm from each other (on the long side and make sure there is enough to roll it into a cylinder shape without any of the colours overlapping). Put the paper into the glass with the water in it making sure it's in a cylinder shape so that it rests against the glass and doesn't come unfurled. The water should be sucked up by the filter paper, and if the pens aren't any good, the colours that make up the pen colour will reveal themselves like MAGIC! in lttle feathery bits.
I guess the marker turned pink because the white out made the paper damp.
It might work, it might not, whaddo I know?
You've got nothing to lose, and it could be BIG FUN!

I don't know about the bleeding, but Pantone and any other graphic design or art markers are dye-based, not pigmented colors. They will fade over time when exposed to light. The colors will fade much quicker if the art is hung in direct sunlight.

These markers are meant to create color studies and comps, not to create a permanent piece of art.

Umm.... no idea. Not quite sure what you mean by that.

The only markers I use anymore are the pigmented ink ones made by Sakura under the name "Pigma". The markers come in a variety of tip sizes, and they also offer a flexible tipped "brush" marker. Not much variety of colors, but the ink is waterproof and fadeproof. If I want to color a piece I use only colored pencils, paint, or Photoshop. Too many bad marker experiences here.

I meant that I come up with this high-falutin' explanation of checking pens, and then you just come up with the answer.

Tell me, John, is it better to be taught than to learn? Is it better to love or be loved in return?

(gotta turn Fitzs' "Best of the 80s'" CD off...)

It is better to give than to receive. It is better to have loved and lost than never have loved. It is better to be upwind when Otto is around. That's about all I know....

To know a thing's name is to have power over that thing.

Sir David Petersen... it would be nice if you could give us a piece of art so that we may get back on topic.

Alright,

After a lovely visit to Mr. Guy Davis', I have been trying to crank out work for a book to have ready by the October Motor City Con (aka Novi) He is very kind and supportive!

So here is a re-worked version of Fir Darrig, an Irish Fay folk who will be the title character.

The ears are my favorite part, as well as the smug expression.

What a fun little dude. Are you going to do a model sheet for him?

Grabed an acrylic painting that I was never happy with (it was to be a christmas exchange piece, but didn't cut it for me) and scaned it. It's the prize for the new wordless art contest...

while I had it digitized though, I played with it in photoshop, using filters to make it look more like my recent work..so here is the 1st one o these done digitaly:

you can see how it originaly looked in the wordless comic contest thread

I liked the original version more. This one feels too "filtery" for me. It's still awesome, though.

Hi Petersen...

Morna got your package a couple of days ago. The painting is smaller than my brain envisioned (8.5 x 4.25") but somehow that is a plus with this piece. Maybe it's because your watercolours with inked outlines have a stained glass feeling when I look at them (plus when viewed on a monitor they are literaly back lit) but I've always seen your pieces as quite large. This piece is quite intimate in scale and is somehow precisely rendered while lacking detail. So far I like it more every day I look at it. The drawing rocks too.

Thanks for doing the trade with Morna.

Gary

Morna,
Post Office left a note saying that they didn't leave the package because they needed me to sign...I think I can get it from them tomorrow..I'm anxious!!!

Here is a drawing that took control of me. As many of you know, I am working on the Amazing Screw on Head backup story for the Fan-Comic of Lobster Johnson. And many of you know that I also have another comitment for 4 pages due in a little over a week.....so what am I doing???? Drawing a Faire that has nothing to do with either project. bah!

It's now 5+ hrs since I have been home and all I have done is screw with a light box I borrowed, clean up dog puke and this....

I'm getting nagity nags from myself and the folks who are a part of my other comitment.

Ruta has been nothing but pleasant with her correspondance...

and I still want that whole project to roll out all together..perhaps on a Wed (New Comic Day)
