Hey guys/

One DC character I have always had a strange fascination with is Darkseid. I dunno why, he has just always gripped me as the Doctor Doom of DC and I love that he is moving back into the fore with the Countdown. TO bring me up to speed since I don#t have many old non-Flash comics, I was wondering if someone could bring me up to date on the best Darkseid comic books to purchase to know more about the character? I'm aware he makes an appearance in a recent Superman/Batman but other than that my knowledge is VERY shady. I was thinking about pikcing up the old Kirby Fourth World trades, but I'd appreciate it if someone could advise me what other stories they'd rank as Darkseid's BEST, and if they're available in trade- it can be with the JLA, Superman or whoever, I'm open.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if I would consider it his best...but some appearances:

The Cosmic Odyssey

Genesis

and then there's also a run during Morrison's run early on in JLA. The story arc was called Rock of Ages (issues 10-15) where Darkseid has found the Anti-Life Equation and become absolute ruler of Earth

To me, Darkseid's greatest stories are in the DC Animated cartoons:

"Apokolips.... NOW!" from Superman: The Animated Series, which sort of explains the entire "Fourth World" thing better then alot of comics actually do! This is, in my opinion, the best that Darkseid has ever been.

Also, "Legacy" , the Superman Animated Series finale. In this episode, he says the most badass line ever spoken in a cartoon: "I am many things, Kal-El, but here... I am God."

His other appearances are great too, as are his apperances in Justice League, but these are the cream of the crop. They are available on DVD.

Outside of Kirby's stuff in New Gods, I'd say check out "The Great Darkness Saga" in Legion, "Rock of Ages" in JLA, and Walt Simonson's Orion. Other than that, he's been mishandled, more often than not.

The Great Darkness Saga TPB (Legion of the Super-Heroes)

Action Comics #600 (guest starring Wonder Woman)

Crisis On Infinite Earths TPB (Darkseid helps kill the Anti-Monitor indirectly), guest starring everyone!

Definitely Great Darkness and Simonson's run on Orion, although the book gets far better after Orion's big blow out with Darkseid at the beginning of the series (issues 1-5). Darkseid comes off even better when he's a bit desperate, operating behind the scenes.

Another vote for The Great Darkness Saga. It's ironic that this is the story that really put Darkseid on DC's map, given that LSH is outside of the main DC continuity by a thousand years.

Another vote for the Great Darkness Saga. I mean it has it all inculding Darksied taking on the entire Legion plus Superboy and Supergirl single handed. A truly great story.
And I will also second the Orion series. I am not even a really big fan of the New Gods, but Simonson wrote them fantasticly. It was the same level of greatness as his Thor run I thought.

Yep, I agree with all here.

1. Kirby's New Gods stuff. Start there, if you can.

(No particular order for anything after #1)

2. Walt Simonson's Orion

3. The Great Darkness Saga

4. Cosmic Odyssey

5. Rock of Ages (JLA)

There are a lot of other good ones, but these really stand out as some of the best.

I've got to throw a yet another vote at The Great Darkness Saga.

It was both Darkseid's and the Legions finest moment.

For a funny take on ol' Stone Face, I also recommend the Son of Ambush Bug mini from the late 80's.

The only post Crisis thing I can think of is that Orion series (that was just awesome). Beyond that, his showings have largely been Superman job fests.

In general, ANYTHING New God related is a solid read. And it usually has some Darkseid thrown in there.

Rock of Ages (JLA) and The Great Darkness Saga (Legion of Super-Heroes).

Darkseid also was pretty badass in the DnA Legion, too.

Also that storyline where he made Superman his "son" in Byrne's run.

The Timm-verse episodes, which are all great.

I loved in the recent Firestorm arc where he appeared and ripped Prof Stein right out of the Firestorm merger...
