I have just recently got a new job in which I decided to not have sick pay, but get paid a much higher rate. Just last week I got real sick and for the past 2 days i have been unable to work, and it looks like I've got tonsillitus so i may be out for a further week. Guess what?!?! To top it all off I have bidded on about $500 worth of comics ebay relying on the money to come through, and it looks like im going to win the bids. So not only am I sick, but im broke and also I'm going to get a few strikes from ebay for not paying for my items, which in turn will most probably leave me suspended.
Lucky i still live at home with the folks. :(

Awww man.
You live here in West Aus and you took a job without sick pay.
@#$%ing industrial relations changes.
....
I am really sorry this happened to you, but please remember this next time you get a job.
And vote.

In the future, try to build up a "rainy day fund" for when you get sick or lose your job. It should be at least enough to live on for 3 months, preferably more. If and when you need to dip into your savings, be sure to replace it as soon as you're able. Living paycheck to paycheck may be fine when things are going well, but nothing lasts forever. Making do with a bit less now can save your butt down the road.

Why in god's name would you bid five hundred dollars on an auction when you obviously don't have enough funds to comfortably cover it?
Let that be a lesson learned, don't make huge, dumb purchases if you don't have the disposable income.

He said he decided to take a higher wage instead of sick pay. I took that to mean the employer offered him a choice.

Yeah, I got that.
The thing is, that system is actually very recent here. Up untill recently employers needed to offer sick pay.
We have different ideals here generally when it comes to employment conditions.

I get my sick pay in my hourly rate.
I prefer it that way, because I can take time off for whatever I want.

As for advice, it sounds like you have to plead with your ebay bidders and throw yourself at their mercy.
$500 though? I make a lot of money (I'd be embarrassed to say how much) and there's no way I'd spend $500 on comics. I don't even think I spend $500 in a year . . If I do . . it's just around $500.

Vote Labor.
On a more practical level, if you contact the sellers immediately and explain the situation you can probably get them to agree to cancel the transactions.
Other than EBay do you have other significant bills?

Sounds like what you need is somebody who wants to buy $500 worth of comics (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=4825313) from you.

When I was in fourth grade, I was cast as the narrator of the church's Easter passion play, which meant I pretty much had the only speaking part as everyone else just walked along. To top it off, at the end we had to run around the church singing. And a couple days before the big affair, I got bronchitis.
Did I wuss out?
Nope. I got my fourth-grade ass in there and did the whole thing... and promptly couldn't speak for the next couple days.
So drag your ass out and go to work. Tough it out.
OR ... don't bid on things if you don't really have money.

Well, I'm glad you live with your folks. It's a shame about the timing- it's just about the worst possible, isn't it?
I hope you feel better soon (and that it's not tonsillitis- urk!)

Depending on your job, see if your boss will let you come in for half days, or work from home if possible.
I agree that it would be a good idea to notify your Ebay people ASAP - just be honest. See if they can contact the next highest bidder to work something out with that person, OR see if they would be willing to wait a week or two to send out your lot and you'll pay them then as well. You could offer to add a little more to the bid as interest, IF you'd be able to pay it.
They would probably much rather work something out than to get stuck with a finished auction and have to try to track you down and THEN you tell them you won't be able to pay.
