View Full Version : Do you like the two stories in one format of Mystery In Space, etc?

Mystery In Space and Tales Of The Unexpected have now wrapped up, and DC will be doing at least two more books with the same format - Countdown to Adventure and a book featuring Dr. Fate with the title that has not yet been revealed.

Do you like the format of these books - 2 stories for a cover price of $3.99 (I'm going to risk making the assumption that the new titles will be similarly priced). Do you think it's a good way to showcase lower-tier characters who might have a hard time carrying a title on their own?

If you do like the format, any suggestions for future installments?

I definitely would love an anthology series with rotating artists and writers, as I mentioned on an earlier post. If it were based around space characters (Adam Strange, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Captain Comet, etc), I'd be all over it. Although again, as I posted earlier, I'd prefer if the stories were independent of one another and intertwined seldomly. I didn't like how both stories in Mystery in Space were connected to each other. I'd rather have them seperate so we could see more of the space DCU.

When 52 kicked off, I thought the format was awesome, not just because of the weekly release, but because of the rotating cast and roster of creators. It was almost an anthology title. Then Mystery in Space and Tales of the Unexpected started, and they were great- especially Mystery. If DC decided to start up more anthology books, I'd love it, and so long as they were great, I wouldn't mind the $3.99 cover price.

I like the format. Unfortunately it runs the risk of potentially have one story that's not good and one story that is good. The Tales of the Unexpected was like this. I didn't like the Spectre story, but absolutely loved the Dr. 13 back-ups. But I always felt it was a waste of money to buy a $4 book for the back-up. And when I heard the rumor about the Dr. 13 back-ups being collected in a trade, I immediately dropped Tales.

So, if DC is going to continue this format (and I hope they do) hopefully both stories will be good.

And it sounds like the "Countdown to.." books will be good.

Also, I think DC has the right idea of starting out with mini-series to test the waters before putting out ongoings.

It depends on the talent. Mystery in Space was brillant, and it certainly expanded on DCU Space heroes. Is this Countdown to Adventure the so called sequel they said was coming? Cause I'm not really interested, Though I love Adam Strange and Animalman, I'll see how it looks when it comes out or preview pages.

I think if you can tell two related stories, as with Mystery in Space, it's a great idea. I think Tales of the Unexpected told two such wildly different tales that a lot of people probably felt like they were buying a story they didn't like to get one they did, although which one they liked probably varied.

Ditto on dropping the book. Hopefully DC does keep this format and will also do trades in a similar fashion in case one part is crap, as in ToU.

If handled the way MIS was, then I think this format could definitely be a winner, but there has to be an underlying theme or story thread that weaves through both stories.

This two stories format definitely has my support. I hope to see more stories like this in the future. Maybe even a L.E.G.I.O.N/Lobo story.......
