I've become really interested in the character of Ice recently. She was dead when I came back to reading comics in the late 90s. I've checked her Wiki article and it was helpful, but does anyone have suggestions for great Ice appearances I should track down?

Cay, you have to get the Giffens JLA issues. A lot of Ice and a lot of the Ice/Fire friendship. Including the big crush that Guy Gardner had for her.

She died in that big crossover between all the JL books sometime before Zero Hour. She was a really great character.

Ice and Fire were members of the Global Guardians before joining the JL. I think they joined in Justice League International #14. At the time, the team was formed by Batman, Mr. Miracle, Oberon, Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter and Booster Gold.

Hi Cay! Like Hi-Fi said, the Giffen Era is a great place to read stories about Ice. I reccomend the 2 issues that deal with Ice going on dates with Guy Gardner. I'll try to track down the issue numbers for you. I also reccomend picking up the run of Justice League Quarterly, as a lot of them had Fire & Ice stories. Lots of character development in that series for a lot of members of the JLA. Also check out JLA Classified 4-9 which has an Ice subplot and one of the most heartbreaking single page images I have ever seen. Oh, and during Jurgens rn on JLA, right after breakdowns, there is an interesting subplot that deals with Ice's hero worship of Superman. And the crossover where she died was called Judgement Day. it was 9 issues and it ran through Justice League America, Justice League International and Justice League Task Force. Just before that crossover, there is also a story arc in JLA that deals with Ice fighting to free her kingdom from her evil brother. All worth checking out.

You actually won't find any Ice appearances in old Global Guardians stories though. That was Sigrid Nansen, Ice Maiden. Ice was sort of retconned into Global Guardians history. (Well, actually she was supposed to be Ice Maiden, but Keith Giffen wasn't aware that Sigrid already had a name--and renamed her character Tora Olafsdotter. But after Ice died, they brought back the original Sigrid Ice Maiden and established that they were different characters)

To me, the definitive Ice storyline took place in Justice League International Quarterly #5, where she takes on Professor Ivo. It's the perfect story of who Ice is, why she was loved by fans, and what she contributed to the League.

didn't she just come back in B.O.P?

I would agree with that. Besides Ice having a central role in the Ivo story, there's also a Fire & Ice tale in JLQ #5. As has been mentioned the JLQ run up to about #12 has alot of really great Ice stories. I would also suggest all the stuff from the Giffen run continuing through the Jurgens stuff to include the Funeral for a Friend issues. Her crush on Superman and seemingly limitless compassion were very key to her characterization.

I'll also mention a JLE tale that she isn't in a whole lot, but it's a very cool story and she gets a chance to shine. It's the Starro storyline in JLE #26-28; Ice doesn't show up until #28, but you should really read the whole thing, it's one of the better interpretations of Starro.

Yeah, although she hasn't regained consciousness yet. Maybe it'll happen in next week's issue.

Get those issues dedicated to the Guy Gardner/Ice dates. Those are fantastic !

Justice League America #28 - "A date with Destiny" : Guy's first date with Ice and he took her to watch a porno , black hand shows up and hilarity ensures. :D

Justice League America #45 - "A date with Destiny II" : the 2nd date , Ice brought guy to the Ice Capist and when Blue beetle & Kilowog caught wind of it , they played a prank on guy gardner. It's damn hilarious.

Justice League Quarterly #4 - it's a backup story but in the issue , guy finally declares his love for Ice.

Then you should get "I can't believe it's not the justice league" , it has a sad moment involving ice when they tried to bring her soul back from hell.

Seconded! The Starro storyline definitely crossed my mind as well.

I hope that BOP's current storyline is paving the way for Ice's reintroduction to the DCU. That said, I don't want her to be brought back and then she gets shuffled off right to limbo where no one does anything with her.

Its about time Ice came back - hopefully she will retain her powers from just before she died. Yes I third that JLQ issue 5 - great Ice issue and great art from Mike McKone. Maybe we will get another Justice League title with the remains of the funny JL, I still miss them all and J'onn's at a loose end too.

Wouldn't that be wonderful? J'onn, Fire, Ice, Booster, Metamorpho and Dr. Light, together again! Heck I'd even throw in the new Blue Beetle! I miss them.

IIRC, Sigrid was skinned in a JSA Classified story starring Dr Midnite.

JLA after Giffen and before Morrison is just about unreadable. You won't find any good Ice stories there. The crush on Superman was silly and the Overmaster story where she dies was just really, really terrible.

Stick to the Giffen stuff. I think Waid might have written a few decent JL Quarterly stories, too. But anything Ice-related not done by Giffen or Waid is probably not something you're going to enjoy.

There are some horrid horrid stories out there. But I thought that for the most part, Dan Jurgens successfully took the "Bwahahaha League" and integrated them into serious stories. He kept the humor with Booster and Beetle but also did a great job with showing everyone that they could be kick ass when they needed to be. His run was fine until Doomsday pretty much broke apart his team and DC got crazy with JL spinoffs again.

Booster/Beetle/Fire/Ice vs. Starbreaker? Awesome!
Blue Beetle vs. Weapons Master? One of Ted's best moments.
Destiny's Hand? One of the Top 10 Best JL stories ever, in my opinion.

I agree with you , i enjoyed Jurgen's JLA , his was the closest to a return of the big guns way before Morrison's JLA after DC had retcon out Superman ever being a member of the JLA , in my view , he was successful of intergrating the members of giffen's joke league of america into a more serious tone. His use of classic silver age JLA villains were pretty cool too - as mentioned , the destiny's hand storyline was fantastic.

Unfortunately , the writers who took over from him was just awful. Dan Vado specifically wanted to get rid of superman from the JLA because he felt superman was too powerful and then Gerald Jones run was equally dreadful.

There's a fun little "team-up" between Ice and the female Dr. Light written by Kim Fryer in Justice League Quarterly #12. This little gem features early art by Mike Wieringo. :)

Buy all of the Keith Giffen & J.M. Dematteis Justice League/Justice League International/Justice League America; she is a primary character throughout with Fire.

Man, with a character like Ice it makes us show a different side to the always tough Guy Gardner, here is hoping that Geoff or Gail could reunited them, either in BOP, before Gail's run ends, or during the Sinestro Corps event, because you know the old saying of having the most brightest moments during the most darkest times. :D

To me, the greatest challenge is finding good appearances of Ice that DON'T simultaneously inflict Guy Gardner on the reader.

I could've sworn she had her own, independent identity apart from making Gardner look human, once upon a time.
