Still, how hilarious would that comic be- surprise sodomy while Spider-Man's wife's doing his laundry for him? Dave Sim could write it!

Men like statues of women:
-with cleavage

The original version of the statue had her feet webbed to the floor in makeshift manacles, there was to be an add on of Spidey sitting on the couch hurling double entendres ( voice chip ).
"My spidey sense is tingling".
"Webb-ed bliss"
"Face it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot"
The M.J doll just giggles and says "I wuv you Tiger".
It is clearly cheesecake, clearly not an empowering image of femaledom, but, its not that bad, I can't think of anyone who would really want that in their house, but its not "that" offensive, if taken in an old fashioned ironic sort of a way.
Besides its either M.J or Aunt May doing his laundry, no way can Peter do it himself, he can barely figure out what costume to wear these days, how could he ever hope to wash it too ?

Well, I don't exactly see "Spiderman Loves Mary Jane" or "MJ 616" either.
Mary Jane is the love of Peter Parker's life. It all began with a blind date set up between Peter's Aunt May, and Mary Jane's Aunt Anna and, grew to become one of comic's most enduring love stories. Uninterested in dating any girl Aunt May might try to set him up with, Peter dodged several attempts to meet "that nice Watson girl next door." But when he finally came face to face with the gorgeous redhead, she not only took his breath away, but took the words right out of his mouth by uttering her now famous line, "Face it, Tiger... you just hit the jackpot." Eventually, she became not only his girlfriend, but also his wife. An actress and model herself, over the years Mary Jane has been there for Peter Parker to nurse his battle wounds, cheer his victories and protect his secrets.

What sells it for me is that she's barefoot.
Obviously, Spidey hid her shoes. Wife can't leave the house without her shoes.

Her chest has been enlarged to ridiculas proportions, her waist doesn't exsist, and she's bent over in a position that isn't natural for picking things up.

2. Make them think they're being selected for a special on the Food Network
A camera crew hangs out with them shooting footage.
3. Enter Bobby Flay to challenge them at their specialty(chili, burgers, chowder, whatever),
Dispelling the myth that someone actually just wanted to recognize them for their talent.
It all comes back to Flay. Screw all you hardworking people. No one wants to see you.
Let's have a THROWDOWN!!!
It really angers some of the contestants. I remember the guy for the donut "throwdown" was pissed.
Shitty idea for a show really.
Wow. I just found this. How terribly sad.
Then I found this. It almost makes up for it.

haha! :)
I laugh at the absurdity of how it fits better. Not the actual premise of spousal abuse. :(
He's a chef of an extremely successful restaurant. They can tend to be arrogant.

Plus, I think he developed more of the 'tude from his chillin' and grillin' show. They did a doc on him few weeks ago, and he was apparently told to be more confident and cocky to play off his more rural companion (actually his friend) on the show.
Remember, though they are on the show as themselves, they are all still kinda acting to play a part that would get audiences to watch their shows.
I have yet to eat at one of his places, but that's b/c they are so usually crowded, but I hear the food is wonderful. What I really wanna know is what happened between him and his former co-host Jackie. I thought she was hot and there's not much info on her on the net.

I've been thinking, i don't think this is sexist.
Her chest has been enlarged to ridiculas proportions, her waist doesn't exsist, and she's bent over in a position that isn't natural for picking things up.
However, given the addition of her washing clothes while looking like this, and even her being barefoot, i'm thinking it's not sexist, its....campy.
Even in order to balance herself she'd have to flex her thighs.
Also, the jeans, would never do that. If those were real you would see if she'd had her brazilian that month if she bent like that and the front would be all bunched up. Those style jeans are for standing not for bending.

Never ceases to amaze me that in a violent war torn impoverished world people can still get "up in arms" about a little gratuitous T&A. Y'know, war, injustice, poverty, gas-prices, bigotry, all that really pales in comparison to the over-sexualization of female comic characters. What I’ve meant to say about this to the people that seem to express bewilderment that some would be offended by this, think of it this way. They chose THIS VERY MOMENT to freeze into a statue. Of decades of comic images and with all the talent at their disposal, they chose a subservient laundry pose. Sure, sometimes women do laundry, even for their husbands, and maybe even sexily.
But that’s the moment they chose and it says something.
Sure, sometimes real black people really do eat fried chicken and watermelon, but if they chose that specific image to portray Luke Cage, it would be pretty much the same kind of offense.

MARY JANE IS SPIDEY 'SENSUOUS'
By NEIL GRAVES
May 16, 2007 -- Say, doesn't that comely babe - barefoot, buxom and scrubbing some laundry - look familiar?
Why, it's Spider-Man's better half, Mary Jane, and, wow, are the Webbed Wonder's fans steamed over this one.
Bloggers are scorching their keyboards, claiming that a statuette of Mary Jane, based on artist Adam Hughes' notion of a fantasy femme, is an eyeful of outrage.
Sporting sexy cleavage and a very exposed pink thong peeking out from tight jeans, Mary Jane is nobody's washerwoman, although she's bending over a tub scrubbing Spidey's iconic superhero gear.
The rendition has gotten so many catcalls that a Web observer, in a six-part outline, said enough already: Cease and desist.
"Devildoll" wrote on the site LiveJournal, "Okay, people. It's been six days and 750 comments and I'm not going to try to keep up anymore.
If you're here to comment about how much you dislike it, I agree with you and I thank you for commenting."
On Blogspot.com, under the title, "Mary Jane, the Other White Meat," a writer said, "The statue represents a big step backwards for those concerned about the state and future of comic books."
A disappointed Angie's electronic diary read, "Sorry but naah. It's a girl in some jeans holding a Spider-Man mask."
And an irate Canadian lass blogged, "I'd like a statue of Spider-Man doing his own damn laundry ... This is the worst thing I have ever seen."

yeah, I think some artists try and emulate too many 'hot girl pictures' from Maxix, Stuff and all the usual porn outlets. You see in one of the links, the slight similarity between MJ's pose and one by famed femme, Bettie Paige.
As for the x-men book, I didn't like it too much. A good idea, but Colleen was not used effectively and the stories were kinda, bleah. I much reather they bring back the x-men: Unlimited anthology which had some top rate ideas in it.

This is another moment that marks that I'm way out of the demographic for comics.
In the 80's, I was the market for the Watchmen and Grim N' Gritty and could catch the dark humor of the times and appreciate the tales behind the tales.
Now, as comics become more ridiculously violent and poorly written and the anime/Disney style has become more acceptable, I have noticed my purchase of TPB's and anthologies of Neal Adams work or Jack Kirby has become more frequent.

I'm more of the opinion that it was a carte blanche deal they gave to a woman artist they felt might pad readership a bit, drawn from Anime/Manga folk familiar with her work.
In that case, it would be terribly awesome if she just decided to draw something so easily construed as impending tentacle rape time just because she felt like it.

Winslow, you may not be seeing the connection, but it's a fairly obvious one, and it requires a minimal leap in logic to get there.
O.K., I am stupid . . .
But I've never read a tentacle rape/watched hentai in manga or anime form.
I guess the monster at the Mines of Moria was looking to bust Legolas hairless asshole . . . (Not being a jerk here, I don't get the whole association of tentacles as phallic objects, and drawing on another work)

My big question (beyond "Why don't they have nipples?") is why Black Cat, a master thief, has a bell on her neck. For sneaking?
I suppose it's a visual pun. She's been captured, and therefore her captors have belled the cat.

The fact that this is drawn in an obviously Japanese style is where the connection comes from, not just because it has a tentacle monster. Now you're being intentionally obtuse.

I'm not a tentacle expert, but I'd expect tentacles to be slimy...not in a sexy way..in a gross, suction cup, under muck and mire way.
Didn't get the phallic stuff there. Did get that there were some abundant breasts that were about to be popped free though....

According to The Beat, the artist on that cover is a Japanese woman. I'd wonder what went through her mind, but I bet it was "Marvel pay money! Money cover rent and food! ME WANT MONEY!".

That wasn't an Asian imitation. That was me saying that what went through the artist's mind was probably the uncomplicated and simple thought of "hey, paying work!" - I used Grimlock-speech because I thought it would work better for uncomplicated & simple thought processes, not because I'm seriously suggesting Japanese people think in broken English.

Right. I can't really get on Cho's case for drawing sexy, scantily clad women all the time, because he really knows what he's doing. And while it's often cheeky, it's never in what I'd consider to be poor taste.

That's a big reason why Cho is one of my favorite artists.
His women are smoking hot while still looking like they could actually exist. They have large breasts that look like they actually have gravity (like real breasts do), they have waists that actually look like they could contain internal organs (Michael Turner, I'm looking in your direction) and they have realistic muscle definition when a character calls for it.
Outside of his women, his art just has a very clean look that appeals to me on the same level that seeing a perfectly-green manicured lawn does.

In the case of the Mary Jane statue...there is no case. This is no more sexist that any cover with Superman, Batman, Captain America (Most any male super hero of your choice) standing on the cover with his muscles all flexed and nearly busting out of his spandex.
[...]
Why is it that no one really raises any kind of fuss because all super hero males are built like greek Gods? People whine and complain about Lois Lane being built like a Barbie Doll, but they say nothing about Superman being built like an Adonis.
This is a stupid argument. First of all, images of male superheroes are not designed for the specific purpose of titillating female readers. Superman is not specifically intended as a sex object for female readers to ogle. Mary Jane, on the other hand, is often depicted in a way that specifically appeals to male readers' sexual instincts. The Mary Jane statue is sexualized in a way that the cover of the latest Superman comic isn't.
Second, even if superhero comics do depict both men and women in sexist ways, sexist depictions of women in superhero comics are more harmful than sexist depictions of men. The vast majority of superhero comics fans are heterosexual males (I don't actually have evidence for this claim, but it seems intuitively obvious). Therefore, sexist images of women will have a stronger effect on readers than sexist images of men. Readers will be likely to ignore the fact that Superman is drawn in a sexist way, simply because he doesn't appeal to their sexual predilections. But a sexist depiction of Elektra or Mary Jane will naturally have a stronger effect on a male heterosexual reader, and will help him to form negative perceptions of women in general.
The above was all just off-the-cuff, but simply by virtue of the fact that I was able to come up with these arguments, we can see that this issue is a lot more complex than Beau claims.
I get the impression that Beau didn't put a lot of thought into his comments.

I don't think I've EVER seen a male superhero depicted in a suggestive, oversexualized way on any official Marvel publication. Only in fanfic.
I think a good example of the difference would be similar to the difference between the portrayals of Counselor Troi in "Star Trek the Next Generation" and of T'Pol and her naked decontamination oil rub downs in "Star Trek: Enterprise".
Troi, though being the show's hot chick and wearing spandex, is seldom if ever, used in a cheesecake or overtly sexual way to titilate the viewer. T'Pol on the other hand was used constantly this way.
So yes, Namor may have the body of Mr. Universe and be wearing next to nothing, but the guy is so damn chaste and professional and unsexual, even when he's hitting on Sue Richards.
In fact, the only male equivalent of the way female characters are sometimes portrayed in comics that I can ever remember seeing is this picture that popped up on the internet a little while back. And I think after looking at it, the difference will be quite obvious:
