View Full Version : When did The Batman stop sucking?

I've never been a gigantic Batman fan, but I still checked out the first episode of "The Batman" to see how it held up to Timm's old show. I knew the show was aimed towards a younger audience, which made sense. As much as I loved the whole Timmverse series of DC cartoons, they did seem to be skewing older and older with each year.
Anywho, I was not impressed in the slightest by that first episode of The Batman. Didn't really strike me as a very interesting take on Batman or even one that felt like Batman to me. Remove the Batcostume and re-name the protagonist and it could have been any number of generic kids cartoons out there. When I heard that they were going to be reintroducing the Justice League in the latest season finale, I decided to check it out to see whether the show had made any improvements.
Boy, did it ever. Batman was actually acting like Batman. There was a nice New Frontier homage with J'Onn J'Onzz and the writing was considerably more interesting and appeared, to me anyways, to be geared towards both kids and adults.
So, to those of you who never gave up on the show or those of you who hated the show but kept watching anyway, when exactly did the quality improve? Is this a recent thing or did the first episode just suck and I should have kept watching?

i didn't think the 1st episode was great, but enjoyed the 1st season. i watch it with my son though so i'm not as critical as some people. i thought it was just a fun batman cartoon. the episode with bane in the 1st season was awesome.

I always thought it had potential. The show can be incredibly dark when not handicapped by censors (see Batman vs. Dracula).

What is Robin's 17th birthday party?

Don't quite understand why you mean by this. I found this Batman to be reminiscent of the early incarnation done by Messers Finger and Kane. In that Bruce is a nice guy. Not the arrogant SOB we have now in the comic books. Or who was in the 4th season of BTAS or the JLU. I found the characterisation more likeable.
I actually liked the show very much. That is until they added the kids. With the addition of Batgirl/Barbara Gordon in season 3 it reminded me a heck of a lot like a direct rip off of Veronica Mars/Nancy Drew. And the episodes I did catch of the 4th season on Youtube. It seemed as if they had turned Bruce into some tv sitcom Dad who spent more time supervising Robin and Batgirl than anything else.

I don't think it' the batman that sucked I think it's the fact that batman has been done to many times people are starting to get tired of Batman in general he's one dc character that is just overdone and overated to so some. Me personally I think he's a fairy cool character but dc needs to pull out more of the characters besides Batman and Superman.

Nothing I can put my finger on, just a general feeling. He just didn't feel like Bats to me. Given the homage to the Adam West show in the theme song, I can see what you're saying though. They were going for the angst-free, not-a-douche version of the character.

I gave up on Saturday morning cartoons a long time ago, because of this I didn’t even know their was a new Batman cartoon for a long time. After seeing what Joker looked like I decided to only watch the show if it was on while I was flipping channels. A while back I saw Cartoon Network was playing the Batman VS Dracula movie. All I will say about that is it was a big mistake.
Around the time that Superman’s new cartoon started I heard they were adding Robin to The Batman. I figured I would give both shows a chance and I was curious what Robin they were going to use. I was happy to find that they went with Dick because he is my favorite DC character and since than I have been watching both cartoons.
Although, I’m not sure why I watch the new Superman cartoon. It seems to be a showcase for lamest heroes I have ever seen. Bouncing Boy? The guy who can bite metal and has a tooth as his emblem. I think the only reason why I watch that show is to see what incredibly lame character they show of next. Sorry if I offended anyone that likes that show, but I honestly feel that nearly every single character I have seen in it has been a complete and very bad joke.

It actually stopped sucking at the beginning of this season. (The Robin episode, I think) The first season was pretty much unwatchable for me. I started watching it again with the Legion cartoon and there was remarkable improvement.

Pretty much the same story for me. After giving its first season a shot and being totally disenchanted with it, I began watching The Batman again starting with the Robin introductory episode, due in large part to Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill's guest spots. Since then I've thoroughly been enjoying it. And as much as I liked the two-part season finale, it was actually the future episode featuring Oracle and Nightwing that really changed my opinion of the series.

I missed that one and didn't even hear about it. Now I need to try and find that episode!

It's on youtube... but I didn't think it was as good as everyone claimed it was. I'm still unimpressed with the show.

Tired of Batman? Batman is the one character in DC that shines above the rest. He's got the great backstory, isn't COMPLETELY unstoppable like Superman, and is brilliant on every level. It's not like he's Wolverine or anything. He's actually interesting.

I'll have you know that Bouncing Boy and Matter Eater Lad (the guy who can bite metal and has a tooth as his emblem) are not lame, THEY ARE THE BEST SUPER-HEROES EVER!!!!!!!

I go back one year. It really picked up with the intro of Batgirl. As was the case with the lasr season of B:TAS, Babs makes a much more interesting animated foil for Bruce than Dick. I actually think this season is a bit of a step down from last season.
