Funny. I was reading until this arc, and dropped it because of Loeb's writing.

OMG, this Lupine retcon is so crap. Theoretically, if Logan is a lupine then so should his parents. His parents however, have not shown any signs of being lupine, and thus throwing of the theory.

I don't like the story, but the art is stunning, and I don't want that gap because after Loeb, there hopefully be someone good.

Actually, his parents wouldn't have shown any signs of being lupine, as both branches of humanity evolved to essentially the same hominid state. It's only in mutation that the lupine features manifest themselves. At least that seems like what Loeb is saying here.
Basically, if you're a mutant and you descended from the Lupine instead of apes, then your mutation will make you feral and animal-like. If you're a mutant and you came from apes, then your mutation could manifest in any number of different ways. That's what he seems to be saying in this story. At least from everything I've read.
And, while it's not one of the best ideas ever put forth in a comic book, I seriously don't think it's that bad. So sue me.
I only picked this arc up to learn how and why some mutants are being repowered.

I buy it for Sabretooth alone. He is my favorite Marvel mutant character.

Honestly, I think if the concept had been written into an independant science fiction story of it's own, it would be much stronger than trying to interject it into the Marvel Universe. But even at this rate it ain't that bad, it's still a decent idea, but maybe just lacking in execution and retcon-i-ness.

Watching Bianchi draw these two characters fighting each other for 6 issues is worth it.
As for the plot...it honestly won't affect Wolverine in the long run. I guess now he'll just know why he really hates Sabertooth.

Probably stole Logan's favourite chew toy by the sounds of it.

Yeah, the thing that intrigues me, though, is the whole rivalry between the dark-haired Lupine and the blonde one. I mean, obviously the dark-haired one is supposed to represent Logan and the blonde one Creed, but we already know Logan's origin and he isn't millions of years old. He was born James Howlett at the end of the 19th century.
So is he a descendant of that particular Lupine, and Creed a descendant of the blonde one? Is that why they hate each other? If so, then that makes it a family blood feud going back millions of years!
And who the heck is the big mysterious Lupine who keeps intervening in the Wolverine/Sabretooth fights? And what does Weapon X have to do with all of it?
IMO these are some compelling questions, and the answers to them over the next two issues will either make or break this story.

I keep hoping this isn't actually memories but more like something that is a metaphor for them. Or that these are their relatives that have been waging this war between "families" through the ages.
I gotta go back and reread them b/c I think I missed the big lupine guy breaking up their fights.

Yeah, it's gotta be that. Otherwise it totally negates 'Origin' and that would make zero sense.
Then again, Marvel does a lot of things that make zero sense, so who knows?

Oooh pretty pictures.
The story however sucks. I'm considering dropping the title.

At this point, I consider Origins to be a better title than Wolverine.

Who did Loeb bribe to convince the industry that he was an A-List writer?
Seriously, did he do anything that made him deserving of his status?
Were those Batman stories that big of a deal?

Well, I enjoyed his "Hush" storyline w/ Jim Lee and his Superman/Batman arc with Turner, but I'm not extremely well versed in either of their continuities, so that may be why I don't have as much of a problem with those arcs as I do this one. So that would be my guess.
Loeb seems to be able to come up with decent concepts, but he falters bad where continuity is concerned, so for fans that have been around the block, he falls short.

Long Halloween and the other one he did with Tim Sale were both excellent though.
Actually, come to think of it - his 'colour' books and his Wolverine and Gambit mini were with Sale too. I think probably all his best stuff is with Tim Sale.
