It's not really surprising, due to various things that you're probably well-aware of if you follow the show behind-the-scenes: the show's high cost to produce, its solid but declining ratings, the fact that the story finally appears to be headed toward a conclusion, the recent increase in season four episodes from 13 to 22, etc.

It's been a great ride. I just really hope that all the major plots (specifically, the ultimate purposes of Baltar/Avatar Six, Caprica Six/Avatar Baltar, and Starbuck/Avatar Leoben, and what exactly is up with the Final Five) are resolved in season four, or I'm gonna be extremely disappointed. :/

Thats actually pretty old news. It was questionable for a while if there would even be a season IV and then if it would only be a half season instead of a full season.

The decision to make Season four the final season may have been coming for a long time, but it's actual announcement is new. And I think it is a good thing for the show. Bad for the fans, but good for the show. Now they know how long they have to wrap all the loose ends up, and having a direction for the season will keep things focused on good, exciting stories and less filler like the airlock episode last season. Good episode, but it didn't do a lot to advance the overall story.

This could end up being the best season yet.

It's probably not so good for the show in terms of syndication money. I was hoping for five seasons, as I think that's pretty much the maximum that a show with a continuing storyline can maintain. I feel the same way about Lost, but at least their extra two seasons will be shorter.

Given it's ongoing storyline Battlestar was never a great candidate for syndication to begin with.

It's probably not so good for the show in terms of syndication money.

With cable and DVD sales the rules have kind of changed when it comes to profiting from a tv series once it's over. They rerun shows like Arrested Development and Freaks and Geeks on various places. Even Battlestar Galactica could be aired in syndication on weekends (Farscape occasionally shows up on local networks here with only four 20 episode seasons.)

Losts total episode count will equal about five seasons of an average tv show.

What about BSG TV movies in the future?

As others have stated, this may be good news.

There´s nothing more sad than seeing a show whither and die as it plummets into mediocrity.

David Eick says it might not be the last season. (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?id=41457)

I have a feeling the show will last five seasons tops.

Five seasons and a spinoff, I hope.

Five seasons and a theatre movie wouldn´t be too bad either.

It might be the last season for BSG as we know and they might completely screw up a fifth... ya know... like the previous series.

What previous series?

Are you talking about thet 80s show Which Name Shall Not Be Pronounced?

Five seasons and a spinoff, I hope.

About the Caprica spinoff: I wouldn't hold my breath. There's barely been any official word on the project since it was announced over a year ago, and in this recent interview with Ron Moore at salon.com, (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2007/03/24/battlestar/) Mr. Moore suggests that Caprica's been shelved indefinitely.

I think the guy reading the scripts would probably have a pretty good idea as to whether or not it's the last season. :p :)

Eick and Moore just must be annoyed that they didn't get to make the announcement themselves.

But honestly, I just can't see the show lasting more than 5 seasons tops.

Given it's ongoing storyline Battlestar was never a great candidate for syndication to begin with.

Didn't stop some folks from syndicating "Babylon 5."

Probably should have made myself clearer: I knew about them "thinking" about Caprica, but assumed it was dead in the water, never to happen. When I say spinoff, I mean another space based show in the Battlestar Galactica universe, preferably after the Cylon stuff is done.
