Has it been specified what the team will do upon their return?

If the Astonishing team is the public face and Rogue's squad is supposed to be their strike force where does that leave the Uncanny squad? What will their purpose be?

Check out the Uncanny X-Men #486 preview thread. There's loads of spoilers there. Depressing spoilers at that.

My guess is inter-mutant affairs based upon the next story-arc deals with the morlocks. Perhaps something with the 198??? Whatever it is, Bru needs to step it up because I was lessed than thrilled with his Shi'aar arc.

If the next arc isn't alot better than the Shi-ar arc, I'll drop the book. It's been mediocre, at best, for many months despite a stellar cast of interesting X-men. The conclusion of that story, according to the spoilers, is only going to make it even worse and even more unsatisfying. Bru gets an F for his first arc with the Uncanny team.

So whatever happens to this group, the writing's going to have to get alot better or I won't buy the books until they're in the bargain bin.

It seems like the next arc will be kind of a tossed together group that isn't playing any specific function or role, and is merely a random group of characters dealing with a crisis.

It sounds like the arc takes place over a short period of time since Brubaker said in the Livewire interview there wasn't anything wrong with Storm taking a couple of days to go help the Morlocks.

After the eXtremists arc is the fall X-Event and the massive changes that will probably bring, so there isn't really time for the team to be some specific type of team.

I think that the team will only have a specific role after the big crossover.

1. I like your idea about inter-mutant affairs. It fits with the return of Storm since in the past she not only protected mutants but also, through the XSE, made sure they followed the law. Bishop would fit perfectly if this were the case since he also did the same in District X. (Let the Bishop haters begin the bashing :D )

2. Does anyone know if the XSE is still in existence?

As the XSE was a means of assimilating the mutant community into law enforcement, and the mutant community can now fit entirely inside a high school gymnasium, I would guess it's been phased out.

hopefully it will be fluid group of mutants who team together to take on threats, less a team and more so a group.

Apparently, now they are merely supporting cast for the Fantastic Four and unable to take care of mutant problems so they have to call on the FF for help.

It all depends on what the situation is with Professor X. If Scott still won't have him in the School I guess they will become a team of Xavier loyalists and operate independently of the other X-Men.

You're not one for waiting to read the story before forming conclusions are you?

I believe that the X.S.E. "stopped" existing sometime after the monsterous Savage Land Arc, just before House of M. In the beginning of #466 it looks like the X.S.E. is dealing with a situation before reality is changed. They never really talked about it afterwards, with Storm's departure from the Mansion and all.

I also think this will be a ragtag "team" until after the November event. Then based on where things lie will there be a fleshed out team again.

Oh, come on, ever since there are team comics, there have been team-ups. I don't see what's the big deal.

Seems like the most likely solution. Ideally, I'd like to see something more similar to the Morrison/Carey/Claremont setup though (teaching staff/field squad/renegade team off base)... otherwise it gets hard to justify 3 teams imo.

I hope we don't get X-Men versus X-Men situations then. We got that already with the two Avengers teams now.

Looks like it may end up X-men vs X-men vs X-men actually.

I dunno... I always thought the idea of "set" teams was pretty dumb. I would much rather see a mansion full of mutants that are assigned out for specific missions. i.e. the individual books are about individual threats and not "teams" per se. I mean, dang, the X-men would be unstoppable that way- Juggernaught attacking? send Polaris to magnetically rip his helmet off and Emma Frost. (as an example)

That's a disaster waiting to happen. Seriously, it sounds chaotic and uninteresting. The X-Men books work best when they're character-driven. You can't do character-driven effectively if those characters are constantly changing. There needs to be some stability.

Exactly. And that was more or less what happened in the 90's, when Nicienza and Lobdell took over, where the separations between the teams was only in name.

I hope something good, because this si the only X-team I need. I just wish Iceman was on the team
