Damn. Carey pretty much confirms that Cable is a goner from his X-men book. He said that Fabian was okay with him borrowing Nate "so long as he gave him back in good order."
I knew that this was probably the case, but I'm still a little disappointed. Hopefully Mike will add Beast or someone else I like in his place. Wolverine perhaps?;)

Ohhhh, he hesitated when they asked if Jean's coming back!
Yeah, sounds like she's coming back to me.
I wonder if getting rid of Rachel and Cable from the core X-men books was an intentional move on the part of Marvel editorial. I mean, if they want the X-men books to be somewhat of a "blank slate" after the crossover (as has been mentioned in interviews) and they're going to bring Jean back, it only makes sense that they'd want to dump some of the baggage surrounding both her and Cyclops (namely grown-up children from alternate futures).
Hmm...I think I might be onto something here. Or perhaps I'm just reading too much into things (as I have a tendency to do; see the Wolverine #53 thread for examples).

I love how they were all WOWed by Mike after the interview. He does have that power. :D
I'm also more confident about the crossover. I'm pleased that Mike is secure that the crossover will be satisfying and I like that he said it will be an emotional story.

I think #200 will be pretty tragic. I love tragedies (maybe because I'm part greek?) so I'm all for it. The Marauders will make Rogue's team in pieces.
LOL at the end of the X-Cast! Gilmore Girls = Grey Girls. F*ck! How haven't I ever thought of that??
rwsmith
05-11-2007, 09:16 AM
Yeah, issue 200 should be incredible. I'm a little surprised at the stuff about Cable, though. I really thought Mike was setting him up for big things in the future, but it sounds as though he's just handing him back over to Fabian. Which is great for people who like C&D, but I just happen to not enjoy it all that much.
With some of the comments out of the X-office like "if you weren't interested in Cable before issue #200, you definitely will be afterwards," I really thought they were going to keep him in a core X-men book and position him front and center in the X-Universe. And, while I'm sure Fabian has some interesting things in store for him over in his own book, I just thought they were going to do more with the character than shuffle him back off to a second-tier X-title.
Oh, well. A writer finally gets me interested in the guy again and now he's done with him. Guess I can just go back to ignoring Mr. Dayspring Askani'son Summers Gesundheit!
Unless, of course, he ends up siding with Sinister and becomes a major X-men villain. That has potential as well.

I think Cable will be in Mike's book until this year's end, but he wont make the post-crossover team.
I think he has an important part to play in the big event.

No, he was actually taken by surprise. They were asking about characters showing up in the future, and he was saying yes, no, or no comments.

I dunno. Jean's hardly a surprise name to bring up when asking about future characters.
However the stars do seem to be aligning for her resurrection.

Exactly, to keep fans guessing. But Joe Q already said there is no point in bring her back and that was a huge mistake to bring her in 1986, and doesn't want to repeat it.

He doesn't drop any hints about her future, though.

If the goal is to make Cable/Deadpool more high profile, then Fabian needs to be the one driving Nate's character, not Carey.
I'm sad to see Nate leaving X-Men, but I'm under the impression he'll be guest starring quite a bit.

Uh...yeah...that's not gonna happen. Maybe if they put someone like Steve McNiven on the book as artist. Otherwise I think it will continue to sell in the 20-30K range that it does now.
I'm sad to see Nate leaving X-Men, but I'm under the impression he'll be guest starring quite a bit.
See, I'm not under that impression at all. In fact, I'm thinking that whatever happens in issue #200 takes him down a totally opposite path from the X-men.
Like I said, oh well. Now I can go back to despising the character again since I know Carey won't have him anymore and he's going back to Fabian so he can be a whiny, wannabe "messiah" figure. Give me badass, gun-toting Cable over uber-powerful, savior Cable any day of the week!

I haven't caught up with C&D yet, but I love where Cable is in that book. Its one of the rare cases where uber-powerful actually works for me because his agenda feels so fresh and significant.

Can anyone give me a general summary of the interesting said? I don't have the compooter power to ever see/listen to these things.
Lots of interesting stuff. Carey said the Marauders team that will be showing up will be the same roster as the original Mutant Massacre team except one character will be missing. He was asked about whether certain characters would show up in his run. He wants to use Paige/Husk and deal with the Guthries in general. Northstar and Aurora will show up again, as will the Children. He's a Dani Moonstar fan. I don't think he said he had definite plans for her, but I don't remember. I think he answered yes or highly likely when asked about Gambit, Sunfire, and Angel - although I think maybe one of these he said would show up in someone else's book rather than adjectiveless.
Killing off Jean was one of the few things he didn't like about Morrison's run, but to me it didn't seem he was indicating that she'd return.
He said he became a big fan of Claremont's X-Men when he started with Uncanny #108, and I think he said the read X-Men into the #200s. Previously, he had read English reprints of the original 5. He's a Cyclops fan. He wanted to revive Rogue from being the one-note angsty relationship-centered character she had become. Surprise, surprise - he's a big Rogue fan. He has no intention of redeeming Sabretooth. His idea behind creating his team was to create a tension from within. He wanted a triangle of good, reliable characters (which turned out to be Rogue, Iceman, and Cannonball) and then some questionable characters.
Etc., etc.

He picked Rogue to be leader because he loves her and wanted to end all the angst of her relatinship and return her to the sexy, edgy Rogue.
He hates when Iceman is portrayed as a lockeroom jerck, because he's an experient X-Man, and we'll be seeing that.
He has plans for Paige.
He picked Karima because he fell in love with Bachalo's HoM design of the character.
Cable took Psylocke's place.
The Children will be back, and we'll see Serafina again.
The Marauders will have some interesting surprises. He said that even with all the teasers released, #200 will still surprise us all.
He's really excited about the crossover and he thinks we'll love it.
Gambit, Sunfire, Jubilee and Magneto will be back this year (not necessarily on his book)
Northstar and Aurora will be in the crossover.
He loves Bachalo's art.
I think that covers it.;)

It may have been a tease but I think the signs point to Jean Grey's return within a year (who wants to bet?).
I predict that Jean may appear in the Endangered Species story as one of the cosmic characters that react to whats going on and she will probably return during or after the big X-Event this fall.
Is there a way to talk to Mike and tell him how much I want...no...NEED to have Jean back? Maybe he just needs some suggestions on how to do it!
Remember Mike Carey has his own blog and forum at MikeCarey.net
So fans can always post there and let him know that they would love for him to write Jean Grey as Phoenix.

Why would any cosmic character react or give a damn about some Earthlings not having powers? Even Jean/Phoenix, if she didn't gave a crap about BILLIONS being slaughtered in Annihilation, millions of mutants being depowered would be irrelevant (and even if they were relevant, why not do it at the moment it happened?). And bring Jean back at Endangered Species (which wouldn't make any sense) would just be a way of using her to be the Deus Ex Machina of this event, replacing Scarlet Witch and Dr. Strange. She isn't coming back... and the world is a happier place because of that:p

My guess is that Cable will be involved in whatever is going on with what's going on with mutantkind that begins in X-Men 200 and/or Endangered Species, but will split with the X-Men over the way things need to be handled.
Sales of C&D have been considerably higher when it's more interconnected to what's going on in the Marvel Universe or X-Books, rather than staying it is own little bubble. If this is supposedly the year that everyone takes notice of C&D, I'd think that it'd start to play a bigger role in the MU as a whole.
I'd rather Cable go back to having a mission, rather than a messiah. But he still needs to be part of the X-family, not off on his own.
rwsmith
05-14-2007, 09:15 AM
Y'know, my biggest problem with C/D is that there's just too much silliness in it. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a book that doesn't take itself too seriously, but that book just goes overboard with the jokes IMO.
I do think a big part of the problem is the art, though. Perhaps a more "serious" artist would dillute some of the campy, joke-time feel of the book overall? Y'know who would absolutely kill on C/D IMO? John Romita, Jr. I mean, he draws a great Spider-man, so you already know his Deadpool would be killer (pun intended), and I like the way he draws Cable too.
I think I should start a JRJR on Cable/Deadpool campaign.
