View Full Version : Suggest me a job!

So I'm currently finishing up my thesis (ha ha, he said, knowing how much work was left to be done on it), and I'm not getting any more funding from the university. I'm working this summer as a college instructor, and figure that the chances of me getting more work from them is slim to none (and they pay absolute SHIT rates, I get about half what I get from the university per course). I have a BA in English, am not interested in moving at the moment, and need to find something that can help support my family once my wife goes to work. She'll be likely be doing full time hours, so a night shift job or something with flexible scheduling would help.
Any suggestions for jobs? Brainstorming is always helpful.

Internet related stuff. Either web development, of course you'll have to figure out if you're built for it (it takes a certain kind of brain that I don't seem to have, I'm more of a foreign language guy, that's why I work as a freelance translator), or making a website that draws enough traffic to make money from advertising or selling stuff (the guy at http://www.questionablecontent.net/ makes money selling shirts).
By the way, questionable content is a REALLY well written and well drawn comic (very funny). You really ought to read it daily.
BBSpot.com, Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome also spring to mind that make money from advertising on their sites. Of course, it also depends on whether you like spending long hours in front of a computer.

Writing papers for college students who can't write for shit. There has to be big money in that, since it seems to me lately that it might probably be...oh...all of them.
Oh, you mean legit jobs? Um, bookstore? They have flexible hours usually. Or you could scout the headhunters for jobs. Maybe a temp job somewhere doing part time stuff. It's hit or miss with job hunting agencies, but I've had good luck with them in the past. (Some bad luck too. Like I said. Hit or miss.)

Dancing eh? No one will go for that, given that I've been giving it away for free for years!
I'd teach public school, but that means another two years minimum of schooling, which I can't afford at this point.
My biggest frustration is that it's hard to find anything in this town, and we just bought a house here. Didn't think it would be so difficult.

Best wishes Stealth. Job hunting can be most taxing at times, but you will get a job.

You could mow Joshy Pants lawn, while he's mowing James Owens.
Now the travel expense might make it prohibitive, but what the heck; You'd get to see the country. :D
On the serious side, I have no idea what the job market is like in your neck of the woods.
So I'll just wish you luck in finding something tolerable.

Why hasn't anyone suggested crack whore yet?
Actually, for flexibility I'd suggest trying to do freelance writing or freelance editing. I don't know if you can sustain yourself solely on that, but it's a good help since you can make your own hours. If you know anyone who does freelance web design or web development, they'll probably need someone to write or edit a client's content. Similarly, if you have any journalism experience you can always try stringing for a paper or getting clips at a weekly so you can get some magazine feature gigs.
A caveat on freenlancing: I don't know what tax laws are like in Canada, but in my neck of the woods they will gouge you if you receive income as a self-employed independent contractor. If things are similar there, you need to find things to write off that are associated with freelance (e.g., computer, laptop, printer, software, webcam for video conferencing, etc.).

well don't you have crack addiction first??...;)
seriously though, i have a couple of friends who edit for publishing companies as a freelancer and they seem do ok...aside from that...i think shisho's suggestion of temping is a solid one, though i don't know what the job force is like in canada, but there's so much corporate turn over here temping is a pretty ideal gig if you're not looking to get tied down to anything and still make enough to get bills and such paid.
