Well, my boss finally fired me. Him and his boss have both f'n hated me for a long time, now. I loved my job, most of the people I worked with, most of the customers, etc. There were some that made it unbearable, though. It sucks when your boss doesn't value you and treats you like a piece of shit. I know I'm not the only one this happens to, either. Everyone I've talked to about how lousy I've been treated have all said they're being done dirty at their jobs, too. This is the first time I've ever been fired before. I have no clue what to do. I thought I'd start here with you guys, my support structure.

First off, without having to go into specifics of how/why you were fired on this board, you should check your local city employment agenecy and find out if you are eligable for unemployment. This will help with bill payments till you get another job. The other thing you can do there is check job listings for a new job that you are qualified for, including state and federal jobs that you will not find in a classified. They also should have a tools for helping with creating cover letters and resumes,as well as getting registered for job refferals as they come in.
Good luck. :)

Crap, I'm sorry Ray. I agree with what Night said, as you should get the basics taken care of as soon as possible, so you can then concentrate on finding a new job. If you need any specific help, let us all know.

Well, that sucks, Ray.:(
Especially the timing. Night is right, though get to the unemployment agency to get the ball rolling, then take a day or two to adjust to the hurt of it.
Then go kick ass till ya find something better.
I've never lost a job where it didn't end up better in the long run.
The short run can be pretty scary and depressing though.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

What to do now? Well, it's Thursday. You got today and tomorrow and the weekend to either enjoy a three day weekend or your morning period. Whichever you want. Take it easy, relax, have fun or feel sorry for yourself. It's all good.
As of Monday, your vacation is over and you can no longer feel sorry for yourself. Because you have a full time job...job hunting. Get up in the morning and shower and shave and dress like you are normally going to work. In the morning you are working on your resume, after lunch you are looking for jobs and opportunities. Look on Monster.com, look in the newspaper.
But as of Monday you are hitting the pavement hard and that is how you are going to get through this.

If you have friends with a lot of business experience tap their brains. Ask them for the best words and phrases to put on a resume. Ask them what potential employers look for in resumes and ask them to proof read your resume as well.
There is also the all important cover letter. You can create a "stock" cover letter or a kind of template but make sure that you tweak and tailor it to each particular job you are applying for -- making sure you highlight your talents that will be attractive to that employer. Get the same people who proof read your resume to proof read your cover letter as well.
Good luck, something better WILL come along.

Yes yes yes
last time I was fired, I was unemployed for a month and then I was offered a job with a 15k raise. Being fired was the best thing that ever happened to me.
This too shall pass.

Ray, that just sucks the gargantuan wazoo. You have some good advice from others in the above posts, and I wish you well with it. You are a really fine person, and better things will come your way, even though that's not much consolation today.
I've been fired twice. It hurts like hell, I won't lie about that. Once because my job was suddenly redundant in a company merger, but still they waited until a quarter of five to tell me that at 5 pm I had to clear out my office and be escorted out of the building! Totally blindsided by the news.
The second time, I had been ill for a good while due to things I could not help. They let me come back to work for about a month (someone had taken over my office, except for taking down my university diploma) and then fired me one morning over some absolutely bogus reason. They first asked for my resignation. I in reply asked if they thought I was stupid, because giving a resignation would have released them from paying any unemployment benefits, so I told them to fire me if they wanted me gone. They did.
I had a copy of my last evaluations, which for some reason that I DID question at the time, were written longhand on a form IN PENCIL! I had photocopied them and signed them under duress. When I went straight the day I was fired to the Employment Commission in Jonesboro, I gave them a copy of MY copy and told them of the reasons they gave me for firing me. Turns out, the company LIED to the EC about the reasons they gave me for being fired, and gave them an altered copy of the evaluations. I had the company by the short hairs. I collected unemployment for my entire six months, and during that time laid the groundwork for starting my own little business.
So, yeah, Ray. Grieve it, but hit the ground running. You have a lot ahead of you, and we all send good vibes that you will find somewhere that you both love and are appreciated for the work you do. Best of luck, man.

You guys are so great. I think tomorrow, I'm going to go by the unemployment office and also call to find out about my sick time, vacation time, and 401k. That'll go a long way towards paying off our arseload of debt. My wife still has her full-time job, and we've got foster payment (a little bit) coming up. I think for now, I'm going to try to find a part-time/temporary job. That way, I can take a little bit of a breather while still getting paid. I can take that extra time to get some things done around here, write, read my mountain of comics, and hunt for that mythical beastie called The Perfect Job.
In other news, the foster kids that we got last Friday went to stay with family on Tuesday. We had Wednesday kid free. Now, we have a less-than-one-year-old. We borrowed a crib from my brother-in-law. I put it together tonight (is it supposed to look like Picaso designed it?). He's a very good baby, but I'm about to pull my hair out. That's only because I've never really been around kids. I've now assisted in changing 2 diapers, I've assisted in 2 baths, I've given 1 bath by myself, I've been spit-up on. I'm waiting to be peed on next. My dad says I should totally write a color commentary book on foster parenting, especially since the whole kids-thing is new to me. Could be something to it.

Ray, you know that I give you a hard time just because I loathe you. I mean love you. I hope that this setback won't make you dwell on the pointless, hellish exist... I mean, that you won't let this get you down too much. One door closes, another door opens to a bricked-in wall and now you realize you're trapped and asphyxiating. No wait. Usually there's a way out after the screaming.
I know that times seem dark at least half the time because it's night. But all hope is not there. I mean, all hope is not lost. Because, when you feel down, and you really need someone to stand beside you, remember---we're all a bunch of strangers on the internet.

I swear that's the same speech I got; except that they added the personal touch of "suck it up, loser".
Seriously, I wish I had known you all better when I lost my job back in January. Probably would have made things a lot easier on my state of mind, back then.
But I was pretty much just lurking and reading the olney thread.

You should seriously write a foster parent commentary book Ray. I've mostly heard only horror stories about foster care but with your sense of humor, I think that you could keep it real while supplying a bit of levity.
I think that if you wrote a book it could really make a difference too. People hear all of the flaws of foster care, end up thinking that it's a hopeless situation and end up doing nothing. If you could write a book finding humor in the idea of someone, who has even yet to deal with his own children peeing and spitting up on him, I think that would be a great inspiration and an amusing story.
Maybe there was a reason that you were fired now. Maybe God is trying to tell you that He has other, better plans for you. Acutally I know that He does, it's just a matter of what those plans are.

I was fired from a job I had worked for 5 years- big Fortune 500 company.
My fiancee at the time decided that the smartest thing for me to do would be sit on my unemployment and finish my degree; I only had a few classes left. It was less than 2 years after 9/11, so I was eligible for 12 months of unemployment.
I finished my degree, and my fiancee moved up the date of our wedding so I would be covered under her health insurance. (And we had an awesome wedding, by the way.)
I finished my degree...and was contacted by my old job to do a short-term assignment for $50/hour. From there, I got a contract job at my current employer for a bit less, but with a great boss and great working conditions.
I was lucky. My wife was awesome, and made sure I did the right things to maximize my opportunities. (I also took the test necessary to teach math in NJ should I decide to do that.) Use this time as a chance to figure out what you REALLY want to do for the rest of your life.
If I could go back, I'd thank the boss that fired me. Unfortunately, that division of the company seems to have been closed, and the company has since split apart, done a layoff or two, and is now being bought by private equity. What a shame.
I wish you the best!

Thanks, everyone. RS, those episodes and the company really did help me out last night. Tomorrow, I'll go file for unemployment since I had such a busy day Friday and was unable to. I did apply for the postal exam (for August, I think), and I'm thinking about taking some part-time/temporary work to give myself some time to decompress. As a side-note, I've felt so relieved since the initial shock wore off. Updates to come. Still need those prayers.

Another thing, don't talk bad or negative about any former employers no matter what! Leave your dirty laundry there. Just find a way to turn everything into a positive or neutral explanation.
So you might want to practice and think about how you're gonna answer questions about why you were fired. Be honest, but just not TOO honest you know.

Well, my dad had worked there for 9 months longer than I had. He got fired yesterday. He was so pissed about what happened to me and they'd been beating both of us down for so long. He put in his 2 weeks notice, and they fired him. We both hated to be fired, but we feel sooooo much relief.
I went and filed for unemployment earlier in the week. I've been keeping busy around the house. I've finally had time to fix some things that've been needing it for awhile. I've been cleaning the house daily, because the foster kid totally wrecks the place. I guess technically, we do, but we don't have time to clean it at night after he gets home from daycare. I'm gonna do some yard work and run some errands and read some comics and watch some Star Trek over the next few days, but I'm also going to be reading over want ads (got a stack) and my unemployment handbook and search online, too.
Continued prayers are mucho welcomedo.

That's fucked up, man.

You've both got them coming from my way. Your dad will probably have a lot harder time finding a new job than you will. I know right now I can't go out and BUY a "real" job, so I have had to create my own from home. No get rich quick scheme here, just a stay-afloat tactic.

My ex-boss actually works from our sister office in Memphis. He's there 99.9% of the time. Well, they did this one guy's eval today, and it was very poor. They ripped him a new one about being a loner, not a team player, etc. So this guy, being the grouch (but lovable) old man that he is fills out his comment lines with: "How the hell can this guy actually eval anyone at this office when he's never here?!"
Funny.
My ex-company is divided into Sales Dept. and Operations Dept. I was under operations. My sales manager (who used to be my operations manager prior to the jackass that fired me) loves both myself and my dad. We helped him out big time, and vise versa. Well, I found out that when we got fired, our sales guy face-to-face said to my boss: "Well, you've screwed me in every other way possible, you gonna screw my wife next?!?"
Funny.

They fired your dad for turning in his 2 weeks notice? Not only is that GREAT grounds for unemployment claim, that is POSSIBLE grounds for a lawsuit. I would seek out a lawyer for a consultation for information.
Best wishes to both you and your dad,Az. Your a good guy, despite what Shel says. Hope you both find BETTER employment soon.
