New X-Men #38 - Summary and Spoilers!!!!

Wow. Great issue all around!! People will be soooo pissed off at the end, though.:evilsmile

So Elixir is all creepy now. He touches David and now he can see without his glasses. Meanwhile, outside the Institute, Nori and Julian are arguing because Hellion took Laura in a suicide mission to save Cess and didn't tell their leader about it. Then, the mansion explodes (again!). Julian tries to get inside but he just can't. Apparently, there's a wall preventing him. Nori screams for David.

David wakes up. He's chained in Limbo!! By his side, Dust and Cessily are also in chains. The three of them are in some kind of altar. We can see a lot of the Limbo residents bringing other students: Bling!, X-23 (trying to fight her way out), Elixir and Trance (Skottie draws her so cute!!! She's freakin' terrified here, though).

David, Cess and Dust realize that the Limbo soldiers knew they should take the telepaths out first. We see the Cuckoos and Martha Johanson with helmets in their heads, all unconscious. We can also see Indra, Ernst, Hisako and Onyxx already chained as well.

Cess freaks out. She wants to get out . She's start screaming for help. Then Dust finally sees Belaco and Sym. Behind them, the Astonishing team is imprisioned.

Dust: "We are outside of Allah's sight. We are in hell."

Belasco gets near David and start asking for Illyana.

Meanwhile, Trance is freaking out as well. Laura tells her to use her astral projection to reach the big light in the sky: that's the portal. Laura can see the Institute at the other side.

Cut to the other group, also scared. They keep questioning Blindfold but she doesn't help. All she says is that Anole can't let Pixie fall into darkness. Then the Limbo demons appear! Match is the first to attack them. One of them punchs Loa in her stomach, but his hand just passes through her and desintegrates. Wolf Cub, Rockslide, Nezhno and Anole also attack. Pixie tries to protect Blindfold. She spreads her dust and the demons near her start seeing her as bubbles and Blindfold as a Teddy Bear (totally LOL moment!)

Rockslide tries to throw his fists but he suddenly explodes. Anole tells everybody to regroup, but one of the demons just cut one of his arms off!!! Just after that, the demon loses his head by a sword. The Darkchilde is here!!!!

Belasco keeps asking David about Illyana. David says she's dead. Belaso RIP HIS HEART OUT!!

Fantastic issue!! Lot of great moments and character interaction. Great art as well. And before people start to freak out, I'm sure that both Anole and David will be fine at the end of this arc. At least, I think!

After the last arc focussed mostly on just two characters, this arc features almost the entire school.

My guess is that Elixir is going to resurrect David, to show just how adept he is with his powers now; Anole's arm is the same, although I'm actually expecting them to reveal that (lizard-like as he is), he can regenerate his limbs.

I'm liking Young's art so far, although everything in these last two issues has been pretty heavy on shading (nighttime and the bowels of Limbo necessitate that).

Since this is all happening in Limbo, most likely he can be brought back. Everything about this arc is dealing with the supernatural, so you cant look at it as if Sabes or someone like that had ripped his heart out.

If Ill is reinstated as ruler of Limbo she can easily bring him back for one thing. This is looking out to be a great story arc.

I am hoping against hope that David will survive but Josh seems so sure he can save them no matter what but I think he may not have enough to save him. David is my favorite character so I hope he lives. I am waiting to see how the story ends before I pass judgment.

C&C said in an interview no one dies in this Arc. So I'm betting on David being 100% safe. Never cared much for David anyway, lol!

As for Anole. C&C BETTER fix him. :D I'm hoping he'll have growing-back-limb powers. Much like Lizards do with their tails. I'd very much like it to be just as a surprise to Vic than as it would be the reader.

Also, I'm not ruling out Josh healing him, either, lol.

I liked Scottie's art, making the students look more like kids (which is what they are) and less like super-hot jail-bait.:D

I liked how most of the students were used, I don't care that this means less panel time for everybody.

I didn't like how easily the killing and the maiming came, although the bad guys ARE supposed to be that badass. I didn't care for David but c'mon!! Anole? At least he'll probably regenerate his arm anyway!:p

Let's hope for some more story next issue because all this issue was about was "Rockslide inexplicaly explodes, Anole loses arm, David loses his heart":p

Well the book doesn't really focus on the X-men and we didn't see what was happening in the mansion. THey ight be worried as hell but we don't really need to see that. At least not in my opinion. And as for the "death", let's see how it plays out.

I think the art is wonderful. All the kids look like kids. They're also all very unique looking and just plain fun. I can't stop staring at all the panels.

I agree with everyone who thinks Josh will save David and Victor will heal himself. Victor has soooo much potential if he can pull this off!!!

How cute was Megan when she had to correct herself after telling Blindfold to "Look out!"? I loved seeing Pixie, Loa, and Wolf Cub in action. I can't wait to see what Nezhno can do.

Well C&C said that no student is going to bite it in this arc. So i guess he will somehow made it through.

This would mean he would be the second X-cast member to survive a sudden heart removale.

Of course this reminds me to something. Its funny in both scenes the wounded person and the removed heart are shown in a shadow.

About Anole, it think since he is a lizard hybrid type mutant maybe he has some sort of regeneration ability he didn't knew about (just like how some lizards can regrew theire tails).

All in all, it was a fairly good issue. Totally agreed that Anole will probably exhibit some never before mentioned limb regeneration ability. After all, Komodo lost her arm in Avengers: The Initiative #1 and started regrowing it almost immediatly. Nice to see some of the under utilized students getting some love. A bit tired of the shock deaths, but being limbo I doubt David's down for the count. Can't wait for the next issue.

Loa's name is Alani Ryan. According to the yearbook, she "swims" through solid material, crumbling it behind her. Today's issue was the first time we saw her powers in use. Loa is from Hawaii and likes surfing!

Trance's name is Hope Abbott. She can make an astral projection of herself. She likes classic music and she plays the violin, although we never saw that.

Preview's name is Jessica Vale. She had precognition so she was never surprised by anything. Jessie was depowered.

Match's name is Ben Hammil. He has pyrokinesis. And... you know, a flaming head. He also has a short temper.

No, not me.

But he's not dead for good, and one of the things about Limbo is that there can be multiple versions of the same characters in Limbo at the same time. All of the X-men who were around when Illyana first went to Limbo died there, or alternate versions of them did...

I think Victor will regenerate the arm, or Magik will fix it somehow. Either way, it looks like Victor is going to be the leader of the B squad now. Which is pretty cool when you think about how much potential he has. He's the closest thing the New X-men have their very own Peter Parker...

Yeah, that was a let down, especially since he still didnt do anything. And is it just me, or is his codename now "Gentle?" Did I misread/interpret that? That's a really weird codename, and it's a freakin' adjective. Anyway, with his powers, it makes me wonder why Emma left him out of that Danger Room session. He'd better have like Class 100 strength or something outrageous and not just like mediocre Class 25 strength. At least that would explain leaving him out (so he wouldn't just go overkill on everyone). Maybe it's just politics, he is Wakandan (sp?) so maybe Emma didn't want the possibility of the Black Panther or his government to be breathing down their necks in terms of safety/liability/etc. if Nehzno was on a team (or maybe it's just b/c he doesn't do anything in a fight).

And one last thing, who else thinks Anole also has some regenerative powers like a "regular" lizard? Would kinda explain why he isn't passed out or dead from all that bleeding.

OMG, I love Pixie and her hallucinogen powers! She's so cute and it's so funny that she made the demons see rainbow bubbles and a stuffed bear. She probably has the best powers ever. I'd love to see a scene where she makes the other kids high. (I've never gotten high-btw, nor do I endorse that behavior, I just think it would be funny in the book)

OMG!!!! I bought the issue, and WOWOWOWOW!!!! From beginning to end, the story is FANTAS STICK!!! Amazing job C&C/Skottie!!!! I am falling in love with Nezhno, he just seems like a character I would love!!!

So I read the issue for the 13th time I think he lost his ability to use his limbs as missiles because of what Blindfold said.Which makes me happy because I always hated that.... specially that scene that he uses his arms and himself to block the entrance to the maze...

I'm sure it will be replaced with a new power though... Anyways, my main issue with this arc is the way Ashida is drawn. She looked like an anteater in one panel!! Other than that, the writing is good and the drawing has its ups and downs.

Wow, that was awesome!! Illyana!! Skottie!!! Wow, that was awesome.

The art was great. The pacing was great. The character interaction was fantastic. My only complaint is it wasn't long enough. I could have kept reading this all day. I've already read it three times. I wish I would have bought an extra copy.

Illyana!! Goat legs, goat horns, and goatee?(that's a weird shadow) and she's hangin out with Dr. Conners. Cool, maybe he can help Vic with his arm.

I am so happy with this book. I don't even know why they make any other comics. Well, I'm going to go read it again. Thanks again Chris and Skottie.

This issue was pretty nice too .. it wasn't the type of issue you put down it was a page turner IMO.

Loa's powers are pretty interesting! I think Belasco is pretty underused and I'm glad to see him.. he's pretty much a devil/demon isn't he? I think that's pretty interesting/freaky..

Besides no one is forced to buy this book, if you aren't enjoying you can drop it. I like the "feel" of the book and would be wary of a change.

I think the book is a lot better at trying to be cute than trying to be adult and serious. I've enjoyed these past two issues a lot because the emphasis is around having a fun tale then burying a fresh one in another explosion.

Personally, Rockslide's "team" is waay more interesting than the New X-Men have ever been simply because the boring angst and melodrama that this book has rarely been able to pull off in the past is sitting in the back seat. It feels like its about kids again, and that's always been what sets this title apart from others.

The issue felt a little empty, but it was still pretty good and should serve as a good set up, especially for the maimed and that crazy boy Elixir. And the art, as I said, made me melt (though Surge looks super akward).

About Gentle, and his powers: I bet he has like this undescriptable strength… like he can break a building with only a touch or throw someone miles away by using only one finger. That would make sense, since his power is “extreme strength” and not “super strength”. I think that’s why we saw him doing yoga, because he needs to control his strength and be super gentle all the time to not hurt people, thereby his codename. And also, it’s kind of funny if you think about it, we were all thinking of some kind of gentle power because of his name and the fact Emma didn’t let him fight, etc. that we didn’t consider the total opposite of that: extreme strength! Totally unexpected and geniusly thought. Anyway, that’d make him too powerful.
About Loa: super cool power, she’s like a mixture of Kitty and Wither but she has her power totally under control, but again… too powerful!

I just finished the issue and all I have to say is that New X-men must be the new Mickey D's because I'M LOVING IT!!! The art is so amazing. Skottie, you totally rock my socks! This has easily become my favorite book. Pixie has become one of my favorite characters in this book. She is just too adorable. I felt so bad for Cess though. She just escaped the Facility and now she is trapped again. This girl needs a long break.

I'd like to see Hisako join the New X-Men as well. I don't get why great new character should be wasted and killed off so quickly. But then again, New X-Men probably isn't the safest place with its high death toll.

Anyone else notice the Astonishing team behind Belasco? I wasn't sure what I was looking at, at first but then I noticed Emma has the same helmet as the Cuckoos and Martha.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Darkchylde she's so kickass, the cloven hooves, the tail, the horns.

the art is just spectacular.....I was skeptical at first when they showed previews of the characters b/c I thought it'd be "too cartoony", but it works really well with this book and the colouring is FANTASTIC

And Skottie knocked this out of the park. We're so lucky to have him on the book. Not only are his designs, compositions and action incredible, the amount of personality and emotion and individuality he brings to the kids is awesome.

about Santo... I read somewhere that Hellion reforming him will change him a bit, maybe he now can explode and reform at will (and change his form everytime he does this...)
about Anole... definetly limp regeneration powers, a la Lizard
about David... ok, no one dies in this arc, but without heart he is pretty dead to me. Maybe now the updated Elixir can bring him back from dead, but still he would've been dead at some point. Unless, noone can died at Limbo, so he'll be like a zombie for a while until Elixir heal him, but that would be weird...

I felt the beginning was kinda slow but then I realized it was because I had already read it in the preview.:p But the big Illyana reveal had me floored. You know, after rereading this issue, I realized what I really love about this art. They look like teenagers. I could actually imagine going to school with these kids. And the girls don't look like Maxim models. The last panel of Laura talking to Josh really reminded me of her NYX days and it gave me a lot of happy feelings.

I also love how Vic took control of the situation. He really needs to be on the team, or they just need to make another team and let him lead it.

Tsk... of course they can breathe. Belasco would never hurt a child, except what he did to David. And what he's going to do next issue to *CENSORED*. And the issue after that. And the one after that.

It was important to us to show that the other kids respected David. The entire school body really looked to him as a leader, up til... well, you know.

Josh isn't wearing shoes, so he's got his own problems. Like in Die Hard, there's probably sharp things on the floor of Limbo.

I like to write for X-23, because she's so matter of fact about the most horrible things. Santo, and whoever's talking to Santo at the moment. Pixie, because she's so innocent and fun. And Surge. I'm a sucker for the leaders.

I had a hard time with Elixir early on, because he was so angry. Craig is so much better at the emotional stuff than I am. But now that he's in his Zen realization stage, I'm doing better I think. Dust is hard for me, Craig loves her.

IF you want numbing violence with little character development along with a lot of explosions this is the book for you. This book really has no soul each issue is like an action movie with violence. Dont forget the popcorn.

I think you must be reading a different book to me....

Every issue has nice character moments, developing relationships, great stories and yeah..... awesome action.

If you want to jump on to this title, the current story started with issue #37. Issue #38 came out just last week.

As far as understanding it, all you basically need to know is that this book focuses on the young mutant students at Xaviers. If you like reading about younger super-hero teams, I think you'll enjoy this title. The rest, as far as character relationships etc., you can pick up as you read.

C&C were doing a nice book before, but they had to get cut 'cuz of budgeting. BUt with Young on art and bringing the 'yana back, its back on my pull. Great book, I'm glad to see Marvel get a colorist who completely gets Youngs style again. His work on Human Torch suffered from a more traditional coloring. Using the same style of coloring like on his Spider clan work is beautiful. Great work by all.

There are some things that may be useful to know if you're going to pick up this book. Reading the issue summaries for 32-36 on uncannyxmen.net would probably be enough.
Other than that- Magik was resurrected as a SHIELD agent in the NXM House of M issues and was in the process of teleporting when Wanda restored reality.
The quest for Magik is a new arc so the Prelude (37) is a great place to pick up NXM.

And that makes sense Chris, I can definitely understand that. He doesn't need to come back as a mutant though, I'm just saying! There are plenty of non-mutant Darkforce users in the Marvel U.....seeing as how Dallas was one of the ones who seemed pretty devastated over losing his powers, I think it'd definitely be interesting to see him as an example of a character who upset over the loss of his powers, tried other avenues to get them back. Like seeing where other Darkforce users got their powers from and trying to emulate that, or a magic route....like would be available through Selene....again, I'm just saying!

It was shown she was put in one of those big metal masks like the Cuckoos were. As far as Ernst goes, I don't know. I never liked her, so I didnt' care to keep track of her.

In "Here Comes Tomorrow" we learned that the Cuckoos were still physically young even though 150 years had passed. They don't appear to age. The Phoenix/Cuckoo minis never touched on this.

Chris, any chance this will eventually be addressed in New X-Men? I wonder what the reactions of the other students would be if McCoy announced that the Cuckoos won't be growing old...ever....

When Santo was telling that story, and he believed him, I was so 'aww'. Seriously, I haven't even touched my books from last week, because every chance I get, I keep reading #37 and #38 over and over again!

Hmmmm...I wonder which characters were not going to see anymore...?:( I love all of them, but I understand that you're going to have to do a roster shake-up during/after the crossover, so I wonder which characters aren't going to be part of the main roster. I hope Nez and Pix get to be part of the main team! *crosses fingers and toes and tongue*

So any artist who doesnt like the look of an established character can just change it? That doesnt seem to be very fair. Wolf Cub has looked the way he looked since 2002, in the Chamber mini-series by BKV. He looked the same in Exiles, and later in Academy X, and NXM in the first arc. But Skottie can change it? I love Skottie's art, I do. It's BEAUTIFUL, and most of his characters are just... stunning. But his Wolf Cub is gross, and I'd much rather that Nick go back to looking the way he used to look.

Um... we dont really. The issue where we learn they were close is the one you mentioned. In X-Men #190, Anole sees that Northstar is back, and is actually able to snap Jean-Paul out of his brainwashing for a little bit, but other than that, theres nothing.

We also see Anole telling Karma he's changing advisors. Ditching her for Northstar. That happens in the New Mutants v.2 book.

I've had editors love wolf cub's change, and fans love or hate it. it's always like that. Some will work for some people and some won't. That's the price we pay for drawing characters you love. I try things that I think make the character more...well, the character. I won't say that I nail every character, but I try to apply the look that I think will sell the character. With Wolf, I just thought that he should be a little more like a wolf than a hairy boy. And truthfully, I didn't have a lot of reference on him at the start. So, thanks to those that like the changes, and sorry to those who don't. I do my best to hit the mark for everyone, but it's a pretty imposible task:)

Thanks for dropping by again. :D I'm a big fan of your art here, I think you've nailed most of the characters and add many interesting touches to them. Your Wolf Club is one which I enjoy most, he looks fantastic all wolf-like and not like a hairy boy anymore.
Love the fact that you've taken X-23 to her roots. Pixie looks so cute and Anole is so cool! Loving Blindfold's spooky look as well.

I'm really sorry if I sounded harsh, and I do love your art, I do! It's just... I guess I take what happens to Nick seriously, I like him alot. And for the record, I DO hope that you become the next permanent artist for this book. I love what you've done with just about everything and everyone (except Nick, but we've been through that) but like you said, pleasing everyone is an impossible task.

And ya know what? Chances are if I see more of your Nick, I'll grow to like him more. This arc is very shadow oriented as well, so it might help to see him in the light as well.

So in light of everything I said about Nick, please keep up the good work! :)

Loved this issue! Got bored around the mid 30s but Skottie is perfect for this book! It read very well and Skottie suits it like Bachalo suits Carey --- I wouldn't have it any other way.

How slick does Elixir look? Easily an awesome design and now I <3 the character. He looks COOL. Every other incarnation made me hate him --- the art ALONE makes me like the character. That's cool. He's very eeiry here, too. Love the way Skottie draws eyes!

I like the mini-characterization of pilot Lexington.

Oh that reminds me, slick move on focusing away from Julian. He got too much exposure last arc, I think. Everyone else deserves some light!

I also like the art, and thought it fantastic right off the bat.

Usually, I don't like my comic-books in a cartoon-like style, generally preferring more realistic artists like, say, George Perez. I outright dislike most manga art.

However, I find Skottie's art to be strangely breath-taking, despite the more stylized and "cartoonish" approach. I hope he stays on the book indefinately.

The scene with Belasco facing a demon army is just too amazing for words.

If I had to reach deep ito my nitpicking bag and drudge up one complaint, it would be that Pixie definately needs to find a new hairstylist. I'm just not a fan of the "Bride of Frankenstein" look, where the hair shoots up like a flame!

Then again, if her insect-wings are beating at an astonishing rate, it's possible that her hair is routinely blown upwards by them. Making every day a bad hair day for the poor girl.:eek:

Well I can only answer for myself. You see, I hated the first year of C&C's run. So I stopped buying it after the first arc (well, mini arc) but I continued to follow the story because I loved the characters. I had been following them since New Mutants. It was the first comic I ever bought! These were my favorite characters and I needed to see what happened to them. And once the stories started getting good (Mercury Rising, and now Quest for Magik) I picked the book up again. And I'm oh-so-very happy that I did. The story is amazing, we're seeing awesomeness from David, Elixir, Anole, Pixie and the other background kids, and Skottie's work is B-E-A-Utiful.

As much as I miss some of the kids that die, I really liked C&C's first year. It really showed how much the kids HAD to grow. I really enjoyed the difference of Santo being too paralyzed to do anything to help Tag to actually sacrificing himself to save Julian. The funerals for the bus kids was actually really good and once again Emma feeling guilty. There are so many good moments in the first year that I love, but I can see where for some the deaths opaque the good stuff.
