New X-Men #38 - Summary and Spoilers!!!!

As much as I miss some of the kids that die, I really liked C&C's first year. It really showed how much the kids HAD to grow. I really enjoyed the difference of Santo being too paralyzed to do anything to help Tag to actually sacrificing himself to save Julian. The funerals for the bus kids was actually really good and once again Emma feeling guilty. There are so many good moments in the first year that I love, but I can see where for some the deaths opaque the good stuff.
I also really enjoyed the first year. It was exciting and refreshing after the snoozefest we had before. Of course, my interest began to wane during the "Mercury Rising" story. I found it horribly uninteresting, and by that point, I'd had enough of Medina's art. Fortunately, the prospect of Magik and the frenetic aesthetic that is Skottie Young's art have pulled me back in. Even the writing seems stronger in this arc than in the last. I'm seeing some creative synergy, and I don't want it to go away.

I agree with you, their first year was throughly enjoyable. I first bought the book when Craig and Chris came onboard, being a fan of X-23, and immediatly loved the book. Decided to take a look at the previous run and found it incredibly uninteresting... But I loved what C&C were doing now. My interest also went down a bit with Mercuty Falling (Rising? or as Beast suggested, "The Rise and Fall of Mercury" :D ), even though it featured my two favourite characters...
And now with Quest for Magik everything feels so fresh and exciting again, Skottie's art is gorgeous and the writing's been fantastic. Can we keep it like this?

I agree 100%. I thought it was so stupid when he had his arms detach and help him block the entrance to the maze.

Yeah, that was kind of a dull power. But it was so funny when Wallflower messed with him and he started crying all over his lost hand... one of the few enjoyable bits of the previous run.
Still, it's so much fun to see Rockslide explode, like, for no reason. :D

Loved this issue! Got bored around the mid 30s but Skottie is perfect for this book! It read very well and Skottie suits it like Bachalo suits Carey --- I wouldn't have it any other way.

How slick does Elixir look? Easily an awesome design and now I <3 the character. He looks COOL. Every other incarnation made me hate him --- the art ALONE makes me like the character. That's cool. He's very eeiry here, too. Love the way Skottie draws eyes!

I like the mini-characterization of pilot Lexington.

The colorist did an amazing job in this issue! Suddenly I <3 Loa. How awesome is that power?!? I LOVE IT OMG. Pixie is so cute! Anole, too! He best grow that arm back, that'd be cool. WTF is up with Rockslide? No Julian around, either.

Oh that reminds me, slick move on focusing away from Julian. He got too much exposure last arc, I think. Everyone else deserves some light!

Paul O'Brien is crying again over the death on X-Axis. I do wonder about why the New X-Men are continually tackling villains from CC's past: Stryker, Nimrod and now Belasco.

Is it to show how much cooler this new batch is than the X-Men? Or is it to prove themselves, test their mettle? Is it nostalgia?

I don't know. Say what you will about Lobdell, but I liked how GenX tackled new villains (with the exceptions of Orphan Maker & Omega Red - both relatively recent nevertheless). It's been many years since Darkchylde was last around. So what gives?

We also see Anole telling Karma he's changing advisors. Ditching her for Northstar. That happens in the New Mutants v.2 book.

That's not right, the change in advisors happened off panel, after the book changed to Academy X and the squads were formed. First we learn of it is a panel of Josh and Vic playing basketball and Josh asks how Vic likes his new advisor. Vic merely says "Mr Beaubier is ok" (must be before the hero worship!) The scene where Vic talks to Karma about changing advisors is him asking to change TO her from Wolverine (haha of all people!). Julian ditched Northstar for Emma.


Anyways, my main issue with this arc is the way Ashida is drawn. She looked like an anteater in one panel!!

Thanks now I can voice my concern to the over abundant amount of gratuitous violence which is depicted on children in this very title.

Weeellll better late than never I've finally just got my #38! I stayed spoiler free *proud* xD and I did NOT see David coming! When I saw Rickys reaction to the PM he got, I assumed it was gonna be Wolf Cub who lost his heart! Wow. Exciting stuff.

The long predicted Anole regeneration looks likely to come in after this issue which is really cool, just a shame Komodo beat him to it over in the Initiative.

The book really does look the best it ever has, I loved the isue so much. When I saw the name boxes for the "JV squad" I was filled with glee.

The usage of powers from Loa and Trance was clever, Pixies Dust effect was just hilarious. Trance does looks very cute and the one shot of Bling looked very cool.

VERY intrigued as to what is going down with Santo exploding! I loved Dust and Mercury's reactions to the situation and I really like Skotties Elixir too.

Finally read #38 and I really really liked it. The art is fantastic. Skottie Young has his own unique, quirky style. Excellent!!
I started reading New X-Men with #37 (in anticipation of this year's X-over) and so far I really like what I'm seeing. Consider me hooked!!!

With Victor finally getting developed more as a character these past months I feel more comfortable in being able to say he really is my favourite character in the book. Before I loved his look and powers and the peeks we saw into his personality, but he'd never done enough to justify being my overall favourite character over the likes of Julian or Josh. Victor and Julian are my current top two with Josh and Cessily probably tied for 3rd.

My favorites of the cast are X-23, Dust, Rockslide and David.

From the other students definitely Blindfold and Loa for their weirdness/politeness and hawaiiness/awesomeness respectively.

The only character I kind of dislike is Onyxx. He doesn't do anything for me.

I just got done re-reading the issue, and seeing how I never commented on it I thought I would throw my 2 cents in now ;)

I loved it, thought it was great. I'm really into the more background kids right now, Wolf Cub, Anole, and Match in particular, glad to see them being a sort of team 2 here. As I've said before, Skottie's work is usually either something I cant get into AT ALL, or I absolutely love it. So far, it seems a perfect fit here. And I totally dig Wolf Cub's look :) The one thing I didnt like was Belasco, I wish he appeared a little more menacing and a little less like a pimp demon. Though, toward the end that did change some. The Darkchilde looked amazing.

So yeah, all in all, not much to add, just wanted to voice how much I enjoyed the issue. Cant wait for the next :D

My all time favorites are Dust and Prodigy.
From the background kids I always liked Loa, Trance, Quill and Anole the most. Then from issue 23 when Bling was first used in this book she was added to the background-favorites-list.
Since this new arc Pixie has grown on me, I think she is really cute and funny, but wouldn't call her a favorite yet... And Nezhno/Gentle is getting there too!
And the ones I don't like or care the least for are Onnyx, Indra, Ernst and that Martha girl :D

Difficult to say after only two issues and scores of different characters in #38. :confused: So far I would say Rockslide and Surge. And I really dig the design of Nezhno (sp?) and Anole. But let's see who really stands out after having read the complete arc.

I've been liking Surge less and less since...probably the second arc of New X-Men. She was my favorite alongside Sofia during New Mutants, but she's become rather generic to me.

I can't explain my love for Loa either! She just rocks for existing. I think I like Pixie and Anole more than the entire NXM team combined right now.

I've been saying it a while that New X-men is the best X-men title out there. First we have a great Nimrod story; now we have Magik back.

- The current story arc is great, but I hope Amanda Sefton has a role to play and a future once it's done. She made a good Magik II and mistress of Limbo

- I'm not sure if I'll like Magik on New X-men. The New X-men are very different than the New Mutants before them.

- It be nice for David to get his powers back. Couldn't Josh fix that?

- Love Young's artwork, but I liked Paco's X-23 better. The leather and muscular body seemed to fit the character more than other interpretations

Even if he could use bio-manipulation to transmute a human into a mutant, would he know what kind of mutant to change him into? Does even Hank McCoy know how to recreate specific DNA sequences for a specific power?

What's to stop Elixir from accidentally changing him into a mutant insect-man with six limbs, compound eyes, and a bee stinger growing out of his tailbone?

I'm assuming here that David has zero trace of his former mutant gene sequences, and that Exiler can't just bring out something "repressed", but would actually have to recreate it from scratch....

I want Amanda to play a role in this as well! We haven't seen her for a long time and she is to good to just get a minor cameo!
