Shamelessly ripped off from the DCU thread, I'd like to hear your thoughts about the current Superman comics.
What do you love?
What do you hate?
I love All Star Superman. It is quite simply the best Superman has ever been in decades. I'd almost given up hope that DC was capable of putting out truely great Superman comics anymore. Morrison & Quitely proved me wrong. I love that they reduced the ammount of monthly Superman books and are letting Johns & Donner and Busiek tell the stories they want to tell without forcing them to tell some half-assed inter-connected weekly soap opera.
I hate that Johns & Donner's Action run has been almost completely derailed by Kubert's inability to meet his deadlines. I don't know what the reasons are, but it pretty much torpedoed any momentum or excitement their story might have generated. I hate that DC can't use Superboy anymore at the exact point that DC finally wised up and decided to reintroduce him into the Legion of Super-Heroes and his Smallville years.

I hate the red briefs, and the retelling of stories that have already been retold a dozen times.
I love the character.
Love the powers and what he stands for.
Hate the trend that fellow heroes are either dumbed down or depowered around Superman, a guy who would shine brightest even if his comrades are written properly. He's more than his powers but it doesn't show.

I hate that all of Supes' challenges are of a physical nature. He's Superman, you aren't going to beat him! I think he would be better served with more moral/emotional dilemmas that force him to determine how he'll apply his godlike strength. I think that would make for better storytelling than this month's generic muscle-bound baddie trying unsuccessfully to bring down the Man of Steel.
Think like "Superman Returns", but with fight scenes this time!

i just finished kingdom come and your statements made me think of the conflict that he undertook in that novel.
i love the fact that superman gives us all a moral code, which we should all aspire towards.

I hate the delays in "Last Son".
I pretty much LOVE everything else. :D

I love the character himself, a symbol that power doesn't have to corrupt, and his world of infinite possibilities.
I hate the lack of respect DC has shown Superman in recent years, his books are a mess of inconsistent and contradictory storytelling.

I really like Superman as well, he should be given a great creative team and I think the character has never been in a better place right now post Infinite Crisis with Kurt/Geoff writing him as well as Morrison's All Star Superman being the least diluted and strongest of the books.
Not a diss on the other two as I quite like them but while it's not a monthly book, it's consistently good with every issue it's stronger on the whole.
As for my dislikes, I wish he had a stronger stable of villains that can give him a good fight either physically or mentally. So far we've had some really good ones with the return of Zod, Khyber, Subjekt-17, The Auctioneer, Lex Luthor, Bizarro, and even Metallo seems to be getting great upgrades. I also dislike his power set at times since they seem to be too overpowering for one character to have but if written right it's not that much of an issue.

Love the superman
Hate the fact that his comics seem obsessed with him punching things, which is uninteresting mostly because his villains with the exception of Luthor are all pretty lame. They need to be focusing on him mostly and his relationships and his interactions. Use him as a looking glass on soceity and what not.
Also hate that Chloe isnt in the books yet ;)

Love the character and stories, I hate the way he's drawn sometimes.
I love McGuiness' art in general, but I hate how he draws Supes shoulders and body too broad.

I prefer him drawn with the Routh-like body.

Superman is totally checking out supergirl on that cover. He's nasty like that.

I love that he stands for Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN way.
I hate the way DC treats the character and never gives him proper creative teams that allow for huge stories to be told. When they attempt to, they fuck it up somehow whether it be delays (Last Son, All-Star Superman) or the story ends up sucking (For Tomorrow). Which ties into the fact that I hate Action Comics isn't a top 10 book like Spider-Man...

That book should be number one, god dammit.
As for the American Way thing, you seem to have more to say about the subject. Care to share?

Agreed. I forgot to say that I hate when they use the character in a way so that other characters look cool. In other words, I hate with INCINERATING PASSION when Supes is portrayed like a freakin' idiot.

I dont like super smart Superman. I think he should have a slightly above average intelligence of a journalist. Too many super smart heroes.

I think he should be "smarter" than the average journalist. If intelligence is measured by pure knowledge -- as opposed to reasoning skills -- he should have collected much more information, not to mention have seen and done more things, than the average journalist. The man can speed read like no one else, and has an inquisitive mind. :D
Anyway, what I love is "elseworlds" or "what if"s about Superman.
What I hate are most of his rogues, including Lex Luthor (sorry Lex fans, I know it's nearly sacrilege).

I love when the writer gives Supes a problem that he has to think or rush to solve. Gives the reader a lesson: "Just because you have powers doesn't mean you're fit to use them."
I hate...eh, I hate when they make him out to be dumb.

I love it when they give Superman threats that actually ARE threats to him and not these lame-ass, fourth-rate jerk-offs (and yeah, I'm talking to YOU Prankster and Toyman).
I hate Lois Lane. I hate that Superman is married to this skanky 'ho. The first writer that comes along with the stones to have Lois divorced from Supes or just outright killed will be on my Xmas card list forever.
Shake up the status quo. Kill Lois. :evilsmile

I pretty much that'll happen anytime soon (if ever). Although it would certainly be most interesting to see that in mainstream comics.
