View Full Version : So what should Sam Raimi do next...

Sam Raimi finished Spider-man 3 and it's making a ton of money already and it looks like he can do almost anything he wants. Which is pretty cool even though some of you are dissappointed with Spider-man 3 (still haven't seen it and may not see until next week... sigh stupid job).
Anyways what should a talent idiosyncratic filmmaker like himself do...
Here are some options:
Spider-man 4: Sony wants to do more Spidey movies, the actors said they'd only came back if Sam came back. There's plenty of villans to choose from.
Evil Dead 4: Raimi mentioned wanting to do another Ash story and it'd be pretty cool to see him and Campbell team up one more time back to the franchise they started with.
The Shadow: Raimi purchased the rights for this recently and tried to make a Shadow movie before creating Darkman.
The Hobbit: Apparently New Line offered it to him. And it seems like he's interested.
The Wee Free Men A book in the Disc World series that Raimi purchased the rights for. Don't know a whole lot about it.
Something Else: The guy might be working on something else even cooler then these projects. And sometimes that's even better.

I haven't seen Spider-man 3 but I do get a feeling of malaise from people who worked on the movie and people who watched it. While I would love to see Raimi tackle the rest Spider-man rogues gallery like the Lizard and Electro it might be in everyone's best interest to move on or take a break from Spider-man for a few years.
Same deal with Evil Dead. Despite Bruce Campbell getting long in the tooth I feel like the two of them could make an Evil Dead at any point of their career. Heck I'd see Evil Dead with a seventy year old Ash. Bubba Ho-Tep was great.
I have no idea what Wee Free Men is. I'm sure if he made it I would go see it but right now I'll say no.
The Hobbit could potentially be interesting in Raimi's hands. The tone is much lighter then Lord of the Rings while the scope in many ways is bigger. It might be good to distance the movie from Peter Jackson LOTR movies because of this. Let it be it's own movie and new voice might keep it seperate it from the trilogy. But at the same time you might lose Weta and the actors that made LOTR movies so special. And you'd still be comparing it Jackson's vision (despite the fact The Hobbit is a different kind of story to LOTR).
The Shadow is another superhero story but much darker then Spider-man. And Raimi seems pretty passionate about the character. It's also a much smaller scale though I wouldn't mind see him do it as a period movie since that's when they character works best. Right now I'd say I'm leaning towards the Shadow and The Hobbit as a close second.

You got a point thare. Pretty soon eventually people will just get sick of the Spider-Man films so Raimi may aswell quit while he still has some dignity with the franchise left regardless of what some of the trollish naysayers say. I hate to see him go down the road of Singer.

Something else that's been brought up is what other stories in Peter's life can be told. The Spider-man movies can't be just Spider-man vs. such and such villan. There has to be a good thematic reason to make one.

Thats just logic speaking. Trust me when hollywood see's dollar signs all reason goes out the window.
I want spiderman to stop for awhile myself, Im just about sick of spiderman 3 and I havent even gone to see it yet.
Its a tough call though. Raimi leave spiderman and some half whit take it over and totally ruin it? Or raimi stay and keep cranking out cookie cutter material?
But back on topic what Id really like to see is him desolve his ghosthouse pictures and go back to making real horror films instead of that crap they have been cranking out.

I wouldn't say Sam Raimi's production company Ghosthouse is bad , it actually served as a outlet to bring in popular asian horror movie directors like Shimizu & Pang Bros to hollywood and is bringing comic & game horror to screen like Siren & 30 days of night and of course , is bringing the evil dead remake though Raimi isn't directing it but is responsible for choosing the proper director so it will be interesting.
Sam Raimi & Peter Jackson should go back to their roots and direct low budget horror flicks instead of hollywood megabuck movies. They certainly should have made more than enough money from their mainstream hollywood success.
Maybe Raimi will surprise everyone and direct Hercules & Xena : The movie , starring Lucy lawless and Kevin Sorbo. :D

Sam Raimi gets Terry Goodkind’s bestselling Sword of Truth adventure series!
Sam Raimi, best known as the director of the hugely successful SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN II films, and his producing partner Joshua Donen, have optioned film rights for Terry Goodkind’s enormously popular bestselling SWORD OF TRUTH adventure series, published by Tor Books.
Having been approached by Hollywood a number of times over the past decade, Goodkind was never convinced that his 400,000 word bestselling novels could be successfully compressed into worthwhile feature films. In a meeting at the author’s home, the renowned director and producer instead conceived of a groundbreaking mini-series. Within two hours Goodkind was sold on the concept and negotiations commenced. Ten months later the deal was finally concluded. “It’s a dream come true to work with someone of such remarkable vision, talent, and ability,” Goodkind said. “Given Sam’s sincere love for these stories and his determination to only make great films, this mini-series will be a watershed event.”
All of Goodkind’s novels have been international bestsellers. Translated into 20 foreign languages, there are over 10 million copies in print. The SWORD OF TRUTH series began with WIZARD’S FIRST RULE in 1994. The 10th novel in the series, PHANTOM, is on sale now. The 11th and final volume is under contract and will be published in 2008.
Raimi and Donen hope to begin production of the opening mini-series, WIZARD’S FIRST RULE, within the next year, to be followed by ensuing volumes of the epic novels. The development process will begin while Raimi completes SPIDER-MAN III. Definitive word on the production will be available in early 2007.
Goodkind was represented in the negotiations by Russell Galen of the Scovil Chichak Galen Agency in New York City.

I'd like to see a non-crappy Shadow movie myself.
Now that Sword of Truth project could be really cool. The books are awesome, but if would have to have a pretty big budget to do it justice. It certainly wouldn't work with a shoe-string Sci-Fi Channel budget for instance.

Crimewave 2 !
I would like to see Evil Dead 4 ( 2 is my favourite ever movie, showing everyone just what can be done with four walls, a camera and a spark of madness) , but I would be so terrified that it would suck, that Raimi is no longer the torturing immature slapstick nihlist that spawned the original movies ( Army of Darkness really dies in its third act ).
As long as we return to the format that Ash is an idiot, everyone is stupid and they all must pay by enduring demonic tortures and madness, I hate the "cool" Ash that so many people seem to write nowdays, Ash is an idiot and should be treated with no respect.
Also Ash should have a laser gun attachment like the oft rumoured treatment featured.
I would also really dig a Spider-man 4 whenever he is ready.

Either Evil Dead 4 or The Shadow. I went with Evil Dead 4.
I hope Rami is done with Spider-man. Not that I didn't like him, but I think the guy just wasn't in control of this last film and I don't think it was the film he wanted to make. Why should the guy go through that crap again? Why should fans?
I want Spidey to get a break. Then maybe Marvel can get the rights back and tell a proper Gwen Stacy and Goblin story.
Though I'm sure Sony won't like that. Hell, I was in Best Buy and saw Spider-man ads hawking Sony portable DVD players and crap. Sony wants Spidey as their hardware whore.

Well... whatever was 'forced' upon him, he went along with. He decided to 'listen to the fans' at the suggestion of the producer. I don't know how much "do it or die" power the producer actually had, but Rami rewrote it into a piece of shit that screams rewrite for the sake of shoehorning Venom in. And that's only one of the problems with it. 'Evil spidey' was still just completely laughable and that is Rami's fault. He wrote it, and directed the actor.

Assuming the various book reviews I've read were accurate, a Sword of Truth mini could be amazing as they adapt the later books where it veers from action-fantasy into a series Ayn Rand lectures with a hero who valiantly slaughters unarmed hippies. I mean, at least it doesn't sound too much like a LOTR ripoff...:)

A toss up between The Hobbit and SM4.
Seeing that TH will be a New Zealand production (I'm assuming) this may mean they can get my Kiwi lover in the film one way or another :D Peter Jackson asked Lucy Lawless to audition for the role of Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but she declined because she was pregnant at the time and would postpone production :(

Besides, after all that sh*t he was talking about Sam Raimi, Lucy Lawless and Rob Tapert in various interviews and especially the most recent one, theres no way in hell he's going to work with them again, or vice versa.

I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be. It was comic relief, and classic campy Raimi/Tapert style. I loved it, personally. Tobey McGuire pulled the scene and Peter Parker's personality perfectly. I don't know if he studied the voice actor of the 1990s animated television show Spider-Man, but the resemblance is dead on.

If Raimi asked him to come in for a role in the next spider-man movie , no doubt Sorbo would be crawling back on his knees to get that role. It's not a question of Sorbo not needing Raimi but rather the other way around , Raimi doesn't need Sorbo and Sorbo seemed to be bitter about it since the spider-man franchise are huge.
Honestly , from that interview , it does seemed like Sorbo think of himself as too big for his own shoes .Tapert wanted him to come in for a grudge audition for a small role and he rejected that ? He's not getting any younger and his star is fading fast.

He messed up big time with Spider-man 3 ? Strange though that spider-man 3 has been breaking box office records all over the world ? That's not the definition of messing up. Messing up is something like Superman returns which was a box office flop and a boring as hell movie with a stupid son of superman plot.
