And this little that beauty that people (including me- to be fair) have been talking about for many moons:

I do wish that Mignola was sticking to drawing BPRD's covers, but Davis is always welcomed. Now speculation as to who that mystery character is. The Hellboy cover is beautiful, though. Things look like they're going to be keeping up throughout 2007. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats Styg! You beat me to it.
Being that this thread isn't labled LOOK OUT! SPOILERS! i won't comment too much, but there's a whole bunch of things that the cover and blurb imply for the future of BPRD. Join me at the Garden of Souls Spoilers Ahoy! thread won't you?

That being said, I'm pahsyched for the new TPB. I've been calling for it for a while too, maybe even to the point of being demanding, but only because I was too cheap to buy any of the 'Book of's. And...what's this?!!...a new story! The wait makes sense! And now we only have to wait...until...oc...to...ber...
...crap.

The new TPB cover is hmm... Unusual? Seems that mike decided to do something less minimalistic this time. And I have to say I love it! Not only is the Troll Witch my favorite short story but this image in my humble opinion looks as if it was... A family portrait! And seems that both the witch ant big red are uncomfortable about it! :)

I have to complain about HELLBOY VOLUME 7: THE TROLL WITCH AND OTHERS having an exclusive story. I bought all the "Books of" series just for Hellboy and the wizards 1/2 issue, now I'm expected to shell out another $17 I wouldn't spend other wise for one story. Brilliant marketing some say, I call it massive disrespect for your customers. I didn't buy the Weird Tales TPB with the extra story and I won't be getting this one or any more "Books of", Dark Horse is getting to greedy.

Gotta simple (tongue-in-cheek) solution for you Donald- don't by the trade.

I have a simple reply, it ends with 'and the horse you rode in on.'

Easy..back up. I agree with both of you to an extent..i bought the Books of as well, and i agree about "double dipping", i will still do it, as i have for all the HB trades, and original stories.
That said, easy with the mean comments which i and maybe others do not take as tongue in cheek.
There's no winning with trade collections. If there are no extras there are completists who complain that they're paying money for the same thing or a new cover. If you add extras, there are complaints of... well like above.
The truth is that the trades are not merely collections of printed material for existing fans. They'll be in bookstores for years and bought mostly by people who've never seen the individual comics and collections. I like the extras myself.
The "Books of " series is excellent in a cool format. The Hellboy stories are not the only draw. And remember, the fans that DIDN'T buy those collections because they only wanted the Hellboy stories are jumping up and down saying, "Thank you, Dark Horse!!"

Yeah, the Dark Horse Book of... books are full of good stuff. The Book of the Dead, in particular, has new stories with art by Eric Powell, Kelley Jones, Jill Thompson, and Guy Davis.

Apart from the Hellboy stories, the best stories were the Strays ones, they got better as they went along.

What Tad said.
Lord knows we've heard enough complaints from people about the "Book of..." books, wanting the Hellboy stories in a trade so that they wouldn't have to buy collections they didn't want for the sake of only one story. The same solution applies here: one can always stick it to The Man by borrowing it from a friend or the library or elsewhere. There are several Hellboy stories that I don't own, but I've managed to read one way or another.
Thanks a lot for bringing these to our attention, Neil.
I must say I'm really tickled about Guy Davis doing the BPRD covers. I love Mignola's art up and down (like that Troll Witch TPB cover, nummy!), but I love what Guy Davis is doing with the BPRD and can't get enough of his take on it.

Eric Powell and Guy Davis' stories in "Book of the Dead" were outstanding.
I liked the Strays stories too.

Tad got it perfectly.
BTW, sorry I offended you, Donald. I'll just leave it at that.

I know some creators put extra stuff in the singles themselves, to co-erce people into buying them instead of trade-waiting. Not re-printing the covers seems to be somewhat common, too.
Honestly, I'm pretty pleased with how DH handles their trades... I found some real gems in the Dark Horse Book of... books, and I'm happy to have HB in the same spot, too.

This is hardly a new development. The previous two short story collections had new stories, not including the redrawn Varcolac, and sketchbook sections. The full-length books have usually had epilogues. I think Seed of Destruction is the only collection with no new material, and even that had the SDCC and CBG shorts, which can be hard to find, otherwise.
I'm disappointed there's not a new all-Mignola story, though. Maybe he's saving them for the book with Screw-On Head, Abu Gung, the Weasel story, &c.
:D I for one, am looking forward to all things Hellboy!

It's all good. I didn't directly want to offend the guy, but I felt those comments had been made many times before and have a very simple solution. If the trades offend, don't buy 'em. As Scott A. has been known to say, the best way you can demonstrate disdain for something is not support it. But what do I know? I do know that if you can't take it don't dish it out, and I can take it.

"The Guy" said in his post he wasn't buying this trade, just like I didn't buy the Weird Tales one. Not buying something without giving the reason you're not going to buy it doesn't really have any effect on the seller. I said way back, yes, complaining about the new story in the Weird Tales TPB, that I like trades and if it just collected the previously published stuff with sketches or pin ups I wouldn't have said a word. Would anybody be happy paying $17 for a single HB issue? If the comments have been made several times before, maybe then they have some merit to them?

..... When I started collecting the comics, someone mentioned to me don't bother they have trades there better. I bought the trades too, noticed a big difference in the story line from comic to trade along with the art. I still collect them all any way. for some it could be a problem, I did spend quite a bit of money, I still thought it was worth it though to get both. I asked my comic guy if there was a different story in weird tales anywhere like in the others but he said no. I will now add weird tales trades even though I have all the comics. There is aways added art which I enjoy.

For me waiting is fine if it's a story I may have missed when it was on the stand, or if I know the trade will have special goodies to sweeten the deal. As with BPRD and anything Hellboy, it's virtually a guarantee I'll purchase the TPB anyway just to have the extras and a nice all-in-one collectible to grab on the bookshelf, so I've never looked at it as a marketing ploy. However, I don't discount that for some companies it may be just that.
