so, I noticed on the Naruto Manga Returns character flow-chart that Gaara is considered dead. how does he die? does he stay a villian or does he have one of those Piccolo-style transformations where he becomes a good guy? he's probably my favorite character in the Naruto-universe at the moment. so I'm curious if he continues to be awesome, or if they drop the ball with this one.

Gaara is still alive.
However, his bijuu(Shukaku) is gone. He can still manipulate sand t some degree, but no one knows to what extent.
He's also the Kazekage, and a good guy.

aha, thank you.
hopefully he continues to be awesome. and hopefully they bring him back later... cuz, geez, if he becomes the Kazekage then it seems like the Hokage might ask him for help later.

To elaborate a bit:
The series comes out of the timeskip, Gaara has become Kazekage at some point during the three year gap.
Akatsuki (the evil baddies) attack and defeat him, their goal being to extract the One-tailed demon within him.
They do indeed extract Shuukaku -- but a demon cannot be removed, without also killing the host. And so Gaara dies.
But one of the team sent to rescue him, sacrifices her own lifeforce to restore Gaara's.
I don't think it's been explicitly stated, but Gaara should still be the Kazekage.
It also stands to reason, that he no longer possesses control of the sand -- but IIRC it hasn't been shown one way or the other.

He uses sand to make Naruto shake hands with him.
Gaara can still control the sand, we just don't know to what extent. Personally, I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that he's mostly the same, just no sand shield, and he can sleep now.

... and he can sleep now.
You know, it's gonna be freakin' WIERD to see him without those perpetual bags under his eyes.

Gaara sleeping, that's a foreign idea. At least he has a jutsu that forces himself to sleep. Betcha the sand nin will be mad now since he needs to sleep now (I suspect the bijuu kept him alive since you die if you don't sleep after a certain period of time), no longer can keep him working 24/7. Imagine the godaime working 24/7, Konoha would be much more productive!

Also, according to the databook, he maintains control over the sand, but "no longer has the sand shield that functions regardless of his will."

You know, it's gonna be freakin' WIERD to see him without those perpetual bags under his eyes.I'm hoping that those things will remain, sort of like a left-over trace of the shukaku being inside him for so long.

heh, and I just thought it was eye-liner. it's part of his "signature look", and I for one, hope that it stays... if and when he shows up again.

He still has a score to settle with a certain Akatsuki member.
